GB News: a thread so you never have to watch it

Rather surprisingly the only channel to cover the Rochdale by-election count was GB News (not on the radio either).
In the circumstances they did a good job, though by no means "balanced". Stephen Pound was on as the tame Labour person (and former MP).
After this exercise in giving Chris Williamson enough rope to hang himself I went to bed

P.S. the eccentric candidate with the pig nose wandering about behind the interviewees was very annoying.

It was on BBC1
It say Ru Paul's Drag race in the programme guide - until 1.20 am.
Unfortunately from 1.20 am it is "unavailable" on iPlayer.
So did they have any revealing guests? And did they claim to cut them off?

That's because BBC1 joined the news channel at that point, and old output from that doesn't get added to the iplayer.

It must have been on Sky too, because someone commented on the Rochdale thread that Tice lost the plot during a BBC interview in the early hours, and a few minutes later did the same on Sky.

as cupid_stunt said - there was a different psephology wonk on to normal, but otherwise the only thing of note was the interviewer explicitly telling Williamson to shut up when he used the word 'genocide'

"it's not antisemitic"

It kinda is

Interesting; do you reckon that's a blanket BBC thing that the word genocide can't be used on air? Would kind of make comment on the ICJ case difficult, then?

well, stavros keeps pointing out on the QT thread that Fiona Bruce shuts down anyone who uses the word on there. I thought it was probably just her, but maybe not

Are GBNEWTS going to cancel Neil Oliver? There are muttering on TwiXter but I couldn't see anything definite.

Hardly a surprising result from OFCOM, given how outrageous the situation was. What we need is more positive outcomes on all the other complaints they are dealing with over the output from GB News.

"[The comments] reduced her contribution to a broadcast discussion on mental health - in her professional capacity as a political journalist - to a judgment on whether she, or women like her who publicly expressed their political opinions, were sexually desirable to men," Ofcom said in its ruling.
"As such, we considered that Mr Fox's comments were degrading and demeaning both to Ms Evans and women generally and were clearly and unambiguously misogynistic."
Ofcom added that Mr Wootton's reaction and limited challenge "did not mitigate the potential for offence" and instead "exacerbated it by contributing to the narrative in which a woman's value was judged by her physical appearance".
It added that "no apology was made after the interview with Mr Fox in the remainder of the two-hour programme - nor were any other editorial techniques used to address the potential for offence".

The GB News Spin Room x-twitter account on Saturday picked up Oliver's announcement of changes to his show from next week:
As anticipated by many, Neil Oliver will be moving online with a two hour show every Friday, understood to be a compilation of pre-recorded interviews aimed at a US audience. It’s unclear whether GB News intend to produce this new show in line with Ofcom’s broadcasting guidelines, something the channel has always staunchly protested is their choice and not a necessity. The one hour cutdown will still need to adhere to Ofcom rules, since it will be broadcast on UK television. - GB News Spin Room x-twitter link)

So only a one hour edited highlights show will be broadcast on GB News at 6.00pm on Sundays.
Sunday 6pm is routinely where GBN shove anything in. Recently it’s been repeats of Camilla Tominey’s morning show and was briefly occupied by John Cleese’s worst rating show of his career ‘The Dinosaur Hour’ - (GB News Spin Room x-twitter link)

One suggestion is that this is:
Presumably a wheeze to get around Ofcom rules by putting all his wildest stuff online where they can't touch it but his fan base will still watch it? - (John Bye x-twitter link)

However another reading might be that his weekly conspiraloon sermons calling for an 'uprising' no longer fit with GB News evident intention to influence the future of the Tory party after a general election defeat. And some of his fanbase see what could clearly be read as a demotion as the first step to getting shot of him.

I note that the official GB News x-twitter account only highlighted a couple of the less inflammatory claims in Saturdays sermon.

Dan Wootton has finally been axed from his £600,000-a-year GB News role after the broadcasting regulator upheld a complaint over the misogyny row which saw him suspended from the channel five months ago.

The judgement, released on Monday, said: “On Friday 1 March 2024… solicitors on behalf of the licensee [GB News] sent Ofcom new evidence which it said it had been unable to send previously due to an internal employment process.

“The solicitors said this information supported the licensee’s position that it had asked Mr Wootton to read out an apology and he refused, but it had been unable to give Ofcom this information until this point as ‘it was considered unfair to Mr Wootton… during an employment process’.

He refused to read out an apology, that £600k mistake is going to hurt. :D

The move will be seen as boost to GB News, despite its rising financial losses. On Tuesday, GB News said its pre-tax loss had gone from £30.7m in the year to the end of May 2022, to £42.4m a year later. Last year, GB News received £41m from its parent company, taking the total it owes to £83.8m.

"the move" being Talk TV's shutting down, not GBNews sacking Wooton. but saving that £0.6M will help plug the losses.

I predict they'll do an exit from one or all of the 'mainstream' terrestrial carriers eventually and cite the same reasons as Talk TV - that audiences are shifting to online platforms - and this is where their focus will be.

I suspect that GBN's audience is still amongst the cohort that think telly is only on the actual telly tho. They dont seem very aimed at da yoof
