Galloway's Workers' Party of Britain

Yes I see what you are getting at , although again in itself nation , family , workers could equally sit in a spectrum from communist to socialist and not necessarily the preserve of the right.
The reason why I am pursuing this issue is that if labelling Galloway as a Strasserism is correct then it is to label him as a fascist . Surely a necessary conclusion of that is that not only should he be no platformed but his supporters physically confronted and his movement smashed?

can't personally conceive of any meaningful interpretation / form of socialism that has family and nation at it's core, but also wldnt be describing GG or WPB as Strasserite at this stage

Galloway is a very gifted grifter. There's no other reason why such a relatively obscure politician, a backbench ex-Labourite who has since been fronting two-oddballs-and-a-rescue-dog parties, should have remained in the public eye for so long.

I don't believe he is antisemitic but I do think he's happy to give that impression. His words are often ambiguous so that people can read into them what they wish.

The idea that Galloway is ideologically committed to anything or anyone other than himself is laughable. Surely his career in the last dozen or so years is the perfect illustration of that. Bradford, Tower Hamlets, West Brom. His 2019 campaign was tragic, attempting to re-brand as "Mr Brexit" and addressing half a dozen malcontents in the back room of a pub, some of whom were presumably looking for the weekly beetle drive, came into the wrong room, and then felt it would be rude to leave.

In the last year alone Galloway has professed support for Celtic, Wolves and now apparently is a family season ticket holder at Queen of the South. He claims to be leading the opposition to Nicola Sturgeon from a twitter account (I doubt he's even on her radar). As we all know twitter doesn't have all that much reach into the wider population and his ramblings struggle for profile on there. Beyond twitter and minor left-wing groupuscules, literally no one has heard of his party in Scotland.

He broke lockdown rules to attend a football match yet makes opposing "COVIDIOT Margaret Ferrier" a central plank of his forthcoming by-election campaign. He is apparently building a base in Dumfries & Galloway (that well-known hotbed of far-left sentiment) whilst apprently being the go-to man for a constituency seventy miles north. He's making a pitch for the Unionist vote in Scotland which has already been sewn up, largely, by the Tory party, with Labour and the Liberals in terminal decline north of the border. And as if the kind of diehard Unionist lodge go-er / Rangers Supporters Club & British Legion office-holder type, would give Galloway, with his Catholic background and historical pronouncements on Irish republicanism, the steam off their piss.

Whatever Galloway says Nicola Sturgeon is hugely popular north of the border. Galloway seems incapable of reading the room or indeed that the Scotland he's returning to after twenty years spent largely in England is profoundly different to the Scotland of the late 1980s, when he made his name.

But it doesn't matter. As everyone knows, this latest astroturfed joke of a party that has been founded, the latest hyper-activity on social media, is happening for one thing and one thing alone- to keep George Galloway's profile prominent enough that he can continue to make money from it. Nothing else matters to him.

39th Step asks about Strasserism / physical oppositionism to Galloway. What actually is the point. Galloway is a noisy irritant, like a car alarm in the distance at 3 a.m. He's the permanently drunk jobbing actor who just has to tell you again that he was once in an advert for shoe polish with Ronnie Corbett. I just wish the washed-up, carpetbagging charlatan would fuck off- and, frankly, that people would stop going on about him as though he's any kind of relevant.

This is urban, if you need reminding, where we love to discuss the irrelevant

Excellent rant. And I largely agree, in fact. I don’t think he actually believes in anything except George Galloway.

He was my MP in the 90s. His profile then, which he was more than happy to play up to, was as being on the nationalist wing of Scottish Labour. This was predevolution, of course, and as one of the prime movers of “Scotland United”, after the 92 general election, was seen as pushing Labour in a “maximalist” direction. That is, beyond the measure of devolution that was Labour’s policy at the time.

Now, of course, his pose is as the Great Unionist, scourge of nationalism.

Of course, people do change their mind. They do refine their position. But usually it’s in a direction, rather than all over the place. George has of course been a man of many positions, all of them strident.

I’d agree that the positions he strikes are for self promotion purposes, and to build coalitions who will work as his foot soldiers.

He does of course deserve to be deprived of the oxygen of publicity.

But what do you REALLY think, steeplejack..?

FWIW, completely agree.

He's not just a grifter though, his actions are all consistent with his long held Stalinist political views and practises. He then applies those principles to create anti (western) imperialist projects, preferably centred around support for 'great men' who can act as the hegemonic figurehead, the world spirit of Hegelian dialectics. His opposition to scottish nationalism and the EU, as well as his support for 'muslim causes' in the uk and abroad is entirely consistent with this.

And he is a massive egomaniac who, from day to day, will blithely flit from one absolutely central and only important cause to another, most of which will laugh at him and not give him the time of day. But he's caught that mood and been independently elected twice. It would be foolish to entirely write him off as a loon.

Being a loon doesn't necessarily stop people getting support and/or power, not that I'm saying Galloway will get anywhere in that regard.

Totally agree. If more people put him the washed up carpet bagging charlatan category rather than trying to be oh so politically clever/ sophisticated in characterising him as a strasserite without any tactics to deal with the label we’d all be better off .

Maybe historically he was more than a grifter. Not now, as his actions in the last eighteen months show. From Brexit Party wannabe, from old school Brummie Firebrand to the Lenin of Lockerbie. Fronting yet another astroturfed Tufty Club, this time with the North Korea UK Fan Club being the Ball to his Cannon.

He’s a tragic joke. His party will get a Solidarity-type vote and be forgotten.

It’s not easy being yesterday’s man and George’s recent antics show he’s finding the burden tougher than most.

I was hoping for a Polytechnic of North London anecdote tbh, where the pair of you, despite obvious personal & political differences, had defended a stage successfully against an ugly crowd of boneheads!
Nope sorry, the nearest I could come to that was about an hour before I got arrested when the fash attacked the Redskins at the GLC festival I did have a discussion with a NCP member about miners wages in the Soviet Union.
