Whilst no-one is in a position to know how the perpetrators planned to exit from their 'mission', it is obvious that they achieved their objective with ruthless, and some observers have said "professional", efficiency. I fail to see what is gained by pretending that these killers were "crap". Why would you want to maintain such a preposterous position?

They only (mostly) shot a load of unarmed middle aged cartoonists. It wasn't the 'Guns of Navarone'. They appeared confident, but let's not hype them up either. We don't want them to appear more attractive/scary than needs be.

What kind of person kills people over a cartoon? Can't imagine how much it must hurt the victims loved ones. Killed by religious maniacs over something so trivial. Very sad.

Why don't they just not look at the cartoon? What does it matter if non-believers don't respect Mohammed? If someone spat on and set fire to the bible it wouldn't arse me in the slightest. Neither do 'Jesus lol' memes.

Deputy Leader of F/N on news said "we must be careful not to condemn all muslims", bit moderate for them.
They have nothing to gain from going all in with the heavy stuff as the constituency that that would appeal to is in the bag, and any subsequent violence against random muslims would reflect poorly on them. This kind of approach in my groping uninformed kneejerk opinion is designed to eat into the left and liberal right.

Have they? Can just see they're raiding three different locations in Rheims and one in Charleville-Mezieres.

The prof, with that unerring tactical sense of his, thinks this is the right time to (re) tweet his they had it coming piece from a few years back:

Hey Muslims, look at me being the best defender of Muslims. Do you want to come to a party?

The French press were reporting earlier that they'd possibly been arrested so probably came from there.

Oops. Police claiming that the suspects were forewarned about the raids in Rheims by the press and social media and escaped. :hmm:

Has anyone done that on this thread?

The notion that journalists/cartoonists can be slaughtered on the basis that they have blasphemed against religious sensibilities is, of itself, scary enough..irrespective of the 'competence' of the murderers.

Unbelievable, crass and pathetic, how did so many(including many on here in their time in the SWP) ever take that man seriously?

This appears to be a case of French citizens killing other (extremely famous) French citizens, including the armed police there to protect them, in the centre of Paris, in the middle of the day, and escaping (thus far) and you would prefer to see the operational significance disregarded for fear the perpetrators appearing "attractive". To whom?

Is that being reported anywhere else? French press still seems to just be saying that an operation is taking place in Rheims.

ETA Le Monde now saying they've no information about any deaths or arrests.
From the Telegraph..
Latest
23.45 Increasing confusion over what is happening in Reims, with police seen leaving the apartment block. iTele, a French news station, says that police were not carrying out a full scale assault on the building, but searching the scene for DNA samples.

Although...clearly...there's lot's of bollux being posted tonight.
