"Freak like me" by "The Sugababes" is the greatest "Pop" song of the last 20 years

the charts in 2003 were dominated by dancehall/r&b stuff though - half the rest of the songs posted on the thread are too. It's not like just the occasional R&B banger broke through - they were the charts.

Well, that's one year - but in any case, that just means they were in the charts. Doesn't mean they were pop. There's tons of pop that isn't popular, and tons of popular music that isn't pop.

For the thread, pop is whatever anyone wants it to be. It's good enough for a fun thread on a forum.

On this forum, nitpicking is always part of the fun. Get with the game, dude.

And I like pop, and other types of music. If someone started a best rap songs of the last 20 years thread and I posted up a track by Kylie or Britney I don't think that would go well.

I'm not onboard with this, sorry - pop does have limits. I think 'a style that dominated the pop charts at a given moment in time, and a song in that style which was at number 1 in the charts for the whole of August' is well within them though.

But noone would do that and that isn't what happened here. Your strawperson argument smells.

Pop has limits yes but I'm not that bothered about defining them on an utterly unimportant thread about people's favourite songs.

None of the alternatives for greatests pop song of the last 20 years come near the best Sugababes songs for me. Also, Push the Button is the poppiest pop song of the last 20 years:

I kept a lid on my fondness for Sugababes, back in the day.

"Middle-aged-geezer-likes-scantily-clad-teenage-band" was always dangerous territory, but Push The Button is one of the all time greatest pop songs.

It's not about people's favourite songs, though, it's about the best pop songs of the last 20 years. And it's not like I'm trying to rule out every song that's sort of pop, just the ones that seem, to me, to really not be pop, like where the writers would be stunned to be told they were writing a pop song.

Back to music. Janelle Monae, Make Me Feel. Close enough to pop to pop to count for me, and wouldn't really fit in any other major music genre thread anyway. It's awesome.
