France vs Croatia - (FINAL) - 16:00 - 15/07/2018

A couple of stats:

It's 32 years since there was a final where both teams scored AND one of the teams scored more than one goal (1986, Argentina 3 West Germany 2).

There have been only ten goals in the last seven finals (1990-2014) and seven clean sheets, including three 1-0 score lines and a 0-0. The last two finals have featured a single goal scored fewer than ten minutes from the end of extra time.

Of those ten, three have been headers (Zidane with two in 1998 and Materazzi in 2006), two were penalties (Brehme in 1990 and Zidane in 2006), two were left footed strikes (Petit in 1998 and Goetze in 2014) and NONE were from outside the box.

In only one final since 1990 has a player doing well in the race for the Golden Boot scored - Original And Best Ronaldo with a brace in 2002.

Only once in the last seven finals has there been a scorer who had not scored up to that point in the tournament - Zidane's double in 1998.

Five of the last seven finals have been goalless at half time. Four of those seven have gone to extra time (1994, 2006, 2010, and 2014) and two have been decided on penalties (1994 and 2006).

No team in history has been involved in more than two penalty shootouts in a single tournament. Croatia have had two so far, coming through their Round of 16 and quarter final matches on spot kicks.

I am still undecided as to whether i will watch this yet, the garden is a nice place to be this weekend so might have it on the wireless.

Good stats

I refuse to believe Lovren can ever be a WC winning defender. France must win this.

I've decided to forgo a wash this morning in solidarity with our brethren across the channel.

Cheers for the Stats!

These stats, if they're in any way indicative of actual trends, lead me to predict:

France (0)-(1)-2 Croatia (0)-(1)-1

Griezmann pen. 65, Pavard 103 (right foot from just inside area). Mandzukic 75, header

I read on Twitter that Denmark are the only team to have played both finalists in a World Cup and be undefeated against them both (excluding penalty shoot outs). Not sure how many teams have faced both finalists in one year in total though. Probably not many.

Italy in 1978 (beat winners Argentina, lost to runners-up Holland).
