Filth by name. . .

A South Wales Police officer "sought to exploit" a vulnerable victim of abuse and then allegedly made her lie about their relationship.

Paul Higgins, 42, of Hengoed, Caerphilly, has denied five charges, including the improper exercise of police powers and privileges by a constable, three counts of unauthorised access to police computer systems and perverting the course of justice.

The court was told that Higgins instructed the complainant to lie that they'd met years earlier on a night out, saying that if she did not he could lose his job and that he'd contemplated suicide. She said she felt obliged to help him and feared he would take his own life. In fact Higgins met the complainant when he was an attending officer after she called the police about a domestic abuse incident.

The trial continues:

Looking at the date of that offence, I bet 'the stress of covid' is likely to feature somewhere in his defence. Domestic Violence offences ramped up during COVID and don't seem to have gone back down.

His plea hearing was today at St Albans Crown Court. He pleaded not guilty to a series of charges involving the same woman. A further hearing is scheduled for May 17th, but obviously it may well be affected by the long backlog of Crown Court cases, as it would appear that today's hearing was.

Just bad apples, etc.

Charged but not yet tried or convicted.

May I respectfully point out that too much of the wrong kind of commentary on here and elsewhere could be used by his defence to have the charges thrown out, on the grounds that a fair trial isn't possible. This is the reason that MSM sites disable comments on news stories involving active trial proceedings.

When is the armed copper community going to properly deal with its sexualised violence crisis?
An excellent question. There's clearly something about the way that some parts of the force is being led that has allowed a culture of violence against women to be perpetuated up to and including serious offences such as rape. Indeed, as I write this, the culture hasn't just persisted, it appears to have flourished which is deeply worrying.

What is Sir Mark Rowley doing to overhaul this culture, I wonder?

PC Paul Higgins' trial at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court on the remaining charge of perverting the course of justice continues.
A jury at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court has failed to reach a verdict in the case of South Wales Police officer, PC Paul Higgins, on a charge of perverting the course of justice, he having been alleged to have hatched a "cover story" after investigators learned of his sexual relationship with a "vulnerable" crime victim.

The case of PC Paul Higgins was adjourned to 16 September 2024 to enable the Crown Prosecution Service "to have a fair and considerable amount of time to not only consider whether they will proceed but also potentially make representations in respect of that."
