South Wales Police's PC Paul Higgins has been cleared of four of the charges that he faced (those relating to corruptly using police powers or misusing the police computer system) on the directions of the trial judge.A South Wales Police officer "sought to exploit" a vulnerable victim of abuse and then allegedly made her lie about their relationship.
Paul Higgins, 42, of Hengoed, Caerphilly, has denied five charges, including the improper exercise of police powers and privileges by a constable, three counts of unauthorised access to police computer systems and perverting the course of justice.
The court was told that Higgins instructed the complainant to lie that they'd met years earlier on a night out, saying that if she did not he could lose his job and that he'd contemplated suicide. She said she felt obliged to help him and feared he would take his own life. In fact Higgins met the complainant when he was an attending officer after she called the police about a domestic abuse incident.
