Red Bull threaten legal action in F1

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has accused rival boss Toto Wolff of "hugely defamatory, fictitious claims" and threatened legal action against Mercedes amid the cheat row overshadowing this weekend's Singapore Grand Prix. In a fiery, and tense press conference on Saturday, Horner insisted he is "absolutely confident" Red Bull did not overspend as Max Verstappen beat Lewis Hamilton to last year's controversial championship. Horner also suggested the accusations that Red Bull broke F1's budget cap have been planted to take the spotlight away from Verstappen, who could claim his second title in as many seasons on Sunday.

On Friday, Wolff demanded Formula One's governing FIA takes robust action if Red Bull have broken the rules. Ferrari have also complained publicly. "We were a little bit taken aback by the comments from our two rival teams," Horner said. "The submissions between the team and the FIA is confidential, and I have no idea what the outcome of our rivals' submission is so I would be intrigued to know where their source of information for these fictitious claims has come from. They are hugely defamatory, and one can only assume that it is not a coincidence that this comes at a point where Max has his first strike at a world championship. It is an under-hand tactic employed to detract from perhaps a lack of performance on track from our rivals. We will look at all the options available to us because it is absolutely unacceptable to be making the comments that were made yesterday which are totally defamatory to the team, to the brands, and to Formula One ... It is just bang out of order."

F1 introduced a budget cap of $US145 million ($A226m) last year. But Verstappen's Red Bull are facing accusations that they went beyond that figure, potentially by over five per cent. The FIA is assessing Red Bull's finances, with a verdict set to be revealed on Wednesday. Sanctions available to the sporting federation range from a reprimand to financial penalties to a deduction of drivers' championship points. The latter would have an impact on last season's result. Hamilton was denied a record eighth crown when he was beaten by Verstappen at a deeply contentious winner-takes-all finale in Abu Dhabi on December 12. Verstappen took the title by eight points. On Friday, Wolff was asked on Sky Sports about Horner's claim that he was not aware that his team had breached the salary cap. "It's funny that Christian has said that because it has been weeks and months that they've been being investigated. So maybe he doesn't speak to his CFO," Wolff replied.

Horner added: "We don't know if we are in breach of the rules, and we won't know until next week when the process has been completed. So, perhaps when these accusations are made, people in glass houses should not throw stones. This is an issue for the FIA to deal with and one for Red Bull to consider what our positions is with comments that have been made."

Singapore FP3

Charles Leclerc was fastest ahead of World Champion-elect Max Verstappen by over half a second in a shortened final free practice for the Singapore Grand Prix. FP3 was slashed to a half-hour session due to heavy rain, the clock ticking down but the pit-lane remaining closed until it had reached 30:00. When the action did begin, Pierre Gasly in the AlphaTauri was first out on the full wet tyres followed by his team-mate Yuki Tsunoda and Valtteri Bottas. The Finn, in the Alfa Romeo, told his team over the radio it was nearly time for intermediates as McLaren were the only other constructor to send out their drivers before the 20-minute mark.

Nicholas Latifi, who was recently informed he would not be driving for Williams next year, told the team his car was undrivable due to a steering wheel issue as the switch to inters kicked in. Darkness fell and Verstappen occupied his familiar place at the top of the timesheet as Haas botched a pit-stop for Mick Schumacher on his right rear wheel. Fortunately, the German had not got far up the pit lane and was wheeled back for the problem to be resolved. However, the stewards announced an unsafe released would be investigated. Leclerc took over in P1, followed by Verstappen and his Ferrari team-mate Carlos Sainz as the track continued to evolve, with some big gaps through the field as attention turned to what the weather would do for qualifying as rain was forecast to remain in the vicinity of the circuit.

Grave concerns about Red Bull owner’s health

There are grave fears about the health of Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz. Rumours have been swirling for some time that the fiercely private 78-year-old, who is the wealthiest Austrian on earth, is suffering from a grave illness. “He’s not doing well,” said Roger Benoit, the veteran F1 correspondent for the Swiss newspaper Blick. A reporter for the major Austrian newspaper Kronen Zeitung agrees that there are “great concerns” about Mateschitz’s health, who has not been seen publicly for “months”.

“Insiders report that he has not even been available to his closest employees lately,” the newspaper added. A spokesman for the energy drink company founded by Mateschitz said: “As you know, it has always been important for Mr. Mateschitz to keep his private life out of the public eye. That hasn’t changed.”

Austrian Dr Helmut Marko, who is Mateschitz’s closest contact to the world of Formula 1 where Red Bull owns two teams also declined to comment. “No comment, it’s a private matter. We don’t comment on it,” Marko told the German broadcaster ntv.
