F1 2021

What the Dutch press had to say

Algemeen Dagblad

The Algemeen Dagblad draws a comparison with a well-known game. "It was an image with eternal value. A scene the world will think back to twenty years from now when the fiercely fought championship of 2021 will be discussed. Max Verstappen with his car angled on top of rival Lewis Hamilton's black car. Like the two last sticks after a spirited game of Jenga."

De Telegraaf

De Telegraaf sees the incident as confirmation that the battle between the two drivers has fully erupted. "The title battle between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton is becoming more immersive and intense by the week. In Monza, it came to a second crash this season. This time the Dutchman was blamed. It is clear that both drivers do not give each other an inch anymore."

De Volkskrant

According to De Volkskrant, the accident in Monza is not an isolated case. "The clash was the sequel to the collision between Verstappen and Hamilton at the GP of Great Britain, two months ago. There Hamilton hit Verstappen during an overtaking attempt, after which the Dutchman crashed hard and was taken to the hospital as a precaution. Hamilton was able to continue the race and eventually won."

Het Parool

Het Parool found it painful to see that Verstappen had to walk a long way from his car to his team. "They had to walk back to the pits. According to Verstappen, Hamilton had not given him any room; on the contrary, the Briton thought the Red Bull driver had made a mistake."

NRC

The contrast with a week ago could not be greater, according to NRC. "It was a long, lonely walk for Max Verstappen, once he stepped out of his wreck. Motherless alone, a minutes-long walk along the half-empty grandstands of the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza, back to the base of his team, Red Bull. The contrast with the orange party in Zandvoort, a week earlier, could not be greater."

Although either could have backed down I still think the severity of the accident was that the kerb threw Max into the air. I'm sure with a flatter kerb there would still have been an accident, but less serious. At least Hamilton wouldn't have had the car on his head.

think max knew he was in the wrong as he not been screaming for Lewis head all over the place

which he normally does if Lewis looks at him funny

also bad sportsmanship not to check on the fella if you just parked your car on his head

He walked across the track too didn't he? Even with a safety car deployed, that's really stupid. Should have got a fine for that IMO.

He's put Verstappen off twice now.
Verstappen ended up on top of Hamilton. Almost everyone is saying this was a case of two equally competitive title rivals not backing down when either could, but if anyone was to 'blame' it's Verstappen as he should have stopped attempting the pass and tried again another time.

And again, is Hamilton involved in significantly more crashes (or, if you must, putting other drivers off) than the average driver? Otherwise "only a matter of time" could apply to most drivers.

That it truly the most disappointing aspect of this whole incident.

Although my respect for Max as a racing driver has grown, I've permanently lost some respect for his simple lack of humanity to check on whether Hamilton was ok.

:(

Others have pointed this out elsewhere, but if Hamilton was trying to reverse his car from underneath Verstappen's a) that's a decent indication that he's largely ok and b) most would probably agree it's best not to approach an F1 car in (potential) motion.

Also, I haven't seen it myself but others have suggested he did look to Hamilton as he walked away, and saw that Lewis was ok.

I'd be a little more convinced by that argument had Max not then walked directly behind the Merc.

That makes me thing that either Max didn't think Hamilton was trying to reverse it or that Max is actually an idiot...
