F1 2021

I’ve seen a suggestion on another forum that when race control instructs a car to cede position, they should get shown the blue flags. That way they have a defined time period in which to comply, which can be enforced by the standard flag system the marshalls are already set up for. Plus the following car gets notice that they will be allowed to pass.

Seems sensible - Would it work?

They might need to delay the blue flags for a lap or two for the team to convince the driver it's necessary.

Or, you know, Michael Masi could spend a few laps negotiating with the team as to:

i) whether or not the want to cede the position,
ii) when they want to hand it back, and
iii) which driver they want to give the position to.

Because Masi set the precedent in Jeddah.

Brundle has come down solidly against Max in his post race column. wonder if this will upset his best mate Coulthard?

So after the rowdy Arabia race I checked out the race director interview F1 put out, in which Michael Messy tries to reassure us all “it’s fine!”

Is it me or has he aged ten years? Huge eye bags, facial tics and disconnected gesticulating. He looks like a man feeling the pressure in a way Charlie Whiting never displayed. Hope he bounces back from this.

I don't recall there being much debate about Charlie Whiting's decisions. What Charlie said, went.

Whether or not the teams spent as much time bitching like schoolkids to Charlie about every titchy instance of 'unfairness', I don't know. But we seem to hear a load of teams complaining to Mr Masi these days.

Broadcasting the negotiations offer to Red Bull certainly gave me the impression that all the Race Director's calls are negotiable. And when that impression spreads around the teams, Masi is going to have 10 teams in permanent 'Please, Miss!' mode.

I'm still not entirely clear what the "or..." was in that chat.

I get the sense the general theory is "...or take a 5 second penalty", but did Massi actually say or even indicate that?

And was it basically because if they were still racing, Red Bull would have had the option to decide whether they observe giving the place back or, if they didn't, be hit with the time penalty?

Feels like that's basically deciding whether to follow the rules or get penalised, which obviously anyone can do to an extent, but is possibly not something any authority should be explicitly offering a choice between?

MotoGP has the "long lap" penalty, which works really well. Most tracks (not so much street circuits I suppose, but definitely the dedicated race tracks) have plenty of alternative bits of tarmac (eg sections of the "club circuit") which take an extra second or 2 to negotiate. Importantly it gets the offending rider well out of the way so there can't be any shenanigans with the defending / overtaking. At Saudi Arabia it would have been a simple case of race control announcing to all teams that Verstappen had a "long lap penalty" and that ridiculous, dangerous 200mph straight at 60mph incident doesn't happen.

Race control doesn't impose penalties, the stewards panel does.

In other words, race control can tell a team to cede the place, but the decision whether to comply lies with the team & the driver - if they don't, it's for them to argue their case with the stewards as to whether a penalty should apply or not. "You should start behind Hamilton" was race control saying "you should give the place back".

I watched some of the c4 high lights just to see what Coulthard was going to say was trying to make out like the accident with schumi in spa

tbh David that was your fault and it was Max's on sunday

I reckon this shit has gone on forever but us mere mortals have only been privy to (some of) the radio messages from this year. Team/sporting director's job is basically moaning to FIA/Masi/stewards/anyone who will listen isn't it?

they should ban teams from contacting race control till after the event

the problem this year is everyone trying to control the results as they happen

Ok, so have I understood correctly that what race control says is simply 'advisory'? I'm clearly not clear on the role of race control and stewards (who are distinct from stewards on the track?) and the differences between the two.

I've just dug this up. It looks recent.

Race Director & Stewards.

I got the impression that in the Jeddah race Masi was saying to Red Bull he had spotted a breach of a sporting regulation as race Director.

Red Bull could give back the track position gained in breach of the regs, OR he would report the breach to the stewards for their consideration and punishment.

If Red Bull reversed the position, he would no longer have a breach to report. If RB wanted to decline the "offer", they took their chances with the stewards.

The implication was that with Masi's authority the incident he reported would be seen by the stewards as a slam-dunk breach of sporting regs, and the punishment could be anything from a five-second penalty to an outright disqualification. The "no further action" outcome was never going to happen.

RB, wisely n the circumstances, chose to do a simple swap rather than risk the wrath of the stewards.

Why the angry face a_chap ? 😲

All this adulation for Kimi as some sort of hilarious character annoys me.

He acts like a prick towards people further down the pyramid. Being rude to mechanics and journalists - the very people who helped make him rich'n'famous - is twattish behaviour.

I wouldn't mind a Verstappen win Sunday. Mercedes and Hamilton have had things their own way for a long time, it's about time for a change.

Oh. ok.

(he makes me laugh tho)

Is he rude to his mechanics? I thought that by most accounts behind the scenes and away from the cameras he’s a really good laugh.

if he was racing clean i would not mind it, i don't want this won in a wall or with micheal massi making discussions for rating

beating hamiltion clean would be a better route to a maiden win

neutral view point

Max is going to be winning championships for the next decade, don't want him thinking its cool to put his opposition into walls if the mood suits him

Plus Marko and Horner are Fuckwits

so thats hamiltion winning the drivers world championship :D

aside from tin foil nonsense that is fair play from the evil bastards at sky sports :)

give us a f1 channel aside from a full sub

*shakes fist at sky

No shonky streams for this race, thank fuck.
That is great news. My stream for the last race hiccuped at the first restart. It's normally been pretty good to till then.

I'm going to miss the last bit of the race anyway. Daughters birthday party. Really hard to get out of...
