European Super League (again)

This is one of the many ways in which the system has already fucked up football. It's not so long ago that the idea of 'rotation' was almost unheard of. Man U started it, pretty much, in the 90s, when they rotated four strikers - Yorke, Cole, Sherringham, Solskaer. Now the top teams have at least two top players for every position. Meaning the rest of the teams have fewer players to choose from. Even top internationals like Raheem Stirling can struggle to get regular matches. We're all short-changed by the quality sitting on the bench rather than on the pitch.

Something like this idea would only move that situation even further.
Indeed, I keep mentioning him but it's such a criminal waste that Shaqiri hasn't played more - I loved what (little, on MotD) I saw of him at Stoke and the rare times except sub that he plays at Liverpool he's got delightful skills. Virtually an end to his career when he went to Liverpool

That's what the big clubs do though isn't it. Suck up the best players from other clubs to give their bench quality

And way more so if this goes ahead. They'll suck up even more so they can put out a team of Shaquiris in the Premier League with the first team saved for Wednesday against Real yet again.

Hard not to agree with him . He is a millionaire property developer who co-owns a club but you do get the feeling that whilst he is not against money and profit in football he is against those two things overriding everything.
Yeah, as you say he's a millionaire but it's hard not to like him. His instincts are usually spot on and his rants are great. This one was word perfect and he looked like he was on the edge of tears.

On the bigger picture it's hard coming down on the side of the PL and Uefa. They are neoliberal cunts and have taken us to where we are now. In a way, football in the pandemic feels like a vision of the future - no fans, just TV packages and advertising. But the breakaway is not just offensive, it's insulting. Only thing I'd add is that if this goes ahead it won't be the exciting spectacle they think. Even if you are regularly in the Champions League, playing Barcelona is one of those exciting things that only happens every few years. Playing these elite teams in a never ending cycle without risk of relegation will be dull and pointless.

By the by, does anybody know if this is a more serious threat than previous attempts to get a breakaway? They look to have got the money this time.

Much as I loved watching him play it's Dennis Law I blame :( £115,000 transfer fee after Jimmy Greaves was transferred for £99,999 in '61 to "relieve him of the pressure of being the first £100,000 player" although I read he'd said nobody was worth £100,000.

Legacy fans , legacy working class. As Mandelson once said of the latter but its true of the former 'they've got nowhere else to go'
It is sort of making me wonder - I suppose United fans do sort of have somewhere else to go, as in FCUM. Is there any possibility of similar things happening elsewhere? Like, could City fans who just want to watch football go off to Maine Road, for instance?

Not literally, it's a housing development now.

Just said similar to some mates. It's always galling to see the controlling bodies of football talk about protecting the sport against self-interest and corporate greed.

Fuck 'em. Our reactions to the news may look largely similar on the surface, but they're coming from very different places.

As an aside, it'll be interesting to see if any current footballers at the 6 clubs voice their concerns. At United I'm thinking Rashford and Mata. Rashford is pretty secure and already has a bit of latitude when it comes to 'political' stuff. Mata is probably at the end of his United career so he'll either keep zip to get a new contract or come out and say something if he knows he's already out.

EDit: Rashford has retweeted some guff about prince philip, so maybe not.

Just seen this on the Guardian site

George Davidson emails in an interesting thought: “National government may have limited formal powers to stop any super league. But local government may have more, stronger and long forgotten powers. Football Clubs use the name of their towns and cities with the permission of the local council. If Liverpool Council decides it no longer wants Liverpool FC to bear its name, then they could withdraw that right. The club could still exist and play in the new ESL but call itself something else (Red Mersey?) but they could no longer call itself Liverpool. That would be an utterly extraordinary move but maybe even the threat would be something.”

Which is why I'd like to hear the likes of FIFA spell out precisely why they are against it

You could have a league with only Arsenal, Juventus, Inter and Ajax

Like PES in real life. God, that would be amazing.

Oh, 'liked' before the edit :(

But aye, will certainly be interesting to see if anyone currently employed by the clubs says much. As someone else said, will be interesting to see what Klopp says.

Just how much of the "we want to be in control, and largely in possession, of the money" truth will seep through whatever romanticised, cliched tripe they come out with.

I was going to include 'faux outrage', but I doubt their rage is faux, just their stated reasons for it.
