European Super League (again)

Putting this here as the closest thing to a general "football business dickheads" thread:
Erik Alonso, who's trying to buy Derby County, has posted a video, supposedly of his house, to show off how rich he is and therefore well-suited to run a football club:

Except it appears that he's just saved the video from a post some other, completely unrelated, rich dick made on tiktok:

Bizarre shit. "Here's a video of a fancy house I found, aren't you impressed"?

If anyone is interested in a measured and balanced view of the beautiful game this is worth a listen.

I mean it sounds shit but when you've got the top four qualifying already it feels like the horse has already bolted

I'm sorry to have to report that these pricks are at it again.

A useful reminder of what cunts eufa are, that they were thinking about coefficients at the very same time they were huffing and puffing about the European Super League and 'sporting integrity'.

There's something truly special thinking the top clubs need this back door - post-failure - route into the Champions League. It's not just that competition for European places takes place between increasingly unequal clubs, after a few decades of Sky money and other deals that work for the big clubs. It's that once you get into Europe you get immense revenues that make it even more likely you'll be back the year after (also, that you'll attract the top players). But all that manages to stay within a nominally competitive framework where, y'know, you have to like win football matches. But no, let's just bolt another principle on top of that which is... 'we used to do well with all the millions you gave us. This year we didn't but, erm, give it to us anyway'. Fantastic.

It's a bit like they've tried a few of the ways capitalism has worked, but don't feel it gives them enough:

  • Meritocracy? NOOO!!
  • Okay, let's add in (massive) payments by results on top of that.
  • Yeah, but still not enough, how about a franchising approach?
  • Lots of huffing and puffing by the other 'stakeholders', so that's a no go (for now).
  • Right then, how about payment without results?
BINGO!

This version appears to be some kind of updated Champions League.

So all the issues (bigger clubs getting even more of the money) with none of the benefits (all of them fucking off).

Right, so it removes that pesky need to actually do well in your league. If you're Liverpool or Real Madrid then to drop out of the competition you would need to finish eighth in your group, then eighth in the next group and then below third in the final league, rather than get into the top 4 in the Prem or whatever.

It's just another way of making it easier to concentrate funding on the already rich clubs.

Inspiring.

Cant see any English Club being involved unless it is a pre season tournament?

With all the protests that happened last time this was tried? Are their memories really that short? This is just pure greed.
Not the same as last time though. I mean, it's all about the same thing - greed, payment by without results and the rest - but still part of the same structure. It's not a franchise thing. There will be opposition, but not as much as last time.

Fucking hell, these are neoliberals who already have vastly unequal competition. Now they want to get rid of the competition. Well, yeah, actually just neoliberals.

Yeah they've added relegation and they've specified it's a midweek competition, not taking the place of domestic leagues.

I mean, they can still fuck off. It's still closing the door behind them to stop anybody else getting in.

I would et the english clubs go, but tell them if they do they will no longer be welcome in the EPL. Problem is there are enough English clubs involved to ensure they could effectively veto any attempt to do that. So its a foregone conclusion that it will happen.

If any teams are going to enter this, then the squad sizes are going to have seriously be expanded otherwise players are going to be seriously injured more often.

The quality of players in the EPL especially is part of what makes it "the best league in the world".

If clubs only play their best players in this new league then the EPL will slowly die. Club revenue will fall as less fans go to every home game instead only going to the ones where the big names are playing.
