European Super League (again)

I'd only support it if it was for B or Development teams from these clubs only.

Premier league club play twice a week as it is if you include domestic cups. I just can't see how these participating clubs (who already moan about too many fixtures) would be able to facilitate it unless it was only for B teams. This would also allow for bigger squads, allowing more players the chance to play regular football.

I don't think they'll be very bothered about the League Cup.

A league you can’t ever be relegated from and presumably they choose if they want any other teams to join. Absolute shite. One of the joys of football is the drama, the tiny teams performing huge upsets against the big guys, the talk of who’s going to be relegated (and as a Baggies fan, right now the joyous hope that we could just pull off the greatest of escapes).. all of it. What’s the point in watching your team play the same few teams endlessly, with a lot of that drama, and by extension the magic, taken out. Lots of talk yesterday saying the PL will kick them out of the league and all domestic competitions for these teams will cease; I’m not sure I believe it because of who holds the money, but if they do, it’s shit for fans too. No more Liverpool / Everton derby? That’s shit for fans. No more kids getting to see the best players when they come for away games. Kids who would never otherwise get the chance to see these players play. That’s shit for fans. It’s a disgrace.

I'm embarrassed as an Arsenal fan. We've failed to get in the Champions League for seasons on end and we want to sign up to replacement 'competition' we are guaranteed to get in to, can't get relegated or knocked out of, to the detriment of football as a whole. All to line the owners pockets.

The alternative is that these clubs continue to compete in the EPL (with the advantage that €3.5 Billion buys). Presuming the UEFA cup and European Cup continue they will clog places up.

I mean, I suppose it's good of them to actually make it explicit that they want to remove all competition. That's what's been going on for 20 years anyway.

UEFA will give them a load of concessions and they'll all stay in the CL. :(

PSG haven't signed up to it. Lille top of the french league anyway.
Rumours are that PSG and RB Leipzig are two of the three still to join (RB Leipzig aren't subject to the German 50%+1 rule). Probably Ajax too I'm guessing, although Edwin Van Der Sar is their CEO and he's the mastermind behind UEFA's new CL format, so maybe not.

The Super League is a logical development for football and embeds the neoliberal promise that if you become rich enough, powerful enough and focus ruthlessly enough on accumulation then you can become a God. That you can eliminate the possibility of failure. Football is merely reflecting the wider culture and society where no alternative to capital is imaginable and where increasing monopolisation, widening inequality and a lack of transparency is unremarkable.

The controversy here is merely about the EPL and UEFA being moved down the pecking order at the money trough. Once a compromise between the clubs and them is reached as if by magic those opposing the ESL will become portrayed as the Luddites standing in the way of the progress of the game. Misty eyed nostalgics from a bygone era etc
