European Super League (again)

"We clearly misjudged" FUCKING TALK TO PEOPLE, YOU SNIVELLING PRICKS!

Sorry, I know I've already made this point and it's basically useless, it just really is... I get very irritated

We didn't know this would be unpopular.

Didn't you think to maybe ask around a bit first?

The answer to that question is clearly 'no'. Which is staggering.

Yep all done in secrecy, fuck fans but presumably they were hoping it would drive their share prices up, as it initially did.

Some articles from the English edition of El País. The general attitude seems to be very similar to that in the U.K.

Same here with Chelsea, embarrassing and shameful to get sucked in.
Yep, Man United fan here and I'd genuinely like them to be booted out of the Champions League next year or docked points in the Prem. Don't think either will happen TBH, not least because it will give the dirty dozen some impetus to try the exercise again.

Rather than wait for scummers such as uefa and the prem league, it would be nice to see some fan sanctions. Really difficult to hit distant billionaires, but a statement that the owners will never set foot in the ground again would be a start.

The best response imo would be to revise the newly announced revision of the Champions League.

'Try this shit again and we'll go back to the old European Cup.'

Won't happen either. :(

Barcelona have basically said "suck it up". More than a club or whatever that bollocks is.

Aye and apply it retrospectively, excluding previous winners who didn't go into the CL as winners of their own league. Treble becomes double, Fergie kills joel glazer.

If there absolutely and positively has to be a new and fresh tournament on offer, why not have a competition that sees the champions of 32 European leagues put into a hat - no seeding, just an open draw. 16 ties, one leg. Any given game might be Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich, it might be Slavia Prague vs Shaktar Donetsk, that's the luck of the draw.

The winners play 8 knockout games, one leg - no seeding, just an open draw.

The winners play the quarter finals.

The winners play the semi finals.

Then a final to decide who wins what I would call the "European Cup".

At most it's an extra 5 games for any given club, and it would show up what an absolute crock of shit the Champions (!) League really is when there's a tournament based almost solely around sporting merit and not chasing after every penny of money on offer.

There are 55 UEFA members (although i don’t think Liechtenstein have their own league) so they should all get a crack - home and away. I’d pay to see Lincoln Red Imps v Bayern.

I'd be quite happy to have some form of pre-qualifying tournament for teams from the lowest ranked leagues. If there are 54 teams for example, it could be 22 qualify by right (plus last years winner and the winner of the 2nd tier "UEFA CUP"), leaving 8 spaces. The remaining 32 play their own knockout tournament first, with the 8 quarter finalists going into the main draw.

You could reinvigorate the domestic cups as well by offering a tournament just for the winners of those. Keep it simple and call it the Cup Winners' Cup or something.

There is a new film on the iPlayer about when Derry played Benfica in the proper European Cup in the 80s. And I remember rushing home from school to watch Cork v Bayern in what looks like the local park.

The extraordinary Derry City FC story from bombs to Benfica told in TV documentary - Belfast Live

Might be onto something there. In fact, instead of the UEFA Cup winners getting a European Cup spot, give it to the Cup Winner's Cup instead.

Random thought: wonder if there'll be a significant demo at Leeds v Man U on Sunday? An old rivalry for one thing along with Bielsa's and Bamford's comments the other day. At one level I don't want to see people banging on the coach window when Rashford et al arrive in town. But then where do you focus your protest against the global scumbags making their money off the club.
I saw there was this:

Although that's in Old Trafford on Saturday rather than in Leeds on Sunday, so dunno beyond that.

Pity about covid and all that, there could have been some massive demos at Anfield and OT over this, Spurs and Arsenal too. There's have been decent turnouts for demos at citeh and Chelsea as well, but a bit less focused on their owners. Just hope it builds into something. In 2005 at United, the glazers just ignored the protests, because the protests had just about no impact on the glazers project. Finding a way to keep uefa, sky and the prem league in the sights of the protests will be one thing this time, but also finding a way to do it that hits the bottom line of the owners will be the other. This is probably the most hopeful moment in the last 30 years of commercialisation, but I just have a feeling that the train left the station so long ago, it ain't coming back. :(

There’s pressure being out on UEFA to do just that evidently. The changes were only to appease the big 12, it wouldn’t be right to change things in their favour after their antics this week. Bear in mind they all resigned from the ECA this week so they don’t have any representation on the body that was pushing for changes anymore.
