Emily Thornberry to sue Caroline Flint for 'making up s*** about me'

Doubt very much whether that was pure invention on Flint's part as Thornberry has suggested. As has been said upthread the very idea that they might go to law over this is so ludicrous especially in current circumstances as to be beyond parody.People everywhere will be thinking oh ffs grow up!

I'm not, I look forward to the humiliating court case

I (vaguely) remember some (I think) All Party Armed Forces Group thing - MP's spending time with various units to see what's happening type thing - where ET spent most of her time with an Infantry Brigade telling everyone that she was the equivalent of a full Colonel.

Cue lots of deeply unimpressed Colonels, and perhaps even moreso, Lieutenant Colonels.

Obviously I wasn't in the room when this alleged exchange took place, and so can't know the truth of what was said between ET and CF, but given ET's track record, I know where my suspicions lie....

Hold on, why did she kill her cats? Always was a bit libdemmy
from wikipedia:
When Thornberry was seven, her parents divorced and she had to leave their home with her mother and two brothers. After this, she relied on free school meals and food parcels, and their cats were euthanised to save money.

That said, it's a joy that animal cruelty has been added to noncery as a Lib Dem activity

Nothing took place between et and cf.

Cf is relaying something she claims an as yet unknown third party told her.

Oh poor emily, someone may have told an exaggerated or untrue funny story about her - of course the only recourse is to the courts! Emily must not be mocked. That's really strong leadership that. Real strong character. Couldn't possibly laugh it off or ignore it. It must be the courts!
It's the White Van woman way, dontcha know?

I think we have established that everyone without exception is a cunt and need a new tune. Flint’s attack is just nasty fodder for the press if she can’t back it up. Not just Thornberry is damaged by it.

Why would you need to kill cats to save money? Just take them to a shelter surely?

Absolute bollocks. Her background is of direct relevance when it comes to posting pictures of white vans and St. George flags, her laughing at suggestions that ‘there is something wrong’ with 17m people and her alleged comments to Flint.

The suggestion that to mention her class and privilege in these contexts is ‘right wing’ is abysmal
Yep, her background is the context which explains not only how she can hold these attitudes, but how she can apparently not realise that expressing them in this way undermines her position as a prominent Labour MP.

It's not simply that she comes from the privileged background suggested by her father being the assistant secretary general of the United Nations, it's that she has continued and is still in that position of isolated privilege symbolised by her husband being a knighted high court judge.

And the fact that her immediate reaction to this story, which while it may or may not be true is utterly believable given both her past actions and her background, is to threaten to sue Flint is another indication of both her privilege and her misjudgement - the two things are inextricably linked.

It's easy to talk about her class and privilege without using right wing attack lines though tbf.

IIRC, her dad's background is quite posh but she was raised by her mum and lived in a council house for a time in her childhood - definitely middle class but not up there with De Pfeffel and co

Really? Fair enough to draw cultural and classist assumptions about the lot of them then. Eh? Eh?

She didn’t actually write a word though. Everything that goes with that tweet is assumed. Yes, grossly stupid to post a picture of a civilian’s house, but it’s not impossible to read it as ‘it’s an election here and there is a lot of nationalism. What to do?’. Equally you can read it as ‘these poor people are effing revolting’, but it’s best not to do people for thought crimes. The Labour response was a ridiculous and unhelpful mea culpa, rather than a good scrap over ideas engaging people. The press just filled its boots.

Is this touching story corroborated anywhere other than wikipedia?

I suspect a more plausible explanation might be something like the cats got old and sick and needed expensive medication to keep them alive, so chose to put them down - a decision plenty of people have made. Can easily be spun into sounding like what she said.

Theres a link in that bit of the story to an interview with decca aitkenhead in the graun, I expect its corroborated there, though I've not checked.
Fair enough, it* just struck me as a bit bizarre and something which could have been stuck in there as a gag.

Not really that important

*the cat bit

Only just found out about this cat-killing by Thornberry

I forgot about ET when I was advocating 'anyone but Starmer or Phillips' in the 'Who will be the next Labour leader?' thread, but the above information is worthy of :(-face x 10,000 :(

Obviously most of Thornberry's politics are no good as well .... :hmm:
