Donald Trump, the road that might not lead to the White House!

Well, yes and no, Pilch.

Do you think that during a general election run-up, a British party leader would survive a tape recording of him telling people that he grabbed women's pussies, being made public?

I honestly don't.
Not post-Savile, because that is a major hot button issue. But let's not forget the decades of systematic sexual abuse at the top echelons. People knew about it and it didn't stop the perpetrators being in the elite in all facets of society.

I think a half way competent republican candidate would be a major threat to Clinton - shes not well liked, shes been around a long time and has accumulated a lot of baggage. Shes the perfect opponent for someone like trump.

I'm not sure. I think Trump is more of a threat against Clinton, because it's been made about establishment vs. outsider, and however low he goes he still wins on that front. A more civil, at least partially policy-based, battle would play to her strengths even if the opponent was more articulate and informed than Trump because that opponent would be engaging far more with the substance of her record, therefore treating it as actual experience rather than dismissing it all as baggage as Trump can get away with doing.

There's a difference between it being hidden, and the whole fucking world hearing you admit to doing it.

The point is that it wasn't hidden. It just wasn't publicised. And yes, there is a difference in that, but it's not one I'm particularly inclined to crow about.

He wasn't caught on tape admitting it. irrc it came from one unsubstantiated source, and much we all want it to be true, it may not be.
The pigfukcer never actually came right and denied it. And he never denied that there was a photo of the scene knocking around.

But Spymaster's right, it was small beer indeed compared to what El Cunto Maximo has been up to.

It was hidden from the public. Very well hidden for a long time. The point is that a British politician would not have then, and would not now, survive admissions of extremely serious sexual assaults against women, much less be seriously considered as a potential PM.

That's not crowing. Thank fuck.

Heard most of it. Agreed with others, Trump actually came out of that no worse than he went in. Clinton campaign hoping the damage done re swing voters (are there still any?) by that tape, so they don't have to. Because they can't. The filth done on Bill's behalf etc.

Odeous, bullshitting misogynistic arsehole, etc, of course... But that sniffing thing. Stop fucking doing that.

You mean Mondale, right? IIRC some in the Hilary camp were predicting a clean sweep equal to Nixon in '72. But that was back in the summer, when it still looked vaguely like a normal campaign.

Shit I forgot about Mc|Govern.

the Goldwater 1964 campaign ( "In your guts you know he's nuts" ) is the analogy of choice amongst the bien-pensant cognoscenti I believe..... funnily enough an election in which Hilary Clinton was a Young Republican supporting Goldwater against LBJ....

There's still women I know that when you refer to groping from the 70s will say "oh well it was a different time and my teacher/priest/accountant used to grab me regularly but you just expected it"

I'd love to think you are right but there are a lot of attitudes out there that still shock me.

Even if you are right, though, it still gives me scant comfort to know that even all the rulers were aware of assaults or even took part in them, the ruled would now not stand for it. Whoopsy do.

The only thing I feel reasonably smug / thankful for is that it's really hard to imagine a full blown creationist being taken seriously over here.

Yeah I think this could actually make him more popular among some people tbh

I'm certain it will. Near as I can tell the people who support him are bullies themselves. Schoolyard bullies like to run in packs and usually the worst of the bunch is the leader. He's shown himself to be an even bigger bully than was previously thought so that makes him a "great leader." This election only follows the same pattern.

The thing that I think the news media misses about Trump's pussy grabbing is that it paints him as hating women and feeling entitled to do whatever he wants because he has money. I don't see why men should feel especially exempted. Anyone who figures they can do whatever he wants to women who are poorer than himself, will certainly figure he can do whatever he wants to men too.

There was at least a pretence towards covering it up, though...

I've not seen either of the debates but if someone goes up on stage and spends their whole time sniffing there is usually a simple explanation.

Yeah it's annoying as fuck. You can't sweat on camera, you can't sniff on mic.

Thems the rules.

This didn't happen in the 70s.

Trump was grabbing pussies 10 years ago.
