Donald Trump the road that might not lead to the White House - Redux 2024 thread.

The short is the main gist of Carlson’s bit. It’s disturbingly fetishist in nature. Not kink shaming, but grandstanding the “you’re a naughty girl and you’re gonna get spanked” as a way to aggrandise Trump is just all kinds of wrong.

I'm not seeing fetish or kink so much as grotesque misygony on the part of the disgusting Tucker and co.

'Get to your room right now and think about what you did!' And when Dad gets home, you know what he says? “You’ve been a bad girl. You’ve been a bad little girl and you’re getting a vigorous spanking right now. And no, it’s not going to hurt me more than it hurts you. No, it’s not. I’m not going to lie. This is going to hurt you a lot more than it hurts me. And you earned this. You’re getting a vigorous spanking because you’ve been a bad girl.'

His message is 'bad girl' Harris needs to be disciplined, needs to be humiliated, needs to be hurt, and will deserve all the abuse and violence that he and the sick fucks who call trump Daddy Don hope is coming her way.

Well yes. To be complete and accurate I would have added in some comments about that too.

But tbh the violent misogyny is blatant and brazen and pretty much baked in nailed down predictable.

The kink part being centre stage was a bit of a surprise to me.

“If you allow your hormone-addled 15-year-old daughter to slam the door and give you the finger, you’re going to get more of it,” Carlson said. “There has to be a point at which Dad comes home.”

I wonder if his three daughters will be any stories about "vigorous spankings" from that piece of shit

That he personally is likely getting a sick kick out of the visual of Harris getting a humiliating and painful spanking, no doubt. And ideally, for him, a public one.

But that he felt this 'visual' would resonate with the audience - which it did - takes it into the seriously disturbing and hateful territory that abuse of and violence against women and children will be seen as ok to those he's talking to, if 'Daddy' (aka white American males like him) decides so.

Agreed.
But if you’re surprised by this you’re not paying attention. Or you’re not making the connections.

This is the same constituency that believes that a convicted rapist saying “Grab em by the pussy, if you’re a star you can do anything you want” is just harmless locker room talk. Their daddy and their brother talk like that. They’ve heard it all their lives. Hell, their husband talks like that, but only in the locker room. If anything, it’s funny that anyone would find it problematic. It proves that he’s a real man.

Think about it: how little respect do fathers and brothers have for their sisters if they use locker room talk in front of them, but wouldn’t in front of anyone they want to date or marry. And then they build a “not my little girl” boundary around their daughters (those stupid T.shirts about killing the boyfriend when the daughter starts dating) and pretend those children have not been exposed to explicit language, and certainly aren’t permitted to use such language themselves. The double standards and weird backflips they adopt and operate are absolutely reflexive and unconscious. On all sides, men and women. Women in that crowd were also cheering very loudly. And I’m sure you’ve seen the strange Trump groupies.

My surprise is not that Carlson is saying it’s laudable to beat someone who transgresses the house rules (the implication is that “this house” is America); after all, it follows the “enemy within” stuff Trump was saying a week ago. Not surprised that he’s focusing on the idea of girls and women being naughty/ bad (and the implied connection there to sexual freedom, abortion rights, contraception).

My surprise is that he’s sticking the elbow into the rib of the red blooded alpha males and bringing them in with the “eh? eh? Know what I mean? eh?” stuff. Openly publicly appealing to the mythic sexuality of the mythic alpha male and identifying Trump as the Big Daddy of them all.

You don’t have to go far to find actual tutorials online about how to pull a woman’s hair correctly during sex, how to slap her so it sounds good but doesn’t leave a mark etc. And these ones are also finance bros.

Pulling the threads together and making a braid. Identifying the different groups that support Trump and making them into one. Finding common ground and identifying it for them.

Now I’m writing this, my surprise is lessening. It’s actually a short step from “you can do anything when you’re a star” to “Daddy Trump”.

Remember Big Daddy in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof?

It’s all all all in there, like a word through a stick of rock.

Trump has a long history of sexually fantasying about children, including his own. He is depraved to the core

I can't and won't try to add to that. All I would say is it's also an attempt at removing her candidate status. From people who don't think women should be in race for public office, particularly women of colour, it's a kind of declassification. It puts back in place all the barriers women had to overcome to get on the ballot paper. And I say that without having anything invested in Harris.

I honestly think (and fear) that this election is no longer about politics. I mean obviously it is, because it’s an election, and because the personal is political; but it feels like something existential is being played out here.

I agree with you that large structural elements are being pushed and shoved around. When these earthworks are done the landscape it’s going to look different. Not just the political landscape but the social landscape too.

There’s also shit like this. Video below.

(Please remember I’m not condoning this, I’m trying to view and understand it from their perspective.)

Calm measured thoughtful informed presentation of the facts. Carlson deliberately presents himself as someone who can be trusted.

He does the bonkers rallying cry at the public event (this is normal for people who are raised on Friday Night football, whose sons and daughters are conditioned to cheer at everything, celebrate loud and long when anything remotely WIN occurs) and even that makes him normal, American to the core.

And then he sits in the den and does man-talk with head-of-the-family vibes for his YouTube channel. When people on the right are asked where they get their information from, it’s not always from the weirdo far right rabbit holes, it’s from the book lined den.

Trump supporters who themselves look down on crazy Maga are watching this and nodding along, adopting what they hear and building their ideas on it.

They are demolishing Harris’ credentials, and they’re doing a good job of it.

This video queries Harris’ Americanness. It’s full of racist dog whistles, and also brazen blatant open suspicion about her credentials as an authentic American. They portray her as fork tongued, using different information and different facts to dupe and deceive. Carlson outright says that she’s not truly American because she attended high school during her “formative years”. They talk about how her reference to and experience of Hinduism throws her religious credentials into question. They talk of the Hindu goddess Parvati - who Harris has mentioned - as a vengeful and destructive “demon”. And so on.

And they’re not just making shit up. Their chat is based on books and articles, it can be traced back to source material.

I know for a stone cold fact that a great many good kind considered middle class voters will hear this stuff and feel and believe Harris to be genuinely dangerous, threatening, and completely at odds with the America they feel is under attack. Their America, the nation they love with a root deep sense of home and homestead.

Yeah, the routes back to 'politics as normal' are not obvious in all of this. Not that the previous status quo was anything good, to state the obvious, but this is potentially something without guard rails. :(

And, ironically, a significant number of those same voters will have a heritage or influences in their life that are far from 'all American'. That thing the right do when they cast their big tent, this week you are in, next week you are the enemy within.

The enemy within narrative is terrifyingly clever, though. The atmosphere in the US is a paranoid tinderbox, as it is. Just keep tossing those kind of matches and sooner or later..!

Trump abandons his idiot fans out in the cold in Michigan to talk to the braindead Joe ‘yeah bro like aliens and shit’ Rogan and his fuckwited audience:

MAGA fans streamed out of Donald Trump's rally after in Michigan after (sic) the candidate was hours later after cutting cut (sic, what fucking prick was in charge of editing this shit?) a three-hour podcast interview with Joe Rogan in Texas.

That may have been a smart way for Trump to reach millions of listeners to Rogan's popular podcast, but it left a few thousand fans watching videos in a chilly open air hangar as organizers stalled for time.

Although my initial reaction to the Trump campaign's legal action against Labour was mirth at the sheer hypocrisy from Trump, and the naive arrogance from Labour, I now have my head in my hands. The truth of it never matters in stories like this, so it doesn't matter if it was simple cackhandedness this side of the pond that falls far short of illegality - it's how it can be spun by Trump's campaign: Look! The Brits are interfering in our election! Trump's supporters are never going to look beyond that headline.
British Labour Party members have always volunteered in elections for other parties in their elections, I had a Corbyn Labour type stay in my spare room during our (New Zealand) election last time and my ex was off to campaign for Obama in 08 before I convinced to come to South America with me instead. US Democrats do the same (NZ and Aus have been awash with them in recent elections) and so do rightwing parties for that matter. It's one of the reasons why the CDI and SI exist for instance.

Of course they do. Same as other parties do - and look at Farage and Truss. But facts don't matter with Trump's base. Just the repeated slogan.

Of course I'm more replying to people here who are surprised, of course people will use it to their own ends and the Labour person who posted it on LinkedIn is a fuckwit. Still it's not actually counter productive necessarily in my experience people love foreigners talking about politics at election time.

Agreed.

I see the connections, I am paying attention, I'm not surprised by it, I'm just continuing to register my disgust at it and refusing to just shrug and accept it as 'just the way things are'.

Because it's all I can do.

I feel so sorry for the Americans that have to wake up to this every morning and the monumental effort it must be taking them to maintain sanity and keep hope alive.

This is the culture war for all the marbles. Whoever wins this will control the culture for the next few years. If it's the rightwing, it's going to mean some pretty awful things for LGBTQ folks, non-religious minorities, and black and brown peoples. I'd like to say they want to take things back to an imaginary 1950s, but they really want to take it back to pre-14th and 19th Amendment days.

Can the President amend the Constitution?

Certainly the 1930's, at least....
