Do you dry your washing machine drawer every time you use it?

If you have a washing machine do you...

  • Take the drawer out of the machine and dry it upside down on the draining board each wash?

  • Open the drawer but leave it where it lives to circulate the air, to prevent damp crevices?

  • Ignore the open/closed status of the drawer until it gets a bit mouldy then clean it?

  • Ignore the open/closed status of the drawer until it's proper rank then clean it?

  • Never think about drying/cleaning the drawer, what the flip are you on about?

  • Never get chance, your washing machine is always running?

  • Have a broken washing machine?

  • Grow spuds in your turn-ups?

  • Arse.

It's completely nuts to worry about dirt in the drawer anyway - why would it be a problem? Because it's going to go into a big machine along with a load of dirty clothes? A machine whose sole task is to take a load of dirty stuff, and remove the dirt from it? So ... do you clean and dry your clothes too, before you put them in the washing machine? So as not to get dirt in your washing machine?

It's like washing your hands before doing the washing up.
Who are your questions to?

Our washing machine sometimes smells funny because the hose behind it holds water at the bottom that sits stagnating till the next wash.

Because it can get really smelly. And slimy. I don’t like smelly slime in my home. I’d clear or work to avoid smelly slime in any other part of my home so why would the drawer of the washing machine be given special dispensation?

If your drawer doesn’t get slimy and smelly, just gunky, then leave it, save the time and annoyance of cleaning it. But don’t go all judgmental on those of us who got a £40 washing machine with a dodgy door off of eBay and have to live with the consequences of not being able to buy a big bright modern machine that works properly

I use some plant based stuff for the washing and every few weeks, I fling half a tub of bicarbonate of soda in the tub and run an empty wash cycle. This seemed to stop the whiffy machine syndrome which was a result of washing filthy work clothes in detergent. Clothes always look OK (not that I am that bothered ,since they have clearly been in some sort of hot, soapyish water so fine by me)

Is no one else using detergent paper in their machines, now?

It takes up almost no space (it’s stored in an envelope), it dissolves cleanly, you can tear the sheet to use as little as you want, and it’s apparently the ultimate in eco-friendly.

Would consider it once (haha, more like if, ever) we are at a point where we aren't struggling to meet every financial demand. Far more expensive than other forms of laundry detergent.
