My politics are a mix of libertarian socialism/anarchism. But I don't really want a revolution, or at least, I don't want a bloody revolution. Alexander Herzen said that revolution created 'a pregnant widow'. And when the widow finally gives birth, you realise that the real father was not the revolution at all. Really, I just want everyone to spontaneously realise how much better it would be with libertarian socialism/anarchism. In other words, I can't see what I want politically ever coming to pass. One day, I may make a small contribution towards that aim, but I haven't so far. :(

Probably a libertarian socialist... Though I have a heavy focus on the environment and animal liberation.

My politics are DEMOCRATIC SOCIALIST. I believe that extending democracy is the best way to ensure real sustained change.

My politics are often slagged off as New Labour apologist, Right wing etc......by people who do not seem to have done much political thinking.

A lot of people consider themselves quite wrongly in my view to be to the left of the labour party but do practically nothing. I think the LP has always been firmly to the left of groups like the swp etc etc and self proclaimed anarchists because politics is based on what you do not what you say should be done.....Politics is not an academic thing, its real and it effects everyones life.

how is the invasion of iraq and the vigorous enforcement of the poll tax, to take but two examples, is to the left of the swp or anarchists?

Politics is also about what you WOULD DO if you were in power. What LP have done in power is clearly more right wing than what many left wing groups would do.

All a bit academic though isnt it.
Real politics is about what happens in practice not in theory. Academic left groups fulfill a function but its seldom really political. Notable exceptions like the poll tax happen but not that often.

what, things like doubling the tax for low earners, like creating thousands of new offences, like lying like fuck and then pretending it's all alright, like freezing council tax for year after year for political gain while council services see their budgets frozen with months of the financial year to go?

if you think the labour party's left wing, i hate to consider what you think right wing. the labour party is a vile organisation, concerned purely with its own good and fucking over the country in a bid to retain political power.

New Labour doubled spending on health and education. They bought in a minimum wage, a minimum income guarantee, working tax credits. Improved benefits for disabled people and pensioners.....So i would say sort of soft leftish.
Whereas you spend 15 hours a day on the internet trying to prove yourself really clever and argue that the rich should be able to keep all their money even after theyve died.....So you i would say sort of soft in the headish.

wasn't sure whether to tick 'other' cos i don't trust any one particular movement but most would see me as left wing.

you have just crammed 12 years of all of New Labours good points into 1 sentence!

This Disraeli quotes sums up my views well:-

"I am a conservative to preserve all that is good in our constitution and a radical to remove all that is bad. I seek to preserve property and to respect order, and I equally decry the appeal to the passions of the many and the prejudices of the few."

That is a good quote. I read that recently in a Theodore Dalrymple book IIRC
