Crafty Thread - what are you working on at the moment?

what's the fabric? a wax resist? the thing i love(d) the most about bookbinding is the chance to work really closely with beautifully made materials - some gorgeous silks and shibori (japanese tie-dye) ...

on which note, i found a piece of japanese paper just the right size and colours for my slope in my stash. if the kids make it to school tomorrow i'm planning to celebrate by doing its finishing touches

As usual i have decided to do a project totally out of my comfort zone with a stupidly small deadline considering i have a 11 month old and limited time to do it.

Gonna make Iris a tent for her room/garden. Having looked at all the "tepee style" tents online they are all very beige and insta worthy, so i have gone the opposite way and have gone bold and bright, possibly inspired by Jack Nicholson in Batman. Fuck knows if i will manage it or not. 20190509_114218.jpg

I've had a delivery  I've also pillaged my wardrobe for 2 pairs of trousers that are too big for me that I can cut up and use.for contrasting pieces (ankle cuffs, straps, pockets, panels) of the dresses and dungarees I am going to make for my nieces and nephews.

Updates here as they happen. Need to wash all the he new material first.

Would you not just pop into Brixton or Peckham and choose off the shelf?

African wax prints seem to go strangely limp when washed, and then crisp right up again when dry. I've never understood what quality of the fabric makes it do that.

I've been working on this tanto while I was in the naughty corner.

The blade, with the habaki fitted and the mekugi hole drilled.

The saya (sheath) and fitting the kurigata.
I followed the Japanese sword maker's tradition of making the glue for the wood from a rice paste. It works very well.

And a lick of paint

The next few hours were spent on the tsuka (handle). Fitting the kashira and fuchi, wrapping the ito over the samekawa and menuki , and making sure the mekugi still lined up once it was all together.

I don't think it turned out tea bag.

I'll have to take him off ignore next time I want to achieve something :D

Beautiful, but as with all beautiful Damascus blades, I'd be worried about actually using it!

I've hacked an innocent tree to bits with it. I'm sure humans would be no match :D

I had a Keris that my Grandad got when serving in India, made from steel hawser box-welded then beaten the hell out of (poor man's Damascus!), bought from a Lascar. Better than any machete. It held an edge like fuck, glided through undergrowth and shrubs, and could be used as an impromptu axe. My waster spunk-gibbon of an elder brother sold it to one of his mates for £10. I beat the fuck out of him for that (and as revenge for all the times he took his shit out on me when we were growing up).
