Crafty Thread - what are you working on at the moment?

It's a 64 layer 15N20/1095 forged Damascus spine with a VG10 core and a black/blue layered micarta handle.

Would you sell that?

Would you sell that?

Once I get round to building a proper belt grinder, I'll be making a few more, possibly with a view to selling some, but I don't think I could sell that one. I have far too much time invested in it, and I like it a lot.
A few people have asked for the same knife, so I'll probably make a small batch of them once I get tooled up properly.

Saul Goodman how did you learn? And how much equipment do you need?
I've been into metalwork and fabrication my whole life, and last year I was watching a TV series called Forged in Fire. It's a competition for knife makers, and I thought 'I could do that', so I built a small gas forge and a belt sander, and got to hammering and grinding.
Equipment wise... You need a forge. I built one from an old propane gas bottle but I need something bigger now. You need a good belt sander too. I made one but it's too small and underpowered now for what I want, so I'll be making a much bigger one when I get some time spare. If I'm going to stick at it I need a power hammer for forging the steel, because I'm far too old and lazy to be swinging a hammer all day. I do know where there's an absolute monster of a power hammer, which I'm trying to get the owner to part with. He sold us the engine that used to drive it, and he's seen the restoration job we did on it, so he's looking for silly money for the hammer now.
This is the engine that drove the hammer. The flywheel is about 8 foot diameter, so you can guess how big the attached hammer was.

Unfortunately I might have to wait 'til the old man dies and buy the hammer from his son. :D

Fair play. Give me a shout if you change your mind.

:D that's fucking massive. Yeah I did look into it a bit... I've not done much metal work, but think I'll start once I've got my income a bit more under control. I can kind of justify it as it feeds into furniture making (not knives obviously, but finally getting round to brushing up my welding, cutting etc). Self-employed cabinet maker, so it helps to be versatile with the stuff I can do (also I am a craft technique magpie).

Is this a new hobby Saul Goodman or what you do?

All your pieces are beautiful.
Cheers.
I've been in engineering and fabrication most of my life. I started this as a hobby about 6 months ago after watching 'Forged in Fire', and I thought I'd have a bash at making a knife, so I built a small gas forge and experimented with heat treating different metals to see what would make a good blade, then I made a belt sander and a jig for whetstones for putting an edge on the blades, then before I knew it I'd spent a small fortune, so I had to continue making blades to try to justify it
I'm considering doing it full time but I really need to make or buy a power hammer, because I'm far too old and lazy to be swinging a hammer all day. Then I'll need a bigger forge and belt sander
But knowing me as I do, I'll probably get bored with it and move on to something else.

What's the resale value of the equipment like? :D

Sounds like you've got the bug though :)

Your steel reminded me a bit of the knife in this:

So I put a £20 Nobsound Bluetooth amp kit in this one and some old Sony bookshelf speakers and accessorised it with some old blocks of oak I had on my desk...

It sounds lush :)

See, I've looked at some of the Nobsound hi-fi kit, and it looks decent, but the name! I mean fucking hell, don't they have English-speakers to tell them "fuck no, don't call it that! People won't buy it if it has a stupid name!"?

All those wonderful power hammers in his yard and he's still doing the hard work manually. A glutton for punishment. :D
That's a lovely blade though.

Ordered this months ago Boudicca. Ruined one go, luckily ordered enough for another go. Then I need to strip the varnish back and stain it. Will report back in another couple of months ;).

I got there eventually Boudicca. Although I won't show you the underside :hmm: :D.
Stripping and sanding it has left a patchy red tinge, don't know whether to attack it with more varnish remover (nitro mors has gone shite since health and safety) then steel wool and white spirit, or just chuck some cedar oil on it. Rustic like (or lazy if you prefer) :)

All opinions, criticism welcomed.

That looks great!

My upholstery teacher got me to use steel wool dipped in wax on my chair, so you are working the wax in at the same time as stripping the varnish. This works well.

(You are right about Nitromors)

Shit name isn't it. They do the job though, lovely sound, good connectors and pretty decent range on the bluetooth connection. You can buy all the gubbins separately but by the time you've got the lot it's just as cheap to buy one of these all sealed up.
