Crafty Thread - what are you working on at the moment?

Not a great photo, but here's my second upholstery project finished a while back, a quick foam and staples job, much to the disgust of my (traditional upholstery) teacher. I've had to abandon my original class as I spent too much time arguing with the teacher. For instance, he didn't think I should use a dressmakers tape measure as 'they stretch'. Yea, so your warped wooden ruler is going to a more accurate job?

So I have now signed up with a more local teacher who is cheaper, probably not as good but definitely more encouraging. I'm halfway through a 40s armchair for a friend so I have no option but to carry on.

I took up making knives as a hobby a few months ago. This was my first.

It's a 440C stainless blade with a twill weave carbon fibre handle.

I've just finished this one.

It's a 64 layer 15N20/1095 forged Damascus spine with a VG10 core and a black/blue layered micarta handle.
Only problem is I like them too much to use them as anything but ornaments. :D
I take it you need some specialist stuff for the steel rods?

I didn't do the North, east, south west thing! It was only after a look on YouTube I realised I'd done it completely wrong. I went round bit by bit .
Much happier with a chisel and saw.
Foraged some logs and and started to make a bench. Seat stripped and needs planing. Legs need stripping and some sawing next.

Pub stool when the weather moves me indoors.
I'd love to do some woodwork. :)

To the untrained eye it looks like you're done with teachers. That's beautiful, I'm off to sit in the corner and suck my thumb. Slithers off thread :D

Those are stunning. How long does one take? I'm guessing it's not a quick job.

Thanks... After sourcing the material, the first one took about a week. The second one took about a month, but that included a week scratching my head wondering what to use for the handle.

They're fucking ace mate :cool::thumbs:

I've got a shed full of wood cut for my next two projects but my hands are fucked at the moment and I've promised my surgeon I'll give it a rest but I'm dieing to get back to my belt sander and chisels :(

Cheers. They've been a labour of love. I can see now why decent knives are so expensive.

I love making sawdust. :D
I'm trying to find a second hand 72" x 2" belt sander for doing the knife blades and handles. The price of them new is ridiculous. I'm using a home made thing at the moment but I need something a bit heftier.

I have one of these. It's the mutts nuts for the money. You can set it on a bench upside down which will work for what you're doing ;)

Cracking piece of kit for the price.

I'm very impressed!

Scandinavian grind?

It's not very visible but they're both hollow ground, with a 16 deg edge.
I spent an age sharpening them, with 10 different grades of stone, and had a full (facial) shave with the second one when I'd finished. They are literally razor sharp, and kept that way with a strop.

Axe? friedaweed has just got a hard-on! :D
I have a knife (or two) that could fix that :D

Got one as a wedding gift from my Viking brother.

I do love the marriage of steel and wood
I've got wood... for the handle of the axe... lots of woods. I don't know which I'll be using yet but I'll be marrying it with bull horn and brass.

Want.

Its very satisfying and stress relieving wielding a hammer.
A friend gave me this cos he knows I like wood (no sniggering at the back) it's been polished.

Got a gnarled driftwood looking log in the boot of my car. Going to a attempt a lamp table. She says :hmm:.

If I ever do get an actual real house with a garage and everything I want to try making something along the lines of these.

They're beautiful. I'd love a garage/ workshop with all the gadgets too. Luckily I live rural so can make a fair bit of hammer chisel noise with no issues, although weather on the hill even in summer can be unpredictable.

I've just about finished the Damascus hatchet. It just needs a proper sharpening now.
I don't think it turned out tea bag.

It's a 1095/15N20 Damascus blade with an Italian Olive burl wood and bull horn handle, with a bit of brass and red G10 for decoration.
I had a few 50mm lengths of a 4-leaf shamrock design EDM machined to make handle pins for the knives. Have a look at EDM machining, it's amazing!

I like hollow grinds, but they're hard to get right, and hard to easily maintain IME. For me, Scandinavian is a good compromise, but as ever, it's horses for courses, and I prefer a folding pocket knife to sheath knifes, too. Blasphemy, according to a knife-collecting mate. :D

You wouldn't even need to put any pressure on the blade, it'd just...well, we know what would happen, and I've just crossed my legs!

Now friedaweed has wood too!

I can imagine one of the Irish fellas in "Gangs of New York" would have liked your be-shamrocked hatchet. :)

I'm always pleased to see stuff made with a full tang, and the grip fully anchored to the blade, and when the piece is utilitarian AND beautiful to look at...Congratulations, for what they're worth.

BTW, I HATE olive wood. Horrible corrosive stuff if you don't clean your tools thoroughly after working it.
