Crafty Thread - what are you working on at the moment?

Well, it's taken me a ridiculously long time, but lo and behold, one traditionally upholstered chair, done with rather un-traditional fabric and 'lazy American' (quote from tutor) double piping. Whilst I do appreciate the skill required, I feel I am going to be more of a foam and staples kind of woman.

I'm actually really enjoying my Monday afternoon sessions and am continuing for the foreseeable future.

I love that fabric. I've got an old pub stool I want to upholster. Where did you get that from?

Glad someone else appreciates my weird taste in fabric. :)

I thought I bought it on Ebay, but I can't find it in my purchase history. How much do you need? I will have some left over, but I haven't cut the fabric for the second chair yet.

Ah, here it is on Amazon

Recently, I've been working hard on costumes for an African dance group. Nothing fancy, but I'm pleased with how they turned out. (Yes, they are mostly white but this is Bournemouth remember...)

Does anyone know anything about making wings for a Rosetta costume for a 6 year old? I think I've got the dress worked out but all the wing tutorials are for adults and seem to need quite a tight structured bodice with a bit of coat hanger stuck down the back of the dress.

I made myself some wings - don't ask - with organza stretched over wire coat hangers (thinner wire would be fine but I didn't have any) with 2 loops of elastic that you put your arms in, which means its easy enouh to take them off. Could that work for your 6 yr old?

Thank you

( Looks forward to pictures of a winged friendofdorothy)

I've been bending hangers but I don't think I will get them into a decent Rosetta wing shape, they look a bit naff and it seems quite dangerous for a 6 year old. I was pondering cable ties in the DIY shop yesterday. Found some interesting wire cable too, bends better but pricey. I may resort to cardboard...

Loops of elastic, yes, most of the kids wings have these.

Grrr, making a wall-hanging dishdrainer...from some half-arsed idea...and deeply regretting faffing around with dowel. Lining up 39 x 12mm rods, in 3 different planes and directions, on the kitchen table, is seriously trying my mental equilbrium. Never, ever again.

If I manage to finish( and it isn't a tragedy), will post a pic.

Already slashed my finger on my jigsaw.

I took up making knives as a hobby a few months ago. This was my first.

It's a 440C stainless blade with a twill weave carbon fibre handle.

I've just finished this one.

It's a 64 layer 15N20/1095 forged Damascus spine with a VG10 core and a black/blue layered micarta handle.

Only problem is I like them too much to use them as anything but ornaments. :D

Ordered this months ago Boudicca. Ruined one go, luckily ordered enough for another go. Then I need to strip the varnish back and stain it. Will report back in another couple of months ;).

How did you manage to ruin it?

Suggest putting a big chalk cross on the fabric to divide it up into quarters. Then put one tack in north/south/ then east/west before filling in the gaps. And it needs to be taut.

I didn't do the North, east, south west thing! It was only after a look on YouTube I realised I'd done it completely wrong. I went round bit by bit .
Much happier with a chisel and saw.
Foraged some logs and and started to make a bench. Seat stripped and needs planing. Legs need stripping and some sawing next.
