Buying a home and don't know how anything works

Oh I really hope it's gas..don't like cooking on electric hobs. I'll see. No massive rush though.

I've now had the following donated for my new place: mattress, wardrobe, chest of drawers x 2, big desk 👍 👍
Oh wonderful. You could move in with those things and your kettle and toaster and have a pretty lovely new home in a few hours. Is there a launderette within walking distance? If there is, and you can bear the expense, I’d recommend getting your bedding washed and ironed on a service wash, while you’re in the disarray of moving in. For the early months we’d moved in here but it didn’t yet feel like a proper home, having fresh ironed bed linens every week or two was a special comfort.

Ah well I have to give four weeks notice on my current place, so I'm imagining there will be a bit of time when I have the keys to this place and the new place. And during that time I will definitely be making copious use of the washing machine, tumble dryer and hoover from the rented place 👍

;)
I'm currently 'camping' on a single trundle bed in a new flat, because I got Ikea to deliver the bed and wardrobe I bought in store, but I've looked at the instructions and need two people to assemble the damned things.
That may be precautionary. With a bit of effort, depending on the person, a single person could possibly do it. You never know until you try ( mind you don't hurt yourself though)

I managed to build a bed and two wardrobes on my own even though the advice was for two people. I had to be a bit inventive and prop things up with other bits of furniture, boxes etc. so everything was aligned but it is possible.

If you want a Hypnos mattress don't pay the prices that Premier Inn are asking. Have a look on line -EBay etc. have mattresses at over less than half the price and they are new and unused.

The major sites like John Lewis and Curry's were, until at least a few days ago, saying they'd only deliver to the pavement. Even if you were getting your old appliance recycled by them, you had to get it out there yourself.

I ordered a tumble dryer from John Lewis a month or so ago, it was delivered to the door, or for an extra £8, installation service. Which in this case was wheeling it on a sack trolley and plugging it in. I didn’t fancy my chances of doing it myself so stumped up the £8

Bizarrely Curry's were willing to come in if you paid for installation (of a fridge freezer, not exactly hard work) but would only take your old appliance away if you took it to the pavement. So it was really nothing to do with covid, since they were already in the flat, but them taking the opportunity to charge the same money for less service, and make the delivery guys fit more deliveries into their schedule.

This is the bathroom. Not sure what's going on with the floor there. Screenshot_20210509-151216_Chrome.jpg

And part of the living room. Is that fire thing something that people take? Is it decorative or actually provides heat? Also, check out the psychedelic wallpaper 😮20210509_152138.jpg

I've got a feeling that wallpaper is by Angel from Escape to the Chateau. At least it looks like what she was doing with odd rolls she'd found in the chateau. I don't know anyone else who's actually watched that programme so this probably means nothing....and could be wrong.

The fire will be something like this:

Might not be very powerful, that one in the link is only 2KW.

Yes, just having another look at the F&F form. Would it be called a "wall heater" or an "electric fire"?

Either.

ETA: wall heater could be a radiator or another electric device. Electric fire would defo be it.

Personally think they are ugly and they stick out, but each to their own.

I've seen most of them. Not sure it's zaney enough to be by Angel :D

miss direct What's odd about the bathroom floor?

scifisam both my fridge & cooker came from Curry's. Fridge in January & cooker late March.

But you didn't ask them to take an old appliance away. I 100% guarantee they were refusing to do that from anywhere other than the pavement. I'm January I even emailed to ask if they'd make any exceptions and they said no.

When Currys delivered my current washing machine, I'd booked and paid for installation and removal of the old one - they pulled the old one out and there was a dead mouse under it, they refused to do anything further as it was apparently a health and safety risk being in my kitchen so they just left both washing machines in the middle of my kitchen.

at the risk of being declared not PFWC, it was john lewis who delivered / installed new washing machine and removed old one a few months ago.

British Heart Foundation do have shops that do furniture and electricals - although washing machines now seem designed to fail after a few years and not be repairable - they were prepared to deliver but not to remove old / knackered one at the time.

They took away my old cooker & brought my new one in.

Is it a free-standing oven? Vaguely recall you mentioning that. They can be gas only, electric only or dual fuel (electric oven, gas hob). I think gas ovens still use the 'gas mark' system rather than having the oven temperature marked in degrees, so that will be a clue. Gas ovens are pretty crap, gas hobs obviously good. Hence the appeal of a dual fuel thing...

Personally prefer fitted appliances. The oven will usually be fixed into a cabinet beneath the hob... The hob will be mounted in the worktop. Neater. And it gives more flexibility in terms of appliance choice... e.g I have quite a wide 5-ring hob mounted over a standard sized oven. However reconfiguring your kitchen can get bloody expensive, so probably best working with what you've got.

You can of course just ask if there's gas. But if they don't know there are clues - boiler will generally be gas, but if the hot water is a cylinder it's probably electric. If there are plumbed-in radiators, probably also gas... This is because gas is cheaper per KWh, so effectively the system just heats water and pumps it round. Electric heating systems will produce heat directly - more efficient. That fake fire is electric, but could just be a later addition.

If you need any advice on kitchens etc, feel free to get in touch... It's not really what I do, but I have fitted a couple. The guys above my workshop do a lot more of that kind of thing, but we're all kind of on the expensive end of things.

Thanks! Very useful. I prefer fitted ovens too, but really depends on price.

Yeah it’s going to be ‘in the thousands’. I think IKEA and a fitter you might be able to get in around £3-4k total (depending on appliances, configuration etc) but honestly not sure. Last one I did was £10k (labour and materials, not appliances etc), but that involved some restoration and a lot of bespoke parts. And it’s obviously pretty disruptive. See what you’ve got for now…
