Britain’s best and worst seaside towns

My parents live in Weston and I live near Morecambe- love a good shit seaside town. Morecambe has lovely views, an ace little market and is a pleasant place for a stroll along the prom. Weston is a strange place, lots of weird little shops and some 'interesting' people, near some lovely beaches and countryside, more great views and I miss it when I don't go there for a while. Went to Silloth the other day, that was a strange seaside town. I liked it but was one of those places where you can't use your card if spending under a fiver and the poshest place to eat was showing The Antiques Roadshow on a big screen and some old women ( the only people in there) were cross because the people on it weren't socially distancing. The episode was about five years old. There was also on of those great shops you get in ungentrified seaside towns which sell toilet seats, a strange brand of bargain make-up, cheap crisps in unpopular flavours and penny sweets.

Just got back from a few days in Morecambe, with a view to moving there soon. The West End is desperately faded and grim, but for some reason I quite like it. Locals kept telling us that as soon as Eden Project North is built it'll revitalize the whole area, I kind of hope they're right but I doubt it somehow. I think we will move there - relatively cheap housing, proximity to the Lake District, good birdwatching area, good cycling, evening strolls along the promenade, plus Lancaster looks an interesting place!

Definitely recommend it. Quite an old school system, if the little open top ferry boat isn't there he'll be on the other side of the River Deben, on the Bawdsey side, so you pick up a paddle thing at the end of the pier and wave it, he'll spot you and nip back across. Check out Bawdsey Manor, lots of history, as you probs know, it's where radar was developed in WW2, all very hush-hush.

No I didn't know that! Have been to Orford Ness where there used to be nuclear weapons research, so will definitely check out Bawdsey Manor.

One of my best friends from Blackpool got taken to Morecambe on holiday - I fucking pissed myself.

Yep, that is unfortunate! Still, Morecambe is an upgrade on Blackpool imho. Plus, could've been worse, could've been Fleetwood.

Jesus, I'm glad I didn't grow up in Morecambe. Nothing to do in comparison to home. When I worked at Blackpool Pleasure Beach they sent me to Frontierland to work for the day (BPB owned it), but that's all the time I've spent there.Home might be tacky in some people's eyes, but it was heaven as a kid with the arcades and rides.

Grimsby and Cleethorpes ARE the best for chipoils.

Beckett's is great. I used to go into the Seaway sometimes for fish, chips, bread and butter and tea after an afternoon in the Notts and Willy's. In Grimsby, Littlecoates chippy was a gem, and the Farebrother Street chippy, owned by a diminutive Chinese karate expert who for some reason had no trouble with the local youth, did lovely fish patties and pea fritters. St James chippy opposite Brighowgate bus station is still there and still good, having seen off the Fish n Chik next door some years ago.
You've made me homesick. Normally I'd be there this time of year, on the prom, eating chips looking at the river.

Ironically I'm posting from the seaside in Essex
And I'm planning to make F&C with mushy peas (not crushed this time but proper overnight soaked mushy peas) and triple cooked chips here in Córdoba. It'll be cod because I can't get haddock.

I went there for the first time last Friday in a furlough outing. The town left much to be desired but I took the train to the end of the pier and spend a couple of hours reading a book in the middle of the Thames Estuary which was blissful.

You can see the QE2 bridge at Dartford from there 20 miles to the east, and the Kentish Flats windfarm 20 miles to the west. Best pier in the world.

The West End could be Brighton or Islington, the houses are beautiful but the area is very rundown- I nearly put in an offer on a six bedroom one for under 100 grand but glad I didn't in the end as two friends who lived in the area really suffered with neighbours as sadly lack of community support for people with severe mental health problems who get put in the cheap rooms for rent can be problematic for all concerned. I live in Lancaster and so Morecambe is a lovely place to visit, a ten minute train ride. Not all areas are like that of course and Morecambe is a friendly place but like all areas has its problems and recent financial issues has not helped the West End which is a shame. Was a lovely little sreet there with some interesting shops but so many have gone now. The Paulton area is lovely with some older houses and close to beach etc. Would live there quite happily myself as all the things you said are true but boyfriend ( from Fleetwood!) not so keen. I recommend a visit to the West End on a rainy winter Sunday morning before buying. Lancaster is a mostly great little city, going to miss the music festival this year but lots of good pubs, places to eat etc. So many places to explore nearby as well. Feel free to message if you want any more info :)

There's a great bowling alley there now, all posh and new but costs a fortune compared to the more scabby old one which was knocked down. Happy Mount Park is brilliant too but they started charging for the water park and timing admission :-(

Leysdown, Isle of Sheppey, used to have brilliant Sunday afternoon raves years ago. Way beyond the arcades and the kiosks and along by the nudist beach..

Thanks for that - much appreciated. My partner is a nurse and has been offered a job at Lancaster Hospital, so we actually looked at three flats for sale in Morecambe, and one in Knott End on Sea (a strange place!), but none of them appealed particularly, so we decided we're going to rent for six months first, spotted quite a nice one in Poulton, so it's reassuring you say it's a nice place.. We were also considering Carlisle which is also quite cheap, but looks like we've settled on Morecambe/Heysham. (Anyway, sorry for thread derail)

Until the 2000s, Poulton was nice old biddies and gentle life. Since then, it's become popular with young professionals who refuse to live in Blackpool (like Lytham), as the older generation has passed away.

It's nice enough - don't think you´ll be exposed to a surplus of cosmopolitan opinion there though.

Knott End is weird- good luck with it all :)

I was referring to the Poulton area of Morecambe, not the Poulton- Le- Fylde of estate agents necking 'fizz' near Blackpool- good charity shops though

Two Poultons so close! I didn't even know!

I'm a short walk down a track from Jaywick. Got halfway there last night but the light was fading. Idly wondering if I should actually go for a look before the end of my holiday.

Anyone mention Weymouth? I had some nice holidays there as a kid, but can't remember much!
pretty old town harbour on one side and then on the other the beach is good - good for kids especially as its a protected bay and has a gentle deepening, town is alright - yeah its good all in all - a bit busy for me though, but i think for a family its a good bet. Beach somehow feels too near the streets though. Portland is weird  Chesil beach creeps me out a bit.

With Weymouth can you walk really far out into the sea? I tried to look it up but can't see anything.
