What is it like as a black belt?
Have you got 2 stripes yet? (the power to give out belts and make other black belts is kinda vampiric :D).

Brown belt is fucking boring man!!
I've been black belt for 3 years and have done no more than 3 months training

got a bad lower back injury just before getting my black belt so couldn't train (only teach) and then as I was clsoe to returning, Covd hit. Started back properly training Oct/Nov time and then mid December got covid and I reckon it'll be 2 weeks until back sparring  Jsut before I got Covid I would have placed myself as purple belt level. Reckon it'll take me a good 6-9 months to actually get back to circa black belt level, so not really the best person to ask! ha

Oh shit, is that just recovery time from how ill you were with the covid?
yep.

In bed for 10 days, and then have had long covid symptoms since.

2 weekends ago i did my 6 minute-ish warm up i do before a work out and spent the entirity of the next day in bed. I was getting completely wiped out by 15 press ups.

Does, positively, seem to be improving considerably over the last few days - haven't had to sleep once in the day for the past 4 days and have only been sleeping 9 hours at night. Can do my 6 min warm up fine now and did specifics at the end of the fundamental class i taught on Monday (largely fine but then I was just in mount on white belts so....). Weirdly my right arm does keep aching and then going numb

Fuck, sorry to hear that but glad it seems to be getting better now. The arm thing sounds like something it might be worth getting checked out though.

Just found out we have a specific leg lock class on Friday evenings now  Tonight covered an entry I've been trying and failing to work out from a video for weeks now too.

My ex-training partner, now a BJJ brown belt, won most of his MMA fights (he has a Sherdog record) with leg locks, he trained Sombo early days and had a lexicon of nasty heel hooks, leg locks, Achilles cranks etc before he started BJJ. Scary stuff if you have never had on put on.....

I don't train anymore, but I did about six months of regular classes a few years ago. Ultimately it was too expensive to keep along with a gym membership but I did enjoy. I will say that there's no better cardio workout than rolling. I prepared myself by doing a ton of running before my first class and I didn't have anywhere near the wind I expected. Of course, I was doing the normal whitebelt spaz out stuff since I was a beginner.

How come it took you 6 months to realise it was too expensive?

Just wondering, why is purple the best belt? You have the respect of the lower belts (mmmm) but without the pressure of the higher belts? Seems people think leg locks are fair game on purples. I don't mind knee bars or heel hooks, but toe holds!!

more seriously I think a combination of factors. Often it's when you have enough all round knowledge that you generally have an idea what you should be doing in all areas. If you find your progression in one area is stalling you can easily switch to another as you have enough knowledge to focus on other areas. You can really start working on your weaknesses with more confidence as you have enough base understanindg of concepts, so areas of weakness at white/blue you can resolve quicker. you often have enough knowledge that you can be effective against all body shapes and types. You may start teaching a little then which helps further develop your knowledge.

TLDR: your jiujitsu starts to flow and you don't have the pressure associated with brown and especially black belts

As you’re all a much higher grade than me, I was hoping you might be able to give me some pointers…… I’m quite a big heavy guy, and obviously that has it pros and cons, but when rolling with other big heavy guys as soon as they get me in side mount, I can’t get an escape because of their strength, and I’m just absolutely running out of steam as their weight is just stopping from getting any air in my chest. I fell like theyre just smashing me because I seem to end up in guard to start, and they always just be able to out strong me into mount and then side mount and then just take my wind away. Obviously I know some escapes but with the bigger guys who just want to use strength and weight to their advantage I feel at the moment that’s just trashing me, I’m much more a technique guy and like gentle rolls where I’ll give up positions to help people learn and would hope others would do that for me, but the two blokes who are about my size in our group have no interest in doing that and just want to assert dominance, even if they’re not successful in getting a submission. Any suggestions on dealing with that in a roll?

How heavy are you?

I am a smaller guy at 5 ft 8/ mid-70s and have learnt the following when up against bigger opponents.

  • develop a good half-guard and make sure you posture up/ block their arm so they can't cross face.
  • half-guard to dog fight position is great against bigger folk/ fat bastards.
  • half-guard to elevator hook - this is a game changer for me as it leads to cool shit like butterfly alternatives.
  • Learn 2 on 1 grips - there are so many variations to this but I like the lapel and sleeve (same side). Its great against stronger opponents.
  • framing and the fucking stiff arm - this is a must.

Against blue belts and below - I do pretty much all of the above still.
Against purples and above, I have to initiate the attack because I will die otherwise.

Good Luck!
Remember it becomes easier as time goes on.

Also, if they are not able to submit you - that means their game isn't tight/ or your defence is good.
There should be gaps, openings for you to TIME your explosive energy.

So I’m like 5’10, but I’m also about 103kg (last time I weighed myself, I have been trying to improve my diet and lose weight drastically, but do need to improve my cardio too)…..

I watched some vids last night and noticed I do tend to lie flat, and that’s a habit I really need to break, I also like to work things out so tend to take time to do that, but im clearly not buying time to do that……. I’m a black belt in another martial art so appreciate technique, where as the other heavier white belts have no background, so they just want to strong arm everything and not lose.

I’ll Google some of those bullet points, have you got any good YouTube channels to follow?

I’ve been told I’m a sneaky escaper, but sometimes I just get stuck and it’s almost always on the bottom of a side mount, I need to learn some more submits (arm locks for example) from the bottom too as I know there’s some I’ve been shown and I’m missing.

Also has anyone got any suggestions of good things to wear under my Gi? I have base layer shorts and top from the other martial art I do, but it’s short leg/arm, and I keep finding abrasions on my extremities, but I also get super hot so need something cool.

Learning RGJJ seems a very slow process, but I really enjoy the process…… if I hadn’t done another martial art with a much faster grading process before I think I’d get frustrated with this, but I think they’ll compliment each other well when I’m reasonable at this…… even the breakaway techniques are good for now as we can be at risk of violence at work and they teach us literally nothing about dealing with that.

What is your other martial art? BJJ isn't my first but I like how martial artists make the most engaging conversation - I can seriously get nerded out.

BJJ is no different. There are hundreds of combos, chains-moves, techniques that people will swear by - but those techniques may never work for you.
As WIng Chun/JKD students may say - are you fire, wood, earth. water etc?

At the start of your BJJ journey, I strongly recommend that you learn escapes (sounds like you're already on the right path) and framing etc. And given your size, learn to fight from your back and build a decent stand up game (top game you don't need to worry as its easy to develop). Agree about subs from the bottom - have you tried the loop choke? They're quite fun and easy to do.

John Danaher did an excellent judo for BJJ and a half guard vid - its on youtube somewhere.
Chewjitsu makes great instructionals that centred around white/ blue belts.

Dude, also you know you're heavy for the size. What happened?
Fitness and power - without these basic foundations, you're going have a tough journey.

What to wear under the gi if you're getting too hot?
Wear nothing! Abrasive I know - otherwise, get a rashguard or spats.
