All aboard the 303 bus.
So my place was initially a Choi Kwon Do school, and then went onto a system it developed with a couple of schools in the US, its still basically CKD but was rebranded and had some throws and stuff added in. So there's no lineage and no-one knows what it is, but the nearest comparable is CKD.What is your other martial art? BJJ isn't my first but I like how martial artists make the most engaging conversation - I can seriously get nerded out.
BJJ is no different. There are hundreds of combos, chains-moves, techniques that people will swear by - but those techniques may never work for you.
As WIng Chun/JKD students may say - are you fire, wood, earth. water etc?
At the start of your BJJ journey, I strongly recommend that you learn escapes (sounds like you're already on the right path) and framing etc. And given your size, learn to fight from your back and build a decent stand up game (top game you don't need to worry as its easy to develop). Agree about subs from the bottom - have you tried the loop choke? They're quite fun and easy to do.
John Danaher did an excellent judo for BJJ and a half guard vid - its on youtube somewhere.
Chewjitsu makes great instructionals that centred around white/ blue belts.
Dude, also you know you're heavy for the size. What happened?
Fitness and power - without these basic foundations, you're going have a tough journey.
What to wear under the gi if you're getting too hot?
Wear nothing! Abrasive I know - otherwise, get a rashguard or spats.
Ill keep on with the escapes and framing, I don't know the loop choke but I'll have a google. I actually do RGJJ rather than BJJ so not sure if loop choke is a taught choke, but the premise seems to be if a choke chokes, then its a choke.
I've seen chewjitsu vids and subbed, I'll have a look at John Danaher.
My weight is something I really struggle with. In teen/twenties/very early thirties my life was very much computer games, raving, drinking and drugs (although I was super keen on waterspouts as a teen), I decided to do a diet when I was about 31/32, dropped from 112kg to 88kg in 15 months and took up two new sports (Choi Kwon Do and SCUBA Diving), but my diet (1400 calories) wasn't being sustainable and I stopped being militant and slowly the weight got back up to 108kg but I kept up the sports and took up JJ and changed job to something a bit more active (although I do sit on my arse quite a bit at work), however I've really tailed off on going to the gym. So I've slowly been getting diet back under control, hence losing 5kg again with a long term aim of getting back to 90 ish but not doing a stupid diet in the process so its sustainable. Also get back into the gym and get my cardio a bit better again.
Its more the rash thats bothering me tbh, I'm always covered in grazes on my forearms which is an infection risk at work.
