Brazilian Jiu Jitsu thread

What is your other martial art? BJJ isn't my first but I like how martial artists make the most engaging conversation - I can seriously get nerded out.

BJJ is no different. There are hundreds of combos, chains-moves, techniques that people will swear by - but those techniques may never work for you.
As WIng Chun/JKD students may say - are you fire, wood, earth. water etc?

At the start of your BJJ journey, I strongly recommend that you learn escapes (sounds like you're already on the right path) and framing etc. And given your size, learn to fight from your back and build a decent stand up game (top game you don't need to worry as its easy to develop). Agree about subs from the bottom - have you tried the loop choke? They're quite fun and easy to do.

John Danaher did an excellent judo for BJJ and a half guard vid - its on youtube somewhere.
Chewjitsu makes great instructionals that centred around white/ blue belts.

Dude, also you know you're heavy for the size. What happened?
Fitness and power - without these basic foundations, you're going have a tough journey.

What to wear under the gi if you're getting too hot?
Wear nothing! Abrasive I know - otherwise, get a rashguard or spats.
So my place was initially a Choi Kwon Do school, and then went onto a system it developed with a couple of schools in the US, its still basically CKD but was rebranded and had some throws and stuff added in. So there's no lineage and no-one knows what it is, but the nearest comparable is CKD.

Ill keep on with the escapes and framing, I don't know the loop choke but I'll have a google. I actually do RGJJ rather than BJJ so not sure if loop choke is a taught choke, but the premise seems to be if a choke chokes, then its a choke.

I've seen chewjitsu vids and subbed, I'll have a look at John Danaher.

My weight is something I really struggle with. In teen/twenties/very early thirties my life was very much computer games, raving, drinking and drugs (although I was super keen on waterspouts as a teen), I decided to do a diet when I was about 31/32, dropped from 112kg to 88kg in 15 months and took up two new sports (Choi Kwon Do and SCUBA Diving), but my diet (1400 calories) wasn't being sustainable and I stopped being militant and slowly the weight got back up to 108kg but I kept up the sports and took up JJ and changed job to something a bit more active (although I do sit on my arse quite a bit at work), however I've really tailed off on going to the gym. So I've slowly been getting diet back under control, hence losing 5kg again with a long term aim of getting back to 90 ish but not doing a stupid diet in the process so its sustainable. Also get back into the gym and get my cardio a bit better again.

Its more the rash thats bothering me tbh, I'm always covered in grazes on my forearms which is an infection risk at work.

If long sleeved rashguards are going to be too hot you could try something like an elbow brace or just plain tubular bandage worn down over your forearms?

I think long sleeve is fine, I just didn’t know what to google. Thanks though I’m going to have a look.

The theory I like most in martial arts is that we take the best elements of each and incorporate it into our own fighting system - whatever that is.
RGBJJ - or whatever brand of Gracie JJ - is just branding dude (as long as your headcoach is certified and has lineage , its more or less the same).

You may get McDojos that promote their students on how much they pay but essentially, such places are rare and their students are destroyed when they roll with someone from a different club.

Yeah, I mean the head at my place is still grading too. There’s definitely lineage, he flies out to the states to train with RG regularly too.

Boy 3 was in a no gi comp today. Got a gold for a rear naked choke in 2 minutes, and was put into the absolute division at the end. He's around 73k and got some guy who was 110k! They were trying to leg/ ankle lock each other, spinning cross the mats like crocodiles. The other guy got the win a 1.41. he just muscled it.

Oh and the first time repping his new gym which was nice to see :)

Where's the best place to look for comps in Aus ice-is-forming, is stuff mostly all on smoothcomp there now too? (I'm not on Facebook)

Been looking at spending a few weeks over there end of this year and it would be good to fit in a comp while I'm there...

Yeah mate :) smooth comp, there's a fair few on. I seem to remember there's some rule changes for no gi coming soon but I don't know if it's across the board or what. Catagories will be by belt rather than by number of years experience iirc.

Today's was held by grappling industries who have a good name

Every bloody comp seems to have its own rules about no gi divisions  Grappling Industries at the moment just does beginner / intermediate / advanced, with advanced being anything over 3 years experience which is fucking batshit imo. Going by belt, with time equivalents for anyone who doesn't hold a belt rank, makes more sense.

It changes on may 1st at grappling industries to belt rank I think. not time equivalent. that's if I've read this below accurately :)

and it means less people to compete with if you're at a brown or black belt, when they go by belt. All the same people end up fighting all the same people unless you go on a plane or a long road trip.

Yeah I get that, I think merged brown/black or purple/brown/black divisions is ok (I'm light feather lol, I'm already skipping two big team comps this year just so I can go to Yorkshire and Scotland by myself to fight someone different). Three years is like newish blue belt for a lot of people though, it was ridiculous not having another experience level above that.

You getting the mega bus, that's a fair amount of travel

Either coach or train, I have a railcard so doesn't always end up costing that much more if I book at the right time. Scotland I tend to stay up there for a few days, I know people to drop in and train with and I miss living there.

Remember that year when I did like 26 comps and spent every other weekend sleeping on buses and station & airport floors? :D

Yes, yes I do. It was pretty exciting & tbf it's you :) so of course when you do something you're all in.

iona :)

You know that if you're coming to Australia you should talk with me about your itinerary, because from cheap domestic flights, the weather, to best places to train, competitions, traveling around etcetc.. i can advise :)

It's a long way to come for a couple of weeks with out a plan, what's your plan ? :) I'd love to help make it as good as it can be

Unusually for me, watched quiote a bit of ADCC and found myself enjoying it.

Some quite big upsets so far and some european success

So I'm meant to be competing at the weekend and I let someone can opener me yesterday and now I can't really move my neck

Sorry to hear that, which comp?

Fihhtzone won 10 golds at no gi Europeans!
Brighton. The one comp that there's actually pressure to enter coz it's our town and we always take a big team. FFS :D

Nice work at euros, don't think anyone from ours went this time.

Do many purple belts enter the Sussex open? Trying to find a comp with a decent size bracket to enter.

You're about my weight (light feather, thinking about moving up to feather though) iirc? We're never gonna get massive brackets outside the biggest comps :D People often enter as adult as well just to avoid missing out on opponents - pretty sure I've been in "adult" divisions where none of us was under 30...

Don't tend to have loads of people from my gym entering Sussex for various reasons but Brighton the following month should get a decent amount of entries. I've not really looked at comps for next year but I'll give you a shout if I see anything that looks good.

Heads up bromley if you did fancy the Brighton Open, cheap early registration ends tonight. They've added a third no-gi sub-only division as well as the regular ibjjf-ish gi and no gi divisions for this one.

How's everyone's training going?

I'd been feeling stuck in a rut a bit lately - really lucky to even have somewhere to train up here but moving to a much smaller, newer club is obviously limiting in some ways. I've just started doing some teaching though and that's been great for reminding me of things I'd forgotten and prompting me to work on other stuff myself even if no one else is using it.

Doing one of the globetrotters camps in April which I'm really looking forward to.
