Brazilian Jiu Jitsu thread

Out of curiosity how do you get so many injuries?
What are they and how do they occur

Off the top of my head (and this is for brown belt which has been far my worst belt injury wise)

Grade 3 tear on one of my groin muscles (light rolling trying new techniques with my head coach - was my fault) - 9 months
Grade 2 MCL - Kneebar (dogbar) - 4 months ish
Grade 1 LCL - heelhook - 3 months ish
broken collarbone - bloody judo - 2 months
fucked my lower back - 6-9 months (current)
broken metatarsal - skateboarding - 2ish months

Think that's all the major ones. Also did a part-time MSc and cared for a termainally ill relative which cut down on training time

5.5 years as a brown belt?
Jesus Christ man...you must be one of the most hardest brown belts in Europe...

Only fucking went and cursed myself!

Congratulations gawkrodger!

what do you guys think of compulsory uniforms at a club?
Nah fuck that. Fine having team patches/gis/no gi kit but it shouldn't be compulsory. Lot of money to spend if you want to train several times a week and can't do laundry between every class, apart from anything else.

Speaking of which, what do yous do with gis etc when you can't wash them straight away? Not convinced the shared washing machine in my new place (that you have to book and pay to use ) is washing stuff properly, been hanging gis in the sun to dry straight after training but they still don't smell *clean* after washing :/

Aye, on compulsory uniform.
It's a no-deal for me too.
Just so happens my club is going this way with the kids.
My son who's 8 has 2 fine gis but we been told that he must purchase a new branded one in September.
he's excellent at BJJ, been doing it for 3 years - his (top game) movement is at the same level as a adult blue belt.

I just feel disappointed with this new rule and thinking of changing clubs...

If I can't wash my gi straight away, I make sure it's aired dried.
Direct sunlight is great!! kills fungi naturally that way...:)

To competitors - What makes a good corner person? (and also, what makes a shit one)

Knowing your game and what you want from someone cornering you.

I mostly want times/points if I can't see the board and general encouragement or minor tips to help me get the thing I'm obvs working for or something else that's there to take. Repeatedly shouting the name of a technique I never use = not helpful.

Also last minute strategy fuckups that lose you the match when you could've just stalled the last 15 seconds and won by advantage or decision

asking as i may have to corner my fucking wife

i know her game inside out.
okay - i give pointers on the score and time (every minute).

I know not to say shit like 'pass the guard' or 'sweep her.'

What about shit like "try stuffing the head"
"keep low."
"watch out for the guard pull?"

I feel like I'm too personal with her.

She's done a few comps now right? Just ask what she's found helpful/not helpful from whoever was cornering her then.

I would find those kind of pointers useful but then I also like the kind of cornering that just consists of someone shouting "don't accept it, don't accept i—up up up UP UP! Stay on top!" for the extra adrenaline and raaargh:mad: except when it's not helpful in which case I just ignore whoever's coaching me lol.

Single best bit of cornering I ever heard was someone at a UAEJJF thing shouting "cook the chicken... cook the chicken" (you have to imagine it in a Brazilian accent) at his students. Apparently it means just stay there, relax, don't rush... No idea if it's an actual expression in Brazilian Portuguese or a team in-joke or what :D

I find Guard open a useful one.
Through experience I have learnt when to ignore my coach, sadly my opponent in the semi-final of the London all stars didn't and was stalling when he was losing by a penalty point! In fairness I thought i was the one losing as well!:D

Congratulations! Now you can do toe holds, knee bars, bicep slicers and all kinds of dirty shit!

Can tell you do BJJ by looking at your fingers.:D

Bicarb of soda in the washing machine ;)

Had these arty nogi pics pop up on my FB of my (brown belt) son :) IMG_20200103_160315_514.jpg IMG_20200103_160334_851.jpg

And this one I took of his team last week :)

FB_IMG_1577777388067.jpg

bellaozzydog he has autoimmune arthritis and anklyosing spondylitis/ chronic pain. Had them for over ten years since he was 15. He's on embrel, so the biggest cause of injury is catching staph or whatever else is going round. But his team all know and are mindful.

He reckons that if he hadn't been training every day since he was 17 he'd likely be in a wheel chair now. I think the only thing he's broken so far is a compound toe fracture. It's definitely what keeps him mentally well :)
