Brazil vs Croatia (Group A) Thursday 12th June 2014

Athos...Nail, head, hit, a great game being spoilt by crappy management on and off the pitch. They could look at rugby where rule changes and technology have improved the whole game.

Gotta love the amateur dramatics of footie, hilarious. But not a good lesson for the kids, unless cheating is what you're trying to teach.

I see kids get a tiny knock (in what is supposed to be a contact sport, after all), and go down writhing in simulated agony, to get a free kick/penalty/a card for the opposition. It's purely because of what they see week in and week out on 'Match of the Day'. When I was their age I'd do anything not to show that I was hurt, to the extent that I'd jump up straight after being on the wrong end of some truly homicidal fouls. It'd gone 180 degrees the other way - a change for the worse.

The disallowed goal was all the refs own work - not down to the crowd pressure.
Yeah, but you see refs blow up for that all the time. I didn't see anything wrong with it, and the keeper flapped horribly, but it would have been more unusual if he hadn't disallowed it, I think.

There is often a lot of poor reffing in the WC. I hate to say it as it sounds horribly snobby, but the best refs are from Europe or South America. How much experience did the Japanese ref have of big games like this?

Let's not be too quick to blame the refs. Their job is almost impossible when the players are constantly trying to deceive them, and when the authorities do nothing to stop it. No to mention the abuse they take on and off the pitch. Another symptom of the decline of the game, and another thing that young players seem to consider acceptable. If I'd spoken to a ref like some of the kids I see do, I'd have been royally bollocked by my manager, coaches and parents. But, again, when they see it week-in-week out, what can you expect? Especially since the FA, UEFA, FIFA etc allow it to continue.

'They do a very difficult job very badly.'

But let's not mince words. The penalty was a shocker of a decision. Refs have to know that there are players who dive. Should have been a free kick to Croatia and a yellow card for diving. Awful decision that changed the game.

I was surprised by how fragile Brazil looked though. Even with 'home' decisions from the ref, a better team would have stuffed them yesterday, I think. Panic at the back near the end, giving the ball away in terrible areas. They will need to improve.

The fact that a deliberate act of cheating made a mockery of the game as a genuine sporting contest was first and foremost the fault of the cheat, not the person who failed to catch him at it!

More importantly, it could be stamped out if there was the will amongst the authorities. Instant replays of possible penalty incidents, followed by lengthy bans for divers, would mean very few players would risk it. But is there the will to stamp out the on-pitch deceit in a game that's now rotten to th core, largely as a result of money.

I'd like to see divers charged with 'bringing the game into disrepute' after the game is reviewed by a 5th official or a panel later the same evening. They deceive the ref and change the course of the game, so I don't see any reason why they shouldn't receive an immediate 2 or 3 match ban as a result.

Give warnings that it's going to happen, then when it does I'm sure we'll soon see it stop. Would also cover off the ball incidents and anything else the ref missed but it doesn't hold up play.

Yes, I do agree with that, but it wasn't even a good dive.

I also agree that post-match bans would stamp it out. If he missed the next two games because of it, it might not seem such a clever thing to have done. As it stands, it was an act that won his team the game.

Exactly. Since we can't rely players' own integrity, we just need to ensure that the disincentive outweighs the incentive to cheat. When you can win a crucial match by diving, at the risk of very little happening if you're caught, there's a recipe for disaster.

Integrity LOL.

Football needs villains and controversy, not a panel dishing out post-game punishments.
Football matches need to be won by fair means. There is no integrity among the players - from anywhere, England included - and we should take that as a given, but whatever the officials can do to ensure that cheating doesn't pay is all to the good, imo.

I don't agree that football needs either villains or controversy. It's far better without either.

It doesn't need cheating; it's a sport, in which matches should be played in the sporting spirit, and won or lost on sporting prowess. It become meaningless when matches turn on cheating.

Your problem is that you're imagining that football is anything other than a very corrupt soap opera. The truth will set you free.

Actually, if I thought you were right, the truth would simply kill my interest in the game. There is corruption, of course, but it isn't WWF.

You will get home bias from refs. Big teams do get more penalty decisions. 'Fergie time' in the Champions League final gave Real a bit more time to get an equaliser. But that's a world away from fixed matches.

Not quite. But it's at risk of going that way unless the game's administrators do something about it.

Don't be silly. There will still be villains and controversy.

In all seriousness, if all refereeing was perfect do you think football would be significantly improved?
I think perfect refereeing is impossible. I think that having a review panel after the game will stop a lot of the disgraceful cheating that goes on, which will significantly improve the game.

I do. I hate bad ref/umpire decisions in all sports. The fewer the better, and none at all best.
I enjoy yelling at the ref and screaming about injustice. It's one of the many things that makes football one of the most unpredictable (and best) sports to watch.

I'm in it for the emotion, not the aesthetics.

I'm in it for both. Good reffing just allows me to concentrate all my emotion on the players. :)

I genuinely can't see how this would change if cheating was removed.
