Brazil vs Croatia (Group A) Thursday 12th June 2014

I don't quite understand the anti-Chiles bile. I reckon he's alright.

I loved the way that he felt obliged to switch to a camera shot of the beach when the panel twenty minutes before kick off discovered the fact that there was poverty and protests in Brazil.

Dodgey dodgey refereeing. Croatia deserved at least a draw.
Could just be incompetence - but with so much money involved and the major major political necessity of Brazil doing well from the point of view of Brazil's government as well as for the whole prestige of the event a FIFA backed fix is certainly within the bounds of possibility

I think it's unconscious. You're reffing Brazil in the first game of the world cup in Brazil in front of 60,000 Brazilians. Must be difficult to keep it impartial.

Neymar 1st score 3-1@28/1 thank you :D. Was worried until I read the rules on scorecasts that o.g's don't count so the next scorer counts as 1st scorer in the match .. betfred better pay out .. i know other bookies have payed out on Neymar as 1st scorer.

World Cup on at silly times here in the mysterious Far East and I can't function on 3 or 4 hours of broken sleep anymore, so looking forward to getting back to Blighty next week. They should postpone everything til Tuesday.

I watched the last half or so: pretty good.

But: I just can't get over seeing grown players falling to the turf making extreme grimacing faces as they writhe in pain.

The best was right near the end. Some Brazilian player went down, grabbing his butt with both hands.

What happened to your butt, dude?

What an embarrassment. The showcase of modern football at the highest level marred by cynical cheating. But, because it was Brazil - Pele, samba, beaches etc. - it'll be glossed over. FIFA need to get a grip on this sort of thing before it ruins the game entirely e.g. video replays for penalties, and very stiff punishment from diving. It's making it hard to keep loving football, and even harder to watch it with kids, many of whom not only see deliberate cheating as part of the game, but also think that getting one over the ref is something to be proud of.

Athos...Nail, head, hit, a great game being spoilt by crappy management on and off the pitch. They could look at rugby where rule changes and technology have improved the whole game.

Gotta love the amateur dramatics of footie, hilarious. But not a good lesson for the kids, unless cheating is what you're trying to teach.

I was watching with my son, who is 15, and he says ALL players do that (theatrics), it's just part of football. While I was saying only BAD players do that (i.e. those who don't play football so well and cheat). The thing is, even Neymar (I knows him now :D), who got a few hits at the start of the match and carried on, seemed to play up a bit more later.

So even the better players get tired and want to win at all costs.

I'm still thinking (((Marcelo))) :D An own goal at the opening match :(

Unlucky own goal though, I don't think he saw it and it just bounced off him. More of a deflection than a proper own goal, really.

Most own goals are probably deflections (unless it's a match fix);) The look on his face said it all, but also he wasn't substituted throughout the match, which is a good thing. And he has made a name for himself, everyone knows him now!
