I think some quite lackadaisical refereeing has enabled that. Firstly cause there's less interruptions fot free kicks, secondly less players playing for free kicks, and more counter attacks

Refs have been good I think. They've let lots of stuff go that they might have called as a foul/yellow card. It's been a little bit old school when you look back at how cards are usually dished out.

Maybe I'm imagining it, but there's been a lot less diving about?

If their performance was 'great' they would have at least looked like scoring after 80 minutes of football. Running around a lot and trying their best doesn't make them a great team.

I think there's been less reason to dive. After the first game most of the time it's been murder to get a pen.

Generally "defence" would refer to outfield players; goalkeepers are a separate role, though obviously defensive in nature.
