Assange seeks asylum in Ecuador embassy, London

It will actually be the court's decision. The CPS decide whether to pursue a failure to surrender charge if the defendant doesn't attend the first hearing; after that, it's up to the court.

As for the punishment, the maximum sentence in the magistrates' court is three months and he will get the full whack if convicted.
I suspect Assange would be happy to take the hit of 3 months inside - the problem is what happens the moment he walks out of the prison.

this doesn't let galloway off either- he was speaking in the hypothetical 'even if assange had done what was said he did it wasn't rape'.
It's also worth remembering that Assange has not been exonerated: the Swedish authorities have just decided that while he's in the Embassy it's not worth the effort.

So does that mean that the Swedish Government, in your opinion, is also complicit in rape by refusing to pursue the matter?

Do you place yourself in the position of judge and jury even when the competent authorities have decided there is no case to answer?

Is that really what you think happened?

Guardian:

The decision was taken because “all prospects of pursuing the investigation under present circumstances are exhausted” and there is “no reason to believe that the decision to surrender [Assange] to Sweden can be executed in the foreseeable future”.

assange fans will now repeat sirenas lie until its become a truth. Expect guy fawkes mask wearing twats to have some celebrations tonight
They'll already be on the train. Expect much fawning twattery outside the embassy tonight.

The Swedish statement invites more questions than it answers:

What questions were put to him via the Ecuadorian prosecutors, and what were his answers?
Why wasn't it possible to ask those questions five years ago?
How can it take more than two months to translate the report into Swedish?
Why won't it be possible to proceed with the investigation (as opposed to prosecution) without interviewing him again?
Does that mean they're relying on him to make their case?

I wonder if Trump will follow the not forgiving and forgetting path that assange recommends.. Given he's reversed on his related pre-election promises around Syria etc

Wrong - Assange lost his final UK appeal on the basis that the steps the swedes had taken via their legal system were the equivalent of charges being laid. We're now going to get every discredited myth repeated by people like you aren't we?
You've just agreed with me, I can't argue against that!

There were never any charges.
