Anyone remember the Hop Poles pub, 60 Upper Tulse Hill London SW2?

i remember the pub very well i also remember the old one my dad getting crates of beer after closing for parties at home in warnham house. i remember going in the old one while it was being knocked down the whole back walls gone and water in the basement. then the new one being built and it was rather posh in them days nice carpets and modern what a shame it looks now mum used to work in the pub cleaning in the morning then behind the bar sometimes at night or going back after cleaning it at 11o"clock when it opened. dennis and molly had the old and the new one at the beginning. i lived inthe area from about 1957 living at 29 whitley house then moved into 46 warnham house while the flates were still being built around 1960 the lifts were not even working. we moved from the area when i was 19 in 1974 its likes yesterday.
Hello
I dont know if you might remember me but molly and dennis where my grandparents
and I lived in the old Hop Poles until it came down.
Not sure how you can contact me but I will look out for a message
Thanks Martin

Hi Martin, never thought i would hear from anyone who would know much about the beginning of the pub or even more about the old one. unfortunately i don,t know much about your grandparents but my mum would as she worked with them when the new pub opened, but she is now nearly 89 and has dementia but i will try when i see her. I do remember them having a German Shepard dog, do you remember her. As i said in an earlier message all us kids used to go in the old pub when it was being pulled down, there also used to be a little sweet shop along from the old pub and a few little cottages, i remember them, that would have been in the late 50,s. Your grandparents would have remembered my mum and dad, Russell was our surname. When did you move away from the area? Look for an answer.

Loved the hop poles. drank there from around 1982 to 1988,cant remember the first manager's name, he was from Chatham, right dickhead. Alf was the next manager, top bloke. He was there for quite a few years. Had a few parties in the downstairs bar. Always good for a game of pool.

Bump, strangely I was reading about the this place in Tony Broom's funny reggae DJ memoir 'Englishman.'

He read some excerpts at this week's Brixton Book Jam. Well funny. Apparently there was some reggae night in the basement in about 2001? He also mentions Greenleaf down Landor Rd, is Shubeen the right word here? I remember bouncing around in the dark down there.

Tony Broom had some great tales to share at the BrixtonBookJam. Very much looking forward to reading his book.

I used to go to reggae nites and lunchtime sessions late 90s early noughties....it was all very haphazard and not too well attended...but the tunes were good...despite fairly average sound system...

Dunno how I have never seen this thread before. We used to play pool in the hop poles in the mid 90's, don't think we saw more than 3 other people in there ever.

I DJ'd with him down there. Mostly grim tbh. The Greenleaf was much more fun to play tunes in, lovely bunch.

Sadly it's now going to join the 'Lost Pubs of Brixton' section here, but I was wondering if anyone had any anecdotes or memories of the pub (good or bad) I could add to the feature?

All I can add is a photo of me when it was being built in 1966 by my family's building company. I thought at the time that the design was horrible. The houses across the road are still there, much gentrified.
