I’ve visited Hanoi on two occasions, 2008 and 2014. I don’t remember seeing an African. Which leads me to think your phrasing of it “being full” just might be a tad racist.

I don't want to get involved in an argument. This is a truly awful story.
Just sharing what I see based on observations of living in Turkey for a very long time. (Some) people are desperate to get out, whether they are Syrians, Afghans, Uyghurs or (some) Turks. This has got worse and worse in recent years. People have always wanted to improve their chances in life, surely that's part of being human.

The victims of this tragedy were from another part of the world, but I can only imagine they make their journeys for somewhat similar reasons.

A couple of sources report Mimi Vu, an expert on Vietnamese people trafficking, as saying Vietnamese who go that route are often provided with fake Chinese passports. The police have made no official comment about ID or passports found on the bodies.

Do you know why? The chinese passports I mean. Are there countries when in transit that are open to chinese people without visas but not vietnamese? Was thinking maybe going via china but then different language combined with ethnicity (know there are han etc in vietnam and presumably visa versa but with language as well) would be a bit of a giveaway

I would speculate that it makes it easier to join established snakehead smuggling routes that were set up to move Chinese people. Not being able to speak Mandarin wouldn't be a giveaway and appearance wise most Vietnamese are within the range of ethnicities found in China.
