39 dead in lorry container in Essex, October 2019

Is it likely to be a very long sentence?

Yes, and they are scum. But what sentence fits this crime, (if found guilty)? They didn’t mean to kill them, yet their greed lead to so many people dying in appalling conditions. Manslaughter can attract life and imo should here, but as to the minimum rec, should it be longer than the average for a single case of actual murder? Tough call on the judge.

It won’t be a life sentence. Should be though, and swallow the key.

Read something written today by someone deployed as a police family liaison officer (FLO) to some of the bereaved families left behind. Truly devastating.

It's the maximum they can get.

Life is, it’s the minimum rec that interests me, can be nothing (euthanasia cases), or whole life, or anything in between. I have a weird thing about this and have been discombobulated about what is right here, 18 feels about right, but nothing can make it right, yet in spite of their cuntishness they are not as bad as humans as those who go out looking to kill. These things occupy my thoughts, I have no idea why.

This is one of the things with the murder / manslaughter debate though - is some 17 year old idiot kid who stabs another 17 year old to death as part of an idiotic spat really worse than people who lock 39 others into a container (after getting them to pay five figure sums for the privilege) who then suffocate to death?

Personally (and I fully accept this is an extreme case and so a really bad one to cite in justification of legal changes) I think this is the sort of thing that can really only be dealt with by consecutive sentences, rather than some notional "life" sentence. The law has (rightfully in most cases) gone away from being a deterrent of the pour encourager les autres type, but the people who do this really do need to have the thought in the back of their minds that if the people in the container / the people on the pinched RIB in the channel / the people jumping onto moving trains die as the result of what they are making a fortune out of then they are going to go away for a significant number of decades.

This is very bizarre mate. In that I've just been sitting here contemplating exactly this sort of stuff and wondering how to or if to write it down.

I disagree. I have a problem with the concept of manslaughter sometimes. While it definitely is correct for a lot of cases, and it covers a wide range, I actually think it literally lets people get away with murder sometimes. I know people smuggler's don't set out to murder. But sometimes their actions lead to those deaths and I kinda see that as murder. I'm on the liberal/radical side of prison but for these people 18 years inside doesn't seem enough (and I'm not convinced they will get 18 years).

I'm almost on the side of 'nobody should go to prison' because, well, let's face it, it's roots are in medieval torture and even today we send far too many people there for who it doesn't work. Recidivism is massive. So the modern day justification of 'rehabilitation' doesn't apply because it isn't working. So lots of people shouldn't be in prison. But these cunts should. For a long time.

I've been reading a bit about people trafficking recently. It's the lowest of the low, and it's pretty much global.

No doubt they all deserve to rot, but what is the prerequisite for a life sentence. Is it not dangerousness? I don’t understand how “dangerousness” is decided upon?

They didn't set out to kill, and the deaths of the people in their care actually meant that they wouldn't get paid, so it was definitely not in their interests that harm come to these people. But it was because of the careless way that they treated these people that directly caused their deaths. I hope they get a decent sentence, 18 years doesn't seem too bad for me, and as for prison or not, these perpetrators and their like should be in prison.

Is that so? I thought these are cash-in-advance arrangements.

My understanding was that this was a cash on delivery arrangement.

I only read that recently.

eta I read that they would be kept in a flat in UK until their payments came through.
