Your daily cat and kitten news

I might be seen as cruel, but I've never given any of my cats treats.
The closest we get to that is that Jakey has his pills in pill putty.

Due to his frequent inability to aim his out-pipe accurately, we often get cat shit on the newspaper I put under the litter trays. Today it was an image of Angela Rayner that was, ahem, decorated.

Inaccurate or a tory kitty?

i managed similar once, when one of the mogs jumped on to the bed a bit vigrously, i rolled over and managed to turf the other mog, who was asleep on the other side of the bed, on to the floor.

I once pulled the duvet and rolled a cat in loaf formation onto her back - it was a rare glimpse of the loaf undercarriage, as she was too startled to move for a second or two.

Oh my lovely old Jones, she was a great cat.

Jakey used to lay on his back a lot, but not since Sonic died, so I think it might have been something he did specifically for Sonic - either to show submission, or to show that all his weapons were at the ready just in case - Sonic was very dominant and an inveterate bully (he sometimes bullied me too, if he wanted or didn't want something!).
They loved one another but there were often mild contretemps between the two.

Inaccurate or a tory kitty?

or a far left kitty?

B Kliban cartoon showing two Kilbat tabby cats, both wearing something akin to red army uniforms. One has a speech bubble saying 'Mao'. The other is investigating something on the carpet near a mousehole in the skirting board and speech bubble reads 'Mousie Dung'

(he sometimes bullied me too, if he wanted or didn't want something!).

Reading back, I realise this sounds really bizarre and needs some explanation.
Sonic was incredibly intelligent and a very intense cat.
He was very well socialised and never ever bit anyone in his life.
On occasion though, if he wanted my attention, or wanted me to stop doing something, he would open his mouth and place it around my hand or arm or ankle and glare at me.
Wouldn't break the skin even, and never followed through with it, but the threat of "I could bite you hard if I wanted to" was impicit.

Devious little sod, I miss him so much!

i used to know someone who volunteered at a big cat sanctuary - he got the same from one of the snow leopards once or twice

With my darling Sonic I would tilt my head to the side, glare back at him, and sternly say "NO". (After which he would usually come and give me a cuddle and try to make it up to me).

I'd probably take a different tack if a snow leopard did it to me though, he'd be getting whatever he wants without further discussion

Yes, I got a water dispenser for mine, which worked really well, until Sgarba discovered just how fun making it glug was. She soaked that corner twice. Back to a dish!
One thing I find useful is giving the cat section of the pet accessories shop a swerve and looking at dog bowls instead - my cat isn't even that big, but he's not dainty when he eats or drinks and can easily tip over or push around water or food bowls - big ceramic dog bowls I find are best for water, and plates or pie dishes tend to work well as food bowls, if you have a cat that is a bit enthusiastic and pushes/tips the sort of bowl you see cats gently licking food out of in cat food adverts :D

Been through a few bowls that have "Good Dog" type statements emblazoned on them :D

We found one that Bernard liked after much faffing about. It's elevated to almost neck height for him and very wide and shallow so his whiskers don't touch the bowl. Drinks way more indoors than he used to, but nothing beats fresh puddles of course.

Yeah whiskers touching the side of a bowl can be a big thing with some cats.
I have a massive water bowl designed for probably a St Bernard, well he has CKD and drinks a lot so one that holds a good volume is essential, but he can get his face in it without his whiskers touching the sides.
I used to have a really good pyrex pie plate which was excellent for food, having a wide flat surface for the food also helps to stop them bolting their grub and vomiting as a result, but I dropped it and it broke - I found another wide dog bowl that works OK for food though. I can't find a replacement pyrex pie plate anywhere, it would be nice to have one for cooking pies on as well as for cat food :D

Yes. It is a larger dog bowl they have now. The dispenser came from the dog section as well but it was a small dog model.

although as i have said before, not all cats have read the same instructions -

conventional wisdom is that cats are sensitive to anything touching their whiskers, so water should be served in a dish that's wide enough not to touch their whiskers and put them off the idea.

many kittehs have not read the advice

We don't leave pint glasses unattended because once Jakey stuck his head in one and his noggin didn't readily slip back out afterwards, so he lifted up his head complete with pint glass with water in it still attached, and terrified himself as a result!

He's really not the sharpest knife in the drawer bless his little heart.

We have an old frying pan on our patio for a bird bath & Mitzi is a regular drinker from it.

I have an old breadmaker pan sat outside my bedroom window - the smaller birds use it regularly and it became the primary waterhole for my last two cats.

I always regretted looking into it to see just what was growing in the water..! :D

They also enjoyed a drink from the larger/flatter dish that I sat near the feeders, which also became a popular bird bath!

Very similar to this one, fwiw.

OH my god. I just went outside to investigate the sound of 2 kittens meowing really loudly and found the pair of them in the bottom of a dustbin in 2 inches of water.
I emptied them out expecting them to run away but neither of them could. They were shivering violently and still crying loudly.
I took them inside and wrapped them in tea towels.
They continued crying loudly and shivering violently so I held them against my chest while their mother licked them dry.
I've now got a fan heater pointed at them and am cradling them in my arms.
They seem to have stopped crying but are still shivering a bit.

If I hadn't quit my job on Friday and had gone to work today the poor little things would have died.

Poor babies! Where did they come from, is the mother known to you or did someone just dump them there?
The mother is Tiggy, the tabby licking them dry.
I live on a farm and my tom cat Raedwald attracted the attentions of a feral queen (Cally).
Tiggy is one of the two resulting cats from that union, Harry is the other. They are half feral as they were brought up by their mother but accept food from me. Raedwald has since been neutered but Cally and Harry have not yet due to poverty. They will be done soon.
The two drowned kittens are from a recent litter from Tiggy. I only saw them for the first time over the weekend.
They are curled up next to me with their brother from another litter Harry Jnr. He is generously sharing his body heat with them.

From the left, Raedwald, Tiggy and Harry.

It's more complicated than the Archers around here.

This is Harry with his daughters Betty and Blackberry. Betty is Jnr's sister and their mother is Cally. Blackberry is an only child whose mother is Tiggy.

This is Harry and Jnr.

Betty and Harry Jnr are the only two survivors of this litter of five, the others succumbed to cat flu.

My goodness Monte !
I’m glad you found them. But how on earth did they end up at the bottom of a dustbin?

I was very strict about no treats in the past, and I regret bringing treats into Cat’s life. I refuse to give him Dreamies cos I’m led to believe they’re the most addictive (it’s the Felix ones here) but if he had his way he’d eat treats instead of food. We manage with a mix of negotiation, manipulation, and hard refusal (on both sides).

I wish I could find the story but can’t: a fella who rigged up his cat flap to announce the arrival and departure of his cat, Elvis, on a speaker. So all day he’d be hearing “Elvis has left the building! Elvis has entered the building!”
