Your daily cat and kitten news

Cat due tomorrow morning! Frantic shopping going on. Everything is different since I last had a cat.

Should I get some Feliway?
Should I get a scratch post?
She won't be an indoor cat forever, just till she can be trusted to come back.
yes & yes ...

Our tripod has the luxury of two litter trays as well as all sorts of toys (not that she plays much by herself) including a carboard box but no cat tree as we are not convinced of her ability to climb & jump ...

Just catching up on this exciting news! Chuffed for you both! She's a beauty. She'll have a lovely life with you!

I've never had much joy with Feliway - unless she's particularly anxious, I wouldn't bother. Scratch post - if you have room, otherwise one of the flat corrugated cardboard scratch pads. We bought loads of stuff for ours, and most of it was never used or abandoned pretty quickly, with the exception of little plastic springs and feathery mice to bat about, a catnip moth, and the laser for chasing.

I'm often banging on about Pet Remedy, but it's proper good stuff ime. A lot of vets use it. It does have quite a strong valerian whiff to it for a couple of minutes but after that you can't smell anything. I use the spray but you can get plug-ins and wipes and such. That said, there are always reviews from people who say it does nothing for their pets, so maybe some are a bit immune to its calming effects. I swear by it myself, always calms Arnold when there are other cats sniffing round or loud noises going on.

I prefer Pet Remedy to Feliway as well and if one of my cats is going to the vets I wipe the inside of the carrier with it half an hour before we leave. It seems to have a similar effect as cat nip on my lot as they all start rubbing into the carrier and acting daft.

Yes to Feliway - Jocky visibly relaxes when I plug ours in before going away for the weekend, and previous cats loved it too.

Yes to scratch post, but a big one, not the skinny shit ones.

Holiday cat advice please.

Our kit kits are now around 18 months old, they've been going outside for over a year, we kept them in last year when we went away for 2 weeks, a friend feeds them. We are thinking to keep them in again as we would worry, and the girls are very attached. We also all feel bad about keeping them in.

I think we should stick with our plan and keep them in.
Do they have a cat flap? I understand the anxiety, went through it when we first left Jocky, but he's happy just mooching around on his own, robot feeder gives him dry food and he has his cat flap.
I want to show this video to everyone who says cats are all aloof and don't care about their humans.
Mine have all been like this.
Jocky is HUGELY affectionate with me. I can't bloody move without him following me tbh, and he's always jumping up on me, touching me and wanting attention.

Feliway - Depends. It certainly helped my old Whiskers settle-in comfortably but she was a very skittish/nervous/formerly abused cat. I didn't need it often once she was comfortable. You can get "travel size" Feliway that isn't so expensive and would pretty quickly tell you if it was going to be a help.

Scratcher - yes definitely! When I see how much fun and use the kittens are getting from their scratchers - Small tree with scratch posts, brushy loop with a scratcher base and a cardboard scratcher that they drag about, I realise I could have avoided a lot of damage with my previous cats. Only the brushy loop scratcher is reused from their times and I didn't get that till they were quite far-on.

:)

The cardboard scratchers are£3.00 from Home Bargains - no need to spend a great deal. The bag of catnip that came with it was dreadful but you can get better quality stuff that they love.

Quite surprised with the toys that Beauty will actually play with.
A flashy ball and a feather boa are her favourites
However, catnip does nowt for her.

e2a - she can demolish cardboard boxes, but not her scratcher - that's somewhere to sit !
most of the toys quickly get abandoned

You'll want the same food and litter as she's using at the moment to help her settle in, especially if she's on dry food switching suddenly can cause an upset stomach and that is not what you want when she's probably going to be hiding under your sofa/bed/bookcase at first!

I'm made up for you, I hope it all goes as smoothly as it can.

Have you decided on a name yet, or are you going to see what happens once she's there? A name sometimes seems really appropriate for them when you have got to know them a bit :)

Yes, I checked what they've been feeding her, the rescue are delivering her with a bag of their normal litter, I've checked her mealtimes (on demand!), they're also sending a polystyrene thing she's been sleeping in... I'm trying to keep things the same that can be the same.

I've also got some Feliway and I've followed official advice on settling a nervous cat which is to designate a safe room for her, the living room. I've blocked up the chimney, bought some pea netting so I can cat proof my bedroom window, got a litter tray free off a local Facebook group, bought bowls and started looking for a second hand cat tree.

I think it's me that needs the Feliway.

I've had a few thoughts on names but nothing definite.

Extreme violence between two of our friend's Norwegian Forest kittens... hopefully we're going to visit and see the whole litter at the end of the month 😍

I will never forget the day we first visited Sonic's breeder for the "are we on the same cat wavelength" interview and to meet the available kittens.

For the first hour, there was a giant screaming/yowling kitten tumbleweed rolling around on the floor, legs and tails popping out in all directions, as they learned how to "play nice" with one another and that biting and scratching hurts :D
Then a while Jill stood by the sitting room curtains, gently but firmly saying "No" while she plucked adventurous kittens off the curtains and returned them to the floor one after another (neither of mine that I got from her ever tried to climb the curtains while they were/are with me btw!)

So yeah I can relate to that scene of kittenhood :D

I have that scene of madly playing kittens all around me right now! - and yes, I'm saying a lot of NOs and picking-up/removing sundry kittens from the furniture/places I want them to learn not to go climbing about on.

And the cat tunnel dragger has been busy - Its right back through but for now, she's chasing her tail on the footstool beside me!

The joys..! :D
