Your daily cat and kitten news

So. I have been to meet Kerry. I had joked beforehand that she might flee on sight and that was nearly but not quite what happened.

She fled upstairs initially but then came back, so I saw her briefly. I'd brought some dreamies to make a good first impression and she ventured near enough to have a few licks then retreated under the sofa for the duration. She did consent to have a few more treats and licked my fingers. Occasionally a paw would appear to get a biscuit.

She's quite little and very pretty. Perhaps darker than her photos.

The fosterers think she would settle ok in a new home. It took 4 weeks before she came out from under the sofa at theirs but she's now quite relaxed and affectionate, particularly with the husband.

They also said she'd escaped through the bathroom window so I'd have to put some kind of barrier over the upstairs windows if I wanted them open (which seems likely in August).

But anyway I think it's a yes. I'd want to change her name as there's a human Kerry in my life, and they don't think she recognises it. I'm not sure cats do really and half the time people don't use their actual names anyway.

Incidentally, rescues are all saying the cat situation is dire at the moment. They knew there'd be an issue what with lockdown pets followed by a cost of living crisis, and this has been amplified by the abolition of the scheme where you could get cats spayed for free, either with a voucher or by a charity like Celia Hammond. Rescues are overflowing.

They said people are just not applying to adopt, even kittens.

Excellent! At least she wasn't so nervous that she disappeared to another room and didn't come out at all, which is pretty good for many adult cats.

A lot of cats know their names and answer to them (it's why Jakey is still Jakey instead of something daft and not a regular human name of my own choosing!) but if she doesn't answer to Kerry then call her whatever you like :)

dopey mog i used to live with was called bubble (after the absolutely fabulous character - previous peoples' choice) and one occasion i mentioned 'bubble wrap' and got a reaction from him.

some people will offer a kitty a choice of names and see what they answer to.

not that cats always answer, of course. they will sometimes take a message and might get back to you...

NB for people wanting indoor cats, Inner City Kitties only rehome indoors.

Re names, I had thought of Carrie, which sounds nearly the same, as there was a prominent US suffragette called Carrie Chapman Catt. But anyone I've mentioned it to has brought up the horror movie.

Inner City Kitties

a neneh cherry remake?

:p

in all honesty, i'd not heard of the suffragette, but my knowledge of horror movies is minimal so i'd not heard of that either

Being not so knowledgeable about US suffragettes, but a massive Star Wars and horror fan, my initial thought was Carrie Fisher, followed by the Stephen King book and associated movie adaptations :D

Mine was Sex and the City!

I must admit, I have spent more time than is normal musing upon what Paddy's name was in his previous life.

I don't understand how it's possible to have a cat live at floor level unless it's physically/neurologically incapable of jumping.
I mean Jakey is now nearer 18 than 17 and with weakness due to kidney disease, and anything above sofa/bed height is a bit of a struggle, but in his youth (including when he was 12) he was bombing around the top of the bookcases, albeit a bit more clumsily than the others.
I mean they mean on the floor, rather than ground floor flat by the sound of it?

Jakey doesn't play except with his own poo  but he has some "differences" I think is the best way of describing.
