Your daily cat and kitten news

poor Jakey would try to follow them and go splat on the side of the first bookcase and slide down it with all his legs scrabbling like in a cartoon

kitty who lived with my (many years ago) partner did similar once trying to get on top of the wheely bin - i think he had probably eaten a bit too much that day...

i must have some photos of that kitty somewhere - although it was before the digital photography age

I always thought I took loads of photos pre-digital - I mean I was always the annoying one carrying a camera round all the time.
When I went to Egypt I came home and had 20 rolls of film to develop.
It's nothing these days, when people regularly photograph their morning cup of coffee or their lunch.
I really quite miss having photography be my thing, these days it's everyone's thing.

Thor was that cat. He was very... special.
Jakey really is daft as a brush, he wasn't breathing when he was born and had CPR and somehow pulled through and I do think there is a bit of birth anoxia to account for his clumsiness and other slight differences.
He's not too badly affected but I do think he's suited to being an indoor cat which makes him a great fit for us.
It just makes me love him all the more though, and feel a bit protective. He has the sweetest gentlest nature.

Thor was the same. I used to have to stop him eating plastic, every day, but he was a little angel.
I don't know how he survived as long as he did... but I do miss him a lot 😢

Are you having any of them?
Sorry if you already said and I've forgotten!

Yes, I'm down for one - hopefully in about a month. :)

They were due a vet visit/check-over a few days ago and we were going to be able to go round to meet them after but Nat's mother passed away last weekend, so I wasn't going to be asking to go round till she felt more up to people. :(

Oh I'm sorry to hear that, is Nat the person who has the kittens and it was her mother who died?
I completely understand you not wanting to bother her about kitten visits right away, anyhow they have a bit of growing to do still - they really ought to stay with their mum for 12 weeks so try to put it off a bit if you can.
There's a massive difference IMO in lifelong behaviour between cats that left their mum at 8 weeks and cats that remained with her until 12 weeks - it really makes a difference.

Yes, its her cat Macey whose kittens these are.

Absolutely! - I want them to have the full time with their mother for best growth/development.
We got my Radar - well we were told he was 8 weeks old, but his eyes were still blue when we got him, so he was probably more like 6 weeks old - we didn't know any better at the time.
He was an absolute fucking nightmare (not just when he was young) - I mean I loved him dearly and I miss him so much because he did calm down a bit, but for the first year he was with us I had to wear sturdy walking boots indoors at all times because he would just go for my ankles with teeth and claws. Then when I sat down he'd sit on my chest (cat shelf) and lick my face all full of purrs.
I think a few more weeks with his mum telling him off for biting would have made the world of difference.
My other cats I got older - Sonic 13 weeks which is GCCF minimum, and Jakey was a year old having spent that year living among other well socialised cats and siring one planned litter before being neutered - and they were always much much better behaved, they understood that biting and scratching hurt and was a last resort.
To Radar, biting was a game that he had not had any adult feline guidance in a vulnerable and impressionable part of his development to tell him that it wasn't acceptable. I loved him beyond all measure but there was sometimes a measure of pain :D

I am so excited to hear about how it goes with your kitten :)

Does anyone else have a theme song for their cat and when they sing it their cat really loves it and gets excited?

Jakey was under his pillowcase (summer blankie  ) on my lap and I started singing the Pink Panther cartoon theme to him and his head went boing out from under the pillowcase halfway through the first line and by the end he had his paws on my shoulders and his face under my chin (except for the bit when it's as plain as your nose, when he raises his face for a nose boop), all full of purrs.
He absolutely loves it.

I got our dear departed Zoe when she was only seven weeks - like you, didn't know any better and her owners said she was weaned and litter-trained.

She was easily the most bonkers of all the cats I've ever owned. An unbelievably mischievous kitten who grew into an eccentric little minx.

I'll never forget the time she knocked the mantelpiece off the wall...

I was genuinely impressed / surprised when the owner of the cat charity I volunteer at told me that they don't rehome any kittens until they're 6 months old

The reasoning being that even if they give vouchers for the kitten to be "done"free at a Vet, too many times this doesn't happen with a pregnant youngster and more unwanted kittens being the result

I've heard that there's another two pregnant feral queens arriving at the already full shelter ... last count 97 cats and kittens

We had a song for our old cat Minou, but I don't know if he loved it as much as we did

Minou, Minou el gato
Todo el mundo
Saben su nombre
Ey Minou! (shake maracca)

Repeat

One of the white and ginger kittens died last night.
:'(

It didn't look well when I went to bed, couldn't stand up and looked really weak.
The others look OK but I'll give the cage a good clean and hope it wasn't anything contagious.

Got a call from the vet with Jakey's urinalysis results this morning!

Great news - no bacteria remain so he needs no further treatment for the UTI, it's completely gone :)
Protein levels in the urine down on last time which means his kidneys haven't declined any further during the illness or treatment. :) :)
We are to carry on with his daily Fortekor pill for his kidneys and the vet said quite sternly that he doesn't want to see us for the next 3 months until his next checkup is due, so that's Jakey told to stay well! :D

Such a relief :D
Hooray! So pleased for you and Jakey.

Oh I'm so sorry, that is really difficult to deal with - I wonder whether that's why the mum was taking one outside?
It's somewhat normal for not every kitten in a litter to do well and thrive (it's one of the reasons they have so many babies) but that doesn't make it any less upsetting.
It's most likely not anything infectious, but a clean with non-toxic to cats stuff won't hurt.
