Your daily cat and kitten news

Got a bit of unexpected exercise just now when Lilith brought in a live bird! It briefly escaped from her in my room and flew around, ignoring the fact I'd opened the window for it. Lilith got it again but I chased her downstairs and it escaped and flew away once outside.

Must be something in the air. Vic appeared this morning with a dead blackbird in his mouth. Normally, he makes a squeaky noise if he’s caught something but this poor bird was quite the mouthful and struck him dumb. Mrs SFM shouted at him to go outside (which he did) but, on his way past me, I burst out laughing since the way he’d stuffed the bird in his gob looked so ridiculous - very Sylvester and Tweetie Pie 😀

Lots of juvenile birds about this time of year learning what's what - and anxious parents hovering nearby - makes for easy pickings for predators, sadly!

Ibiza street cat, my kids named 'Wendy' because they were worried she didn't have a name.

We met her again in the shop, where the owner insisted she's not his, but she comes there from 9am until 8pm every day and he makes sure she is fed and watered. Wendy knows.
That's not how it works. She (the cat) might not be his (the shopowner's), but he is definitely her's (cat slave, feeder). 🤣

That's very sad - alas it happens sometimes even with the best of care, might have been something not right with it.
Poor wee mite! I hope the others are doing OK.
The rest seem great.

Yes, they had the kittens to the vet, who identified a health problem that affected her feeding and possibly indicated at more serious problems. Her boy, who took particular care of the kitten in the last few days is breaking his heart over it. :(

Oh the poor lad - that's hard no matter your age, but from the way you describe the situation it sounds like he might be quite young.
I remember discovering my guinea pig had died in the night when I went to feed her greens in the morning, I think that was my first brush with actually seeing death (rather than just hearing about it) and I bawled my eyes out for days, I think I was about 6. Mind you it hits me hard every time a pet dies, especially if it seems before its time.
I hope he's OK.

Apologies for the poor image. My forward facing camera is broken so I have to use the selfie camera which is tricky to aim.

does the panel have any thoughts about what efforts should be made to try and socialise these kittens so they are more likely to find homes as domestic rather than feral kitties?

mummy cat may be beyond that, and trap / neuter / release, or re-home as a semi-feral /outdoor cat may be the best outcome for her

i've never had to deal with a situation like this so not sure what the answer is.

would not want to do anything where mummy cat either got seriously pussed off with Monte or took their presence as enough of a threat to move the kittens to somewhere else...

and btw, squee

I've been letting Mum cat out 2 or 3 times a day. She comes back of her own accord.
While she's away I can handle the kittens.
They'll be fully socialised by the time they're old enough to go to new homes.

She still looks so kittenish, has she got a portrait in the attic that we need to know about? :D ❤️

:)

i think female cats (possibly ones that have been 'done' early) can stay quite small - Epona you probably understand the biology here, i don't

kitty next door (the one who attacks dogs) is 16, but about half the size of kitty downstairs - downstairs kitty is more of an escaped kliban cat (fairly solidly built tabby)

previous kitty next door was a fluffy tortie and was fairly tiny under the floof, and some people assumed she was a kitten (she lived to be about 18 or 19)

There is quite a marked gender dimorphism in terms of body mass in cats - I mean obviously there are outliers, like a male Singapura is going to be tiny next to a female MC - but in general the average domestic housecat, the female is about 2/3 of the size of a male. Unneutered adult males also develop really wide jowly faces over time.

the two of them don't get on well enough for me to have a photograph of the two of them together. must be a good few years now since downstairs kitty arrived, and i think i've managed to achieve simultaneous petting (with each of them at arm's length from me) once...

Havnt been on here for a while. Maybe some remember Dexter he was feral when we took him on nine years ago. All is well he still spends a lot of time indoors but likes it in the garden. He never poops in the garden he jumps over the fence and goes into the bushes in the small area of grass , trees.
but the last couple of months he’s become jumpy. He’s always charged upstairs when we have a delivery I get that but he’s become scare if I open a box, sometimes if I close a cupboard door.
I’m especially mentioning it because he was eating in the kitchen this evening I’m creeping around 🙄 and I took an elastic band off some spring onions. He was off.
As far as I’m aware he hasn’t suffered any trauma involving boxes of elastic bands. He’s comfortable in the house has a lot of cuddles , has various sleeping places variably ends up snoring, sighing and eventually sleeping on his back he even lets me scratch his belly.
It’s quite a serious question. Any of you experienced similar behaviour?
