Your 3 memorable World Cup moments in your lifetime!

1. Packie Bonner saving a penalty against Romania in 1990. He was my hero at the time so I was still jumping about by the time O'Leary hit his.
2. John Collins scoring against Brazil in 1998.
3. Germany v Argentina 2006, Lehman with his note reading and the punch up afterwards

(1) Reaching our first W/C in 90: Three draws in the group stage against England, Egypt and Holland enough to make the last 16. Beating Romania on penalties with Packie Bonner making the vital save.... and David O'Leary (not known for his spot-kick abilities) scoring the mighty decisive spot-kick.... then Knocked out by a single goal by Italy in the next round :(...

(2) Houghtons revenge goal against Italy in the first round in 94! Still one of the greatest WC goals ever...

(3) The 78 final.. Argentina v Holland.. Kempes and the explosion of 'ticker tape' at the final whistle... I was only 8

That's my 3.....

looking forward to a good one this year, even if we aren't there....

World Cup 94 was the most memorable for me.

Houghton's Goal
Packie's fumble in the second round
Escobar getting murdered :(
Jose Campos' jerseys
Hagi's lob from the touchline
Bebeto etc doing the baby celebration
Kennett Andersson and Hristo Stoichkov leading Sweden and Bulgaria to the semis.
And of course Baggio's miss in the final

1990 semi-final - I missed most of it: and ended up in some Irish bar in New York

Archie Gemmell's goal!

1982 - various moments I can't remember - German goalie, Brazil going out etc. Favourite world cup I think..

Nobody could forget those things, when Health and Safety insist on high viz vests they could go one better by giving you one of his tops!

I like the one where Maradona scored a goal and went right up to the camera and and looked completely crazed. I cant find a clip of it though. I think it was shortly before Maradona got done for Cocaine.

Blanco at world cup 98 too. That trick he did where he kinda trapped the ball between his feet then jumped inbetween two players. Everyone was trying that in summer 98 :D

I'm delighted to see he is in Mexico's world cup squad this time at the age of 37

Wasnt coke then.. was some performance enhancing drug 'ephedrine'... he strangely got randomly selected in the following game for a random drug test...

78 - Ticker tape display before the final.
90 - Pavarotti's Nessun Dorma - inspired choice of music.
06 - Being in the country that won..

N.Ireland 1 Spain 0 1982, Benjamin Massing taking out man,ball,kitchen sink the works in 1990 :D

For personal experiences my favourite WC was the USA one in '94, because I watched games in a variety of places.

- Ireland v Italy in a travellers bar in Fulham. Mental!
- Spain v Italy quarter final in a bar in San Sebastian, which caused me and my g/f to miss our coach back to Pamplona.
- Italy v Bulgaria in a bar in Brighton full of Italian language students. I was the only one there cheering for Bulgaria!

But the best was the next one in France. I got put on gardening leave from the job I was doing the week before it started, so I got to watch all the group games at home for the first 2 weeks (on full pay) while waiting for the phone to ring to tell me they had a job for me to go to! :D

Beckhams free kick vs Greece when he had missed every other one by *miles*

Plattys 'floppy arm' goal celebration vs Belgium.

I would have had Roberto Carlos' free kick vs France - the banana 35 yarder, but that was a friendly apparently.

So my third would be this

All good moments but Becks goal was in the WC qualification matches and so was the Terry Butcher incident (as far as im aware)

Im probably being a bit pedantic, still iconic moments though

1.Roy Keane fucking off in 2002
2.Robbie Keane scoring against Germany in 2002
3.The Ronaldo saga in 1998

I remember 1990 and 1994 world cups vaguely but not enough that something memorable stuck!

Archie in '78 - listerning in bed on the radio
Collins at 98 - I was ripped to the gills in the stadium and rolled down about 5 rows when he scored
Maradnonas v England - not the hand of god one

Worst
Morocco3-Scotland 0 @ wc98
Italy winning the last one
Fuckin Zidane headbutt Nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn - proabaly the best player ive ever seen in the flesh

the first thoughts i had were from the last w/c

greatest moments:

argentina goal vs serbia at the last world cup - was lucky enough to be watching live (it was an afternoon game and i had day off iirc). was straight onto the phone with a mate who was also watching. great performance that day from the argies, exhibition stuff.

zidane's pen in the world cup final. zidane vs fascist twat buffon and he chips him - crossbar and in too. would be one of the most famous moments in w/c history if it wasn't for....

worst moment:

zidane's red mist. was down for days after that, what a way to bow out. you couldn't script it. that game captured ZZ and his career perfectly.

Joe Cole lobbing the Swedish keeper from about quarter of a mile out was a good one.

e2a: Travelling home through France a couple of days after their '98 victory was quite something.

Three moments;

Dennis Bergkamp's three-touch goal against Argentina in 1998, which got Holland through to the semis.

Ronaldinho's spectacular free kick against England in 2002 which put us out of the tournament. I believe he later claimed it was a fluke.

Croatia's 3-0 slaughtering of Germany in 1998, with Klinsmann slapping the goalpost in disgust near the end. I fell in love with Croatia on the spot :)

It's got to be Italy, 1990 for me. I had my first job -- I had moved to Crawley (ha) for it. I watched the first games in a shared house full of different nationalities. Nice atmosphere. Then I fell out with the landlord, who lived in the house, and moved out very quickly and found somewhere else to live. I watched the Germany game in the new house. I had the huge house to myself as the landlord and his wife went out. They supported Luton or something and weren't interested in international football. Bizarre I thought! I remember not actually feeling sorry for Gazza as he was upset for himself rather than the team. I also remember hearing next day that there was random violence down the road in Brighton against anyone who wasn't English.

That World Cup also had the best opening credits and music. They should commission that bloke again to do the music.

Also, I associate my vague knowledge of that World Cup with avoiding getting the shit kicked out of me. A few weeks later, I had an interview for a job in Oxford. After the interview, I had a pint in the Grapes on the way back the station. I had a horrible feeling a huge bloke was looking at me in a very threatening way. I have no idea why. I was putting it down to paranoia when his little mate started talking his big mate out of kicking the shit out of me. He's not worth it, etc. He then came over to talk to me and we started to talk about the World Cup, and through the common language of football experience, I seemed to convince them not to beat me to a pulp. I got the job, and moved to Oxford, and never had any trouble in all the years I was there. Bizarre again.

Thanks Gazza.

I'd always been a club football supporter (Sunderland) but never took a bit of notice until the 1990 World Cup. I still get nostalgic for it. Best sports tournament ever.

Germany/Italy 2006 - the most passionate game I've ever watched. I was gutted for the Germans. Apparently, the Brits who were out there were rooting for the Germans too.
