World Cup 2018

This is quite sweet. Brazilian player fagner hearing the news he’s going to Russia. I guess the manager doesn’t call them first like here.

I'm assuming thats when the feed kicks in for us. When we have tourney football on, we don't have a studio with pundits or half time analysis.

Usually we just get the feed, commentary and then a collected un-commentary highlights at half time, then the second half. Thats it.

Means no crap punditry!

Harry Kane as captain :hmm:

Hopefully he won't be taking corners

Normally I wouldn't really care who is captain, but you can see our Henry Kane trying oh so hard to be captain whilst not scoring any goals. We will be shitter than the Euros and the last world cup, sadly.

Cruyff and Maradona, but they were very special and never likely to be subbed.
Hmm... both more attacking midfielders I'd say - at least not the out-and-out striker that Kane is.
Especially Cruyff. Kane rotating to MF and defence would be more total embarrassment than total football.

No other country gives a shit about who's captain but us. No one even mentions it, but for some reason the England team get tied up in some faux militiaristic trench warfare bollocks instead of concentrating on trying to kick a ball into the opposing team's net.

We should just get rid of the captain shite, but for some reason the media love it. The reason being the above.

Harry Kane will wobble under the made up pressure, and England will be shit. Again.

tickets are still available for france match in Kazan @ USD 150 or so - visa free entry and some free transport if you had an inkling to spend some summer time in Russia. you don't even have to go to the game

18 days to go. How excited are you?

I don't know if it's just because I've got other stuff going on these days, or the fact I've got more disillusioned with the top of the game as years go by, but definitely not as hotly anticipating this tournament as others. I know once it gets started I'll be into it, because I do love tournaments, but I keep forgetting it's coming, to be honest.

Similarly here, I'll be excited in the days coming up to it but not too much at the moment. Top flight football bores me these days, only watched Match of the Day about twice in the last 2 seasons. I was most excited for 2010 as England seemed decent at the time, and we didn't do terribly in the end.

At least the World Cup is still about the best country who can play football, not just who can assemble the most expensive team and players. Plus, knockout competitions are infinitely more interesting than a drawn out season that has been won 3 months before it's even up.

Hopefully we'll get some footballing minnow causing a few upsets. England might even win a game.

Thinking about having a few small wagers :) anyone got anything juicy?
Yes I've had £20 on Mbappe top scorer at 33/1. He scored twice in their last game against Russia. First WC game is against Australia so he should get at least 5 hattricks there

Not sure what other bets I'll have yet. I think Germany will win it again and am tempted to back them. Not really sure why Brazil are favourites this time

A politically correct miserabalist writes: after the deaths of the migrant workers and industrial level bribes I hope I'll be able to boycott Qatar completely. Not all that great with it being Russia as well, homophobia, corruption and the like, though (similarly) I'll get into the football when it starts. Similar points could have course be said about plenty of previous football, athletics, Olympics venues, but that's the current state of my politically correct miserablism.

Yeah, I know it gets stick but I'm a big fan of international football. Partly because I don't really have a club team any more, but also because, as you say, it's slightly more about breeding success rather than buying it (although only slightly...). Plus, as someone who plays football, those guys represent me - if it weren't for the 100,000s of players ahead of me, that might be me on the pitch! :D ;)

Yeah, I wish I could believe I'll take the moral high ground and not watch, but I bloody will. Qatar... we'll see.

England have friendlies against Nigeria on Saturday and then Costa Rica next Thursday.
Last chance for one of our key players to break a metatarsal before the big one

I got an email from the England Supporters Club offering me tickets for the Costa Rica game. I thought I might have fancied it being the last friendly before they head off to Russia and it's at Elland Road, which is far closer to me than Wembley.

But the tickets were 35 quid, or 55 quid.

For a friendly.
