Wikileaks - It's time to open the archives

Still waiting for the really top secret stuff, like the US government's involvement in blowing up the Twin Towers. I wonder when all that will get leaked.

Impossible. Any records for that will have been tightly controlled at the time and destroyed, most likely in the WTC7 (the reason it was blown up). They would never have been connected up to the internet or the rest of the military computers.

A couple of months ago a leaked letter from US Defense Secretary Robert Gates to US Senator Carl Levin, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee claimed "No US intelligence sources or practices were compromised by the posting of secret Afghan war logs by the WikiLeaks website".

The letter was leaked and published by AP (Associated Press) but it sees to have been taken down from their sites and other sites, has anyone got a copy of this letter on file?

and both were equally wrong. I thought you guys claimed some sort of moral high ground? some sort of belief in liberty, democracy, ethics, respecting the rights of other 'free' nations', no?

The above things were what the USA was fighting FOR, yes.

Not necessarily what they were fighting WITH, though.

Giles..

I had to look up WTC7... and now I know the truth!

Spoken like a man who is quite at ease with the fact that evidence which demonstrates his worldview is valid will not be forthcoming.

Any plans to learn something about the world by reading these leaks then?

'The missiles could for the first time give Iran the capacity to strike at capitals in Western Europe or at Moscow, and American officials warned that their advanced propulsion could speed Iran’s development of intercontinental ballistic missiles.'

Does that mean us? I reckon this is big news, many people are going to be quite scared tonight, these sound more powerful than Saddams Scuds and they caused panic in Israel

If they can reach Moscow from Iran (1400 miles), then they just might shave into Greece and parts of eastern Europe, but you'd need a bit more range (half as much again) to "strike at "capitals in Western Europe".

I think it'll come as a shock to Iranian people that Saudis were trying to talk their pet dog the US to bomb the fuck out of them...

Nah. The Iranians are well aware that the Saudis are quite happy to go to extreme lengths to put the boot into a majority-Shia regime, whatever the pretext, same as they've known for decades that the Saudis will always side with Sunni regimes like Saddam's.

The Royal stuff is out now, its Andrew and it involves candid talks about corruption.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2010/nov/29/wikileaks-cables-rude-prince-andrew

In the cable from the US embassy to Washington in October 2008, Gfoeller wrote: "Rude language a la British … [Andrew] turned to the general issue of promoting British economic interests abroad. He railed at British anti-corruption investigators, who had had the 'idiocy' of almost scuttling the Al-Yamama deal with Saudi Arabia."

The prince, she explained, "was referencing an investigation, subsequently closed, into alleged kickbacks a senior Saudi royal had received in exchange for the multi-year, lucrative BAE Systems contract to provide equipment and training to Saudi security forces."

The dispatch continued: "His mother's subjects seated around the table roared their approval. He then went on to 'these (expletive) journalists, especially from the National [sic] Guardian, who poke their noses everywhere' and (presumably) make it harder for British businessmen to do business. The crowd practically clapped."

"Emboldened, one businessman said that doing business here is 'like doing business in the Yukon' in the 19th century, ie only those willing to participate in local corrupt practices are able to make any money … At this point the Duke of York laughed uproariously, saying that: 'All of this sounds exactly like France.'"

Don't know why anyone thinks this is going to lead to a diplomatic crisis for America, anyone wonder why none of the "embarassed" countries are criticising America?

It's like wanking. We accuse people of wanking all the time, we have a good laugh at anyone that gets caught wanking, but at the end of the day, we know we all do it ourselves

And if the Guardian came across some NHS wanking stats they would, without a shadow of a doubt, upload them into the Data Blog and insist that they were doing so in the public interest.

Some places have different views about masturbating in public.

It's too soon to tell. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that the president's billionaire son-in-law Timur Kulibayev paid (Prince) Andrew's representatives £15m – £3m over the asking price – via offshore companies, for the prince's Surrey mansion, Sunninghill Park, which he was apparently having difficulty selling.
Nice and legal.

sack him!

...oh.

Nice and legal.

Wtf is that about eh? Something to do with the geopolitical significance of Kyrgyzstan, the sordid regime and the 'information' and sundry services they provide no doubt.

I mean, £3 million quid over the asking price??? It's probably our money as well.... :(

Pretty sure I first heard it from Paul Merton on HIGNFY some years back.

im pretty sure stephen colbert was the first several years ago when he showed a clip of a fox newsreader joking around that he didnt know how to pronounce his name and then every subsequent time colbert mentioned ahmedinejad he would come up with a more convoluted mispronunciation/malapropism one of which was ahmedinnerjacket. wouldnt surprise me if paul merton ripped him off tbh.

Just read something interesting which I've been wondering about, apparently there's another big data dump coming early in the new year but this time it's the banks which are the target, according to Assange it could 'take out a bank or two'. Wonder where wikileaks is going to take things if they keep opening up all sectors which are used to having a high level of discretion/ secrecy...?
