Who's been where then?

Went to Gabon v S.Korea football at Wembley. Capacity crowd, great atmosphere, great stadium. Terrible game of football. 0-0 and barely any shots on goal.

Got athletics tickets for the paralympics.

Anyway went to the rowing this morning. Epic session, some great races and medals really good fun.

Yet again all the volunteers were massive stars. So good natured and helpful and happy all morning, making a point of including people from all countries they spotted in the crowds. They even had the energy to have a tunnel of hi 5's when everyone was leaving.

Big shout goes out to the man from crowd management who seems to have learnt how to say 'good morning' in about 20 different languages over a loud hailer and was writing new ones on his hand as people told him them :D

We went to the football at Wembley last Sunday for Senegal vs Uruguay and Great Britain vs United Arab Emirates.

Easy journeys there and back, no queues on the way in.

Wembley was pretty poor though.
  • No alcohol allowed within sight of the pitch, but no indication of that until you tried to enter the seating area
  • Bar was closed during the second half of the first match and didn't open until 15 minutes after it finished, again with no indication until you got there, resulting in huge queues after the match had finished
  • Hotdog buns were still on the heaters from the previous day so had taken on an interesting balsa-wood like texture
  • Ran out of hot pies after the first match and it was going to be 20 minutes before more were ready.
  • No where to stand to drink or eat apart from your seats, which you couldn't go to if you'd bought beer.
  • All electronic payment systems were offline for the entire event and there are no cashpoints in the stadium. No re-entry either.
Enjoyed the matches though, and the Mexican waves kept the crowd entertained during the dull bits.

Off there again on Thursday for the Women's Football final, but with seats much higher up.

Went to watch both cycling road races in Walton. Off to Wembley tomorrow. Then Paralympic athletics.

Went to Badminton on Tuesday:

Hardly any queues at Wembley for the former, and only took 10 minutes or so to get into Excel yesterday.

The cable car over the river to Greenwich was fun too.

and to the Olympic stadium on Saturday for the athletics to see the women's long jump FINAL, men's javelin FINAL, men's 5000m FINAL, women's 800m FINAL, women's 4x400m FINAL and MEN'S 4X100M FINAL

You bastard.

That's standard/the rules for all football matches (the bit about the beer, not the hotdogs!)

In the UK, yeah, but strangely enough, this being the Olympics, not everyone at the stadium was from the UK.

There were a lot of Germans there, for instance, and there is no such restriction in the Bundesliga. Which is why I think there should have been some kind of notice or sign, rather than a Gamesmaker stationed at each entrance turning people back after they'd made their purchase.

As I said the football was good, the food and drink facilities were poor (and you couldn't take any of your own in, of course).

Fair point. Interestingly I went to watch Sheff Utd on a beam back at the end of last season and you were allowed to take the beer to your seats as technically there was no match being played in the stadium, despite having a stand full of fans!
