What's in your glass?

My local Aldi is sadly down to two resonable French reds - Corbières and Saint Chinian - before you hit the generic merlot and Pinot, so I'm treating myself to a Cairanne every few bottles ...

I love Saint Chinian, even when it's shit.

I spent a night there long before my kids were born whilst touring France and Spain in a citron AX with the back seats taken out and a two man tent in the boot, booking a hotel, every time either we or our laundry smelt stronger than the cheese we were living off.

When we arrived in St Chinian I went into the local Merchande Du Vin to grab a couple of bottles of wine to take back to the Camp municipal and I was greeted by a bloke who was a dead ringer for Antoine de Caunes from Eurotrash.

"Can I help you sir..."
" Bonsoire masseur How can you tell I'm Anglais?"
"You drove in through the exit my friend"
"I'd like a couple of bottles of red wine for el campo site si vu player"
"Sir we have 260 different bottles of red wine from 23 Château compromising of 35 vintages, is there a particular Château or vintage you would like?"

Not to be outdone by this poxy frogs leggier I played my joker card and asked for

"A bottle of St Emmilion château La Tour please..... Garçon"

Well that was it, I may as well of told him his mother was the offspring of a wild boar and a bent necked Swan.

"Sir! SHAME ON YOU! How can you ask for a Bordeaux wine in the heart of Languedoc? Do you have no shame?"

That was me told, my travelling partner is cringing whilst I'm doing a Del Boy and I'm now on the back-foot, joker card played and at his sales pitch mercy.

"Would you like to try some St Chinian wine my ignorant English friend?" he asks

That's when he started bringing bottles from all over the shop and getting his corkscrew out so I thought fuck this let's try and not spit and then just buy a single bottle 🤣

What followed was a 12 bottle tasting session of which vines grew on the side of the valley that was on clay and then when he had me a 6 bottles tasting of the side of the valley where the vines grew on gravel soil. Included in this pitch were how much rain fell in the year of the vintage and how much wine was lost when Stanley Edwards turned up and drank the village dry.

Next thing Antoine is talking about acidity, terroir and the warm mistral winds that blow on shore from the Mediterranean bringing salt in the air and a hint of rosemary and I'm I'm just necking the stuff.

After the tasting was finished Vino-trash asked me If I'd like to purchase any of the wines I had tasted so being a bit pissed and not to be outdone by his cocky Frenchness I though "Fuck it I'll stick this on on the card".

"Go ed then La, I'll have one of each"
"Excellent choice my friend, trezzo beino"

I handed him my credit card and he ran it though the old skool card thingamajig that used the duplicate paper stuff and it wasn't until he offered to bring it to the car that I realised I'd not bought 18 bottles of wine but 18 boxes

I was too pissed to even think about pulling out and more concerned about how I was going to drive to the campsite and how I was going to fit 108 bottles of wine in a Citron AX :D

It’s World Whiskey Day today - be rude not to :)

We’ve not had one yet but have a few in the cupboard. My personal fav is the Bushmills 16 but the last time we had a proper night on the W was with the Oban 14 (at a Barry Manilow night), we have both + a nice Japanese number.

Chin Chin.

I had a pint of Hophead recently. It's a light coloured ale.

It started very fruitily and the aftertaste had strong notes of ashtray

I had some Japanese whiskey with a pal of mine last time I was out in Liverpool. I was very pleasantly surprised and even more so when he told me how much he'd paid for them.

Whisky. It's a single malt. Aberlour. Not the expensive one. Well, the more expensive one. In my defence, I didn't buy it.

I love Oban whisky, Numbers. Possibly my favourite.

We have the Hibiki one, it is expensive but not the most expensive by a long shot.
It was a Nikka one. I'm not sure which one but it was £18 a dram and he bought us a double each. It had a wonderful flavour to it but hes still a soft twat spending that much on some chasers.

I've got about 60 bottles of malt boxed up in the garage, a lot of them gifts from my 50th. The only two malts I have in the house currently are a balvenie doublewood 12 which is very lovely and a Talisker distillers edition which I love but its a bit heavy for some folk.

Then there's bottles of drinking whisky of course...The MIL got me one called Woodsman which I think is M&S. I use that for the wife's hot toddies.

I will have one later and report back

Do you do B&B? Or any visiting acronym tbf.

Be there in a shot

Pinotage 'can't taste the difference but 25% off six bottles'

Something about sulfate and potheads 🤣

Red wine , just a cheapo Merlot going down a treat.

Had a half of Solstice ale then half a Ludlow Gold when coming back from camping trip earlier. Bloody love Solstice from Three Tuns Brewery.

Bath Gem.
BBF 10th Nov 2012.
Very smooth, mildly citrussy hops
And alcoholic - hic.
I reckon it would be have been good until the cap rusted through ...

After losing out massively over the hostilities, I'm doing raids on Aldi's limited French wine stocks.
They've knocked a pound off the lovely Cairanne - so I've gone upmarket from my usual Corbières and St Chinian ... perfect, mildly tannic, but rounded and just enough acidity ... dark cherry ...

Also Rasteau is a tenner - several quid off.

Interesting stuff - definite bit of licorice in it - not an everyday choice, but I'll get a bottle or two in to see if the mood strikes me at some point

I got home the other day and noticed the Rasteau had a security tag on - I'm pretty sure I set off the alarm as I left.
(Scab tills)
Today, the security guard was following me around after I put four moderately posh bottles in my basket - but then I look a bit dodge at the moment :D
