What's for tea tonight? (#8)

An M&S £20.00 valentine's meal

Coquilles St Jaques
Rump steak with peppercorn sauce, chips and peas
Chocolate & Raspberry Truffle Bakes
Chocolates
Pink cava

Plus Mr.QofG's is making some mustard ice-cream to a Heston Blumenthal recipe

I went to M&S at lunchtime and I got the same as above, but with hot choc souffles for pudding and rosti instead of chips.
We're having that tomorrow night.

Tonight I think I'll do creamy garlic mushrooms on toast

Basically boiled small new potatoes which you then fry for a few minutes with a mix of coriander, cumin, fennel, fenugreek and black onion (nigella) seeds. Very tasty :)
That does sound really nice that - nice change from bombay potatoes.

Well, tonight I am going to make that fucking gnocchi if it kills me  I have managed to put it off no less than 5 times now, on the grounds of tiredness and general can't-be-arsedness. But the tomatoes won't last forever, nor will the goats cheese so I'd best get me arse into gear.

Gonna nip tesco too in a bit and get some more of those lovely vanilla slices

The Coquille St. Jaques are lovely! Well it was all lovely really  . I didn't enjoy the dessert as much as I'd hope, I mean it was still very nice I just wasn't keen on the combination of raspberries with chocolate.

Did you have it last night? Any good? Was considering one for tomorrow night as it looks reasonable value and pretty enticing for ready made food. But if they're not that nice I'd rather cook and know it'll be a decent meal.

ETA: Ah OK, sounds alright for £20 then :)

Yup, had it yesterday. Really nice, I'd recommend it.

The starter and main course were excellent. I wasn't keen on the dessert we choose but that was my taste rather than the dessert not being good. A friend of mine, who had similar last night, didn't like the chocolates but I thought they were fine.

It's a good deal, especially with wine, and a decent meal. Tbf you could probably cook something equally as good for £20.00 but part of it is paying for the convenience of not having to cook!

It's a good deal, the wine alone would have cost 9.99 and I went for the steak so it doesn't feel too much like a ready meal.
Less time cooking = more time for romance (or falling asleep on the sofa)

Mrs cooked a perfect chicken chow mein, as good as a take away.

Ingredients
Chicken (cut in strips)
Beansprouts
Onion (1/2 medium cut in to thin strips)
Carrot (cut in to matchsticks)
mushrooms (1/2'd or sliced)
Spring onions (cut into 1cm chunks)
bell peppers (optional - cut into strips)
Fat egg noodles (pre cooked)
Light Soy sauce
Dark soy sauce
Fish sauce (Nam Pla)
Sesame oil
garlic/ginger paste
Pinch of MSG (monosodiumglutamate)

Method
Heat some oil in a wok and add 1/2 tsp of garlic & 1/2 tsp of ginger (G&G optional), cook until golden then add chicken.
Stir fry until meat is sealed / starting to turn golden and reduce heat and cook for another 2 minutes then remove.
Turn up heat again and add carrots, onion, spring onion, (optional peppers) and cook for 2 minutes, then add beansprouts and noodles and lower the heat to medium and return chicken to the wok.
After 3 minutes add a glug of fish sauce (1/4 - 1/2 tsp), glug of of sesame oil (1/4 - 1/2 tsp), 1 tbs of light soy and 1 tbs of dark soy, and cook for 2-3 minutes.
add 1/2 tsp of MSG, cook and fold the stir fry for 1 minute then serve.

If you add it to anything, does it make it taste better? It could be a welcome addition to my kitchen.

Mr Yu has gone to get us a valentines curry, I am cooking the rice here, cos we're creepy like that.

Pretty much! It's like anchovies are called "Italian MSG". They give that lovely salty flavour without it being overpowering.

Why is cooking your own rice creepy? :hmm:

Ta, maybe I'll give some a go. Do you use it much? Does it have a noticeably salty taste?

I dunno why cooking rice for take away is creepy, it's just a lot of anal effort for something which is very cheap to just buy along with your curry. But brown rice is nicer that white imo.

I don't have any at home but years ago when I did kitchen work it was a staple. It's just like salt, as in it brings out the flavours of other ingredients, but I cannot really explain it.

I do like brown rice but only use it when I make Jamaican style chicken and it all goes into the pot. Takes bloody ages to cook :)

Don't know - got one of the dine in options but might just have one course of that with something else.

dunno i have loads of eggs that need using, but i had ommlette last night and boiled egg for breakfast today, so think i may need a bit of an egg break :D

I'm having to do something quick and simple tonight. Housemate is having her boyfriend over for a valentines dinner. I'll be hiding in my room playing on my xbox

Mr Yu has been gone for nearly 2 hours, not long now I hope.

:D

I love hearing about Mr Yu's takeaway expeditions

Tonight was meant to be a romantic dinner for two, but the bloke is at home in bed with a stomach bug :(

I'll probably have soup and maybe he'll be up for a piece of dry toast by tonight (I might make it for him and cut it into a heart shape)
