What's for tea tonight? (#8)

I'm doing a veggie paella. It's been a while since I attempted one. I used to be able to cook a really good paella, but when it comes to doing a veggie one I struggle a bit.
In the end I cooked a veggie one using up stuff I happen to have such as courgettes, roasted peppers, and used half a bottle of manzanilla, and my really nice olive oil, and then cooked a smaller pan of chicken and chorizo paella to mix in to the veggie one for me and Rich, who are not veggie. Both of my victims said it was really nice and asked for seconds. So I guess I can still cook a decent paella.

You lot are really making me miss my mums cooking. She makes amazing moong dal with peanuts in It. Moong dal with rice is one of my favourite comfort foods.

Aww. Mum's cooking can be the best. Actually I felt bad for mine as my Dad's an awkward bugger and I was dead fussy as a kid, so suspect she gave up. Remember when I started doing roasts for her when I went home and the look of horror on her face when I was putting a bit of beef in the oven for less then an hour. :D

What's your Mum's heritage if you don't mind me asking?

Was at street festival so had footlong hotdog with cumberland sausage, arancini with tomato and mozzerela, chips with basil, and hand rolled ice cream (berry flavour with marshmallows, gummie bears and caramel sauce. It was lush!)

Here is a pic of what it looks like

My mum was born in Uganda. Her grandparents moved there from Gujarat in the early 1900s! They were Muslims rather than Hindus. So our cooking is very special and is a mix of Indian, Arabic and East African food. We eat things like cassava and matoki which isn't that common in Indian recipies. What about your family?

Nothing so exotic on the food front! My Dad was born in the North East and remembers the end of rationing! My Mum in Kenya from a mostly Scottish family who had lived in Africa for several generations and moved to the UK when she was 14. Meat and veg was mostly my upbringing.

My mum remembered being at school after the war when their teacher brought in a banana for them all to try for the first time!

Also - I get asparagus wee and yeah, you don't have to get in close to smell it :D it's always like 'Eurgh, wtf? Aaaaah yeah... '. Iirc though, it's one of those things you either react to or you don't.

Sat - we had ham/salad cream/avocado sandwiches, crisps and mini Kitkats.
Sun - a chicken and veg stir fry with courgetti and strawberries and meringues with plain yoghurt.
Today - pissaladiere with baby plum tomatoes then caramel sponge pudding with squirty cream. Also got a mango that needs eating so the kids can have some of that, too (I'm not keen on mangoes).

Interestingly not everyone suffers from Asparagus wee smell (I don't :( ). No one is entirely sure why but it may be down to a genetic mutation:

Anyway, Saturday night was pizza delivery (shared a Margherita and a Gorgonzola and Walnut one ).
Sunday - Chicken breast steaks and chips
Tonight - pulled pork rolls and coleslaw

It's not been a healthy couple of days  :D
