Because from the Bering Strait to the Florida Keys everyone knows in their heart that Biden is a dud candidate. The kind of candidate that makes Democratic voters stay away from the polls in their droves. A past-it establishment politician who is only on the ballot due to backroom deals in Washington. An uninspiring man with a cupboard full of skeletons.
Currently all his shortcomings are overshadowed by the human disaster area in the Oval Office (or more likely cheating again on the golf course). But it won't take much to remind people what a vote repellant Biden is, so the hope is he just shuts up and let's Trump lose the election rather than speak up and keep another bunch of voters at home on the day.

Actually, I think Biden has come across quite well in this campaign; he sounds reasonable, dignified, caring and mature, which that alone puts him a street ahead of Trump

As opposed to more Trump or Biden. Call me stupid but, at this point, I would just enjoy the chaos. Certainly got nothing to either aspire or look forward apart from a certain cynical nihilism.

Best analogy I've heard is the "bed of nails" - Trump has survived dozens of scandals that would have sunk a normal candidate/president because he moves on from saying or doing one outrageous thing after another with dizzying speed, he's moved on to another thing almost before people have time to be outraged by the previous thing, every time something looks like it might have consequences he'll come out with some stupefyingly bad position on another issue and divert the media's attention that way.
But Biden doesn't seem all that vulnerable - he's survived 50 years or so in public life despite being renowned as a gaffe machine, and nothing seems to be doing him that much damage - in May, he basically said black people who don't vote for him are Uncle Toms, and it barely caused a ripple.

He's a terrible candidate, an absolute failure from the old school Democrats to get behind but... there's still goodwill from his time as VP.

The Republicans don't seem to be targeting him that well, tbf - "He's sleepy, ancient, and he has no idea what's going on! Also, he is a radical Communist who is hell-bent on abolishing the police and letting anarchists wreak havoc in our cities!"
They seem to have settled on "He's so sleepy and distracted he'll let radical socialists hijack him to abolish the police and bring in a Stalinist regime," but it doesn't seem to be an especially effective line of attack.
