What stupid shit has Trump done today?

Trump now targeting legal immigrants

US President Donald Trump's administration is to make it more difficult for poorer legal migrants to extend their visas or gain permanent resident status (a green card).

The rule targets migrants who rely on public benefits, such as food aid or public housing, for more than a year.

Their applications will be rejected if the government decides they are likely to rely on public assistance in future.

What with this and Priti Patel's recent comments, it feels like some governments are becoming more blatant about putting the wealthy over the poor.

Israel blocks Omar, Tlaib from entering country amid pressure from Trump

Israeli officials have decided to block U.S. Reps. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., and Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., from entering the country as part of a planned visit, a reversal that comes amid pressure from President Trump and concerns about their support for boycotts of Israel.

The move prompted a massive outcry from Democratic lawmakers in Washington, but the Israeli government staunchly defended the decision -- suggesting the lawmakers had ulterior motives with the planned trip.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, explaining the decision at length on his office's Twitter account, said that Tlaib and Omar's itinerary "revealed that they planned a visit whose sole objective is to strengthen the boycott against us and deny Israel's legitimacy."

Netanyahu said their travel plans referred to a trip to "Palestine," not Israel, and the congresswomen were not interested in meeting with Israeli officials. He went on to note that the Palestinian organization that planned the visit, MIFTAH, supports the boycott movement, and that people associated with the group have supported terror against Israel in the past.

Trump accuses 'fake news media' of trying to hurt the economy

President Trump on Thursday accused the press of trying to "crash the economy," seeking to deflect blame amid signs of a global economic downturn.

"The Fake News Media is doing everything they can to crash the economy because they think that will be bad for me and my re-election," Trump tweeted a day after U.S. stocks suffered their biggest drop of the year. "The problem they have is that the economy is way too strong and we will soon be winning big on Trade, and everyone knows that, including China!"

The remarks also came a day after Trump said the Federal Reserve was to blame for holding back the economy.

The president regularly decries coverage he dislikes as "fake news," using the media as a foil to rile up his base. He has previously blamed the press for causing tensions in the country in the wake of violence, and as recently as Tuesday suggested he would coast to reelection if he benefited from a "fair press."

Trump's tweet on Thursday escalated that narrative, suggesting that the press was attempting to influence the economy to weaken his prospects at winning a second term in office.

Ilhan Omar hasn’t been arrested 23 times

A recent Facebook post adds criminal and daughter of a terrorist to the list of baseless accusations that have been made about U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn.

The photo, published Aug. 1 by a conservative Facebook page called Tactical Hospitality, makes a variety of claims about Omar, some of which are related to previous fact-checks about her family history and comments about al-Qaida.

Two claims were new to us: The post said Omar has been "arrested 23 times" and is the "daughter of (a) Somali terrorist."

"From jail cell, to Congress," claims the photo, which includes images of Omar’s purported mugshot and another of her being sworn in as a congresswoman.

The post was flagged as part of Facebook’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed.

Appeals court rules Trump admin must provide hygiene products in migrant facilities

A federal appeals court on Thursday upheld a previous court order mandating that the Trump administration must provide basic personal hygiene items to children in detention at facilities in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas.

The ruling by the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Fransisco hands a loss to the Trump administration, which had challenged a lower court decision two years ago ordering U.S. officials to provide basic personal hygiene items as well as adequate sleeping conditions, temperatures and food and water to children in detention at facilities in the Rio Grande Valley.

The appeals court's ruling essentially backs the two-decade old Flores agreement, which mandates key aspects of how immigrant children can be held by authorities, including that they be kept under the “least restrictive conditions” possible.

“Assuring that children eat enough edible food, drink clean water, are housed in hygienic facilities with sanitary bathrooms, have soap and toothpaste, and are not sleep-deprived are without doubt essential to the children’s safety,” the appeals court panel ruled.

Justice Department attorney Sarah Fabian made headlines in June when she argued before the panel that the Flores agreement did not specify that the government was required to provide soap or oral hygiene products.

I came here to post that. Thankfully the Danish foreign minister has told him to fuck off (more diplomatically than that, obviously). I love Greenland's multicoloured houses, makes you think it must be such a happy place. Why can't we be more like that…? Every single house along this road is either pebble-dashed, brick or white. Wales seems to be 'going Scandinavian', just think it would make the country seem much less depressing,

(I've probably used up my off-topic post quota now, haven't I…?).

Greenland has the highest suicide rate in the world.

I agree with the sentiment though. Modern housing estates in particular are so beige. I'd love to see some new takes on Brutilisim though too!

Sounds like a classic Trump distraction technique. What else is making the news that he wants hidden?
I suggest you are doing it wrong. US administration doesn't just sit around waiting for the President to micro manage what it is doing...You would do better looking for what story isn't making the news. To that I say, fair play and about time

Trump wants to bring back mental institutions to address mass shootings

President Trump says he wants to reopen mental institutions as a way to address mass shootings, an idea he pushed twice Thursday and has floated before.

The president's insistence that mental illness is the cause of mass shootings has disconcerted mental health professionals who insist that most people with mental illness are nonviolent. These experts also say people afflicted with mental illness are more likely to be the victims of violent crime than the perpetrator, and fear the president's language only further stigmatizes those struggling with mental health issues.

"I do want people to remember the words 'mental illness,'" the president told reporters on his way to a rally in New Hampshire Thursday afternoon, responding to a question about gun control.
