What stupid shit has Trump done today?

smells like watergate

Sen. Chuck Schumer’s office says the Senate Democratic Leader was the target of an attempted smear campaign in which someone forged a sexual harassment claim against him and shopped phony court documents to major media outlets.

...

A review of the document by ABC News found several unusual formatting and stylistic features. Numbering along the side of the page is not found on Washington, D.C. legal documents, for example. Also, the alleged plaintiff represented herself without a lawyer -- called "pro se" in legal terminology -- but yet the document used language heavy in legalese.

A source close to Schumer also questioned several of the dates associated with the alleged inappropriate behavior in the document. In one case, the claim alleges Schumer was in Washington when in fact he was in New York City on that date; in another instance, it lists an incident that took place in Washington when the senator was in France, the source said.

What has the DP done to fight voter suppression then? Because whatever it is, the Republicans are still pushing through with their voter disenfranchisement activities, and after their defeat in Alabama they're going to step them up even further.

Interesting thing on what was different on the ground in Alabama compared to last year:

Well yes, I'd have though it obvious that the GOP would continue to push for voter suppression. Remember, it is the state legislatures that pass such measures, several of which have been overturned by the courts. But, as Trump rushes through more judicial appointments of his yes men, that will be less of a back stop. You've also got to remember the squillions Republicans pumped into the mid term elections in 2010 precisely so they could take over more statehouses, redraw districts following the census and pass measures to keep people of colour from voting.

Democrats will only have a chance to overturn these measures if they gain majorities in more districts. Even where it's close, like in the US Congress, Republican legislators now just change the rules so they retain pretty well absolute power.

But, it's not just legal steps Republicans will take to stop Black and brown folks voting. Not updating antiquated and faulty voting machines in districts with POC majorities, reducing the number and hours of polling stations in Black majority neighbourhoods, text and email campaigns targeting Black and brown folks with the wrong details for voting, "accidentally" dropping certain people off the voter rolls, etc. None of these require a law on voter suppression if there are "local people" prepared to make it happen.

There were members of the Democratic Party all over Alabama who were fighting voter suppression by helping people get to the polls, tweeting information on rights to people who'd been blocked from voting, countering misinformation being circulated to dissuade Black voters from turning out, etc. Basically, all the stuff that Tweet thread said. And, it was Black Democrats that made it work.

Can you tell me what else you expect members of the Democratic Party to do to fight voter supression? Ta.

they outspent the republicans 10:1 -cant do that on large scale
They didn't do it in 2016, though. And any attempt to replicate on a national scale, without the threat of a paedophile candidate to address, will have to address the bread-and-butter issues Sanders emphasized. Can the clique of oligarchs in control of the DP do that? Could they do it, even if they wanted to?

Ah, but they don't have to do it on a large scale!

Jones' win yesterday will bring the balance in the US Senate down to 51 Republican vs 49 Democrats (including the 2 Independents who vote with them.) Likewise, if they can flip governorships and statehouses in key areas, they can break the GOP stranglehold. Then they have a chance of axing measures that were set up to give the GOP perpetual control and the oppressive platforms of legislation they push.

What's this bullshit about oligarchs in control of the Democratic Party? Who made the win in Alabama, and Virginia before it happen? Oligarchs my hairy ass.

So long as Sanders keeps talking about "ordinary people" and "bread and butter issues" that exclude the people of colour who are at the heart of the Democratic Party (as per yesterday - how soon we forget!), he'll get absolutely fucking nowhere.

Makes lifetime federal judicial appointments basically up to Senators Collins and Murkowkski, both of whom are firmly pro-choice, I think?

Well, Collins and Murkowski both backed the clusterfuck that was the GOP Tax Bill the other week, so . . . but yes, even flipping the one seat will make Team Trump's plans a bit less of a cake walk. We just need a couple Senators to peg it (Come on McCain, it's the least you can do!) followed by a hard drive to get a Democrat in . . .

But Carter’s victory is a testament to his own campaign and the work of outside groups, including the D.C. chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, which caught the rising Democratic wave that swept even unlikely candidates into office on Tuesday.

the existence of DSM cause quite an issue for your race based politics tbf. Which is why you only mention them briefly and in the same breath as evil sanders people, if at all

"My race based politics?" Like I'm making this loyalty to race over class thing up all on my own to spite you and your red rose emoji brethren? Christ man, just listen to yourself for a minute. Did you see how the vote in Alabama was absolutely divided along race lines and what that says?

Although Lee Carter is affiliated with the Democratic Socialists, he ran on the Democratic ticket in Virginia. He benefited from Democratic party raised campaign funds and the votes of people who tick the box to vote a straight Democratic Ticket.

Of the 100 seats in the Virginia House of Delegates, precisely one is held by a Democratic Socialist, but you are trying to credit Socialists for overturning the GOP majority in the statehouse? C'mon, pull the other one! Jesus, there are 4 Libertarians and 5 Green party members of the house, so even they have more clout than the Democratic Socialists do.

In recent weeks, it was looking like white supremacist, homophobic, misogynist, "alleged" child molester Roy Moore was likely to become the next US Senator from Alabama. He would have helped solidify GOP control of the Senate and been a keen cheerleader for extreme and oppressive policies. Democrats there knew what was at stake, that they had a massive GOP majority to overturn, that voter suppression would work against the Black voters who are the core of the party there and that every single vote mattered.

Sanders didn't even mention the election on his Twitter feed. He didn't hold a rally that might have clenched crucial votes. He didn't even mention this crucial vote was happening in the rally he did find time to hold in Akron, Ohio. In his speech there, he only went as far as saying there was "an element" among Trump supporters who were racists, homophobes, etc. but then undermined even this faint concession by saying, "I think that the vast majority of Trump supporters are people who are in pain, who are struggling economically, who are worried to death that their kids are going to be in even worse shape economically than they are, and they turned to Trump because Trump said things that made sense."

Yup, like all those "economically anxious" voters in Alabama yesterday, who voted for Moore in about the same proportion they did for Trump in 2016.

Funny though how the Black and Brown folks, much more likely to be struggling economically and worried to death about their kids not just economically but y'know, that the chances of their kids getting slaughtered by the cops or deported under a White Supremacist president and congress, might just increase. Neither they nor even the poorest of the white folks thought "Trump said things that made sense."

Not content though just to ignore the Alabama special election, some of the "Our Revolution" folks took to social media to say they couldn't back Doug Jones because he hadn't shown enough enthusiasm for single payer or other Sanders designated priorities, and now they seem decidedly downcast that Jones actually managed to pull it off.

If only those silly Black and brown folks would stop harping on with their identity politics! It's just a matter of time until all those "heart of gold" blue collar folks will embrace the rising tide of socialism and we'll all live happily ever after!

No politics here just a slew of second hand Twitter grievances.

you're amazing I say you have race based politics, you scream its not so and then prove it. BTW- 'brethren'. There are female socialists you know. And POC. I realise for someone who only noticed politics when the bad man won the election that history and indeed modernity are proving difficult to parse but these things are true.

Clearly, it needed Roy Moore to win and things to get a lot worse.
oh you're a fan of immiseration? really? bit off if you ask me.

That timetable appears to have been somewhat accelerated:

...numerous reports from inside the ever-leaky 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. had the now-ex director of communications for the Public Liaison office going out in a hail of profanities as Chief of Staff John Kelly told her to pack her things.

She then tried to storm into the president’s residence to appeal the decision to the commander-in-chief, according to a report.

“Gen Kelly Kicked her out [with] high drama with [Omarosa] offering vulgarities and curse words as she was escorted out of the building and off campus,” April Ryan, White House bureau chief for American Urban Radio Networks, tweeted Wednesday.

Ryan, who is also a CNN contributor, said in her radio report that Manigault Newman, 43, “was very upset and said that she wanted to speak to the president.

“Gen. Kelly said that the president was already informed and signed off,” she said, citing sources. “Gen. Kelly is also alleged to have said that this is not like going to the principal’s office.”

During the altercation, Manigault Newman told Kelly that she had brought the black vote to Trump, Ryan said, but he snapped: “No, that is not the case!”

After unleashing a stream of vulgarities, the spurned aide tried to walk over to Trump’s residence — but was stopped and physically removed her from the premises, Ryan added.

A White House official said she was “physically dragged” out, according to the Wall Street Journal [...]

I wonder if she'll spill any beans? Trump's famous for non-disclosure agreements isn't he and I don't know what the national security rules are over there. If she's very unhappy though she might have a story to tell/sell.
