What stupid shit has Trump done today?

That's got to be a crime, surely?

I am sure it must be. For starters, where did they get a list of names and contact numbers for registered Democrats? They clearly weren't just going through the phone book at random. Before the 2016 election, there were paid for posts on social media, targeted to the neighbourhoods and by demographic data to reach African American voters, telling them they could vote by text. Not quite the same as a phone call to a specific person, but still.

Probably not relevant to most here who aren't eligible to vote in the US, but at least there is this now :)

Absolutely.

A male colleague posted a negative remark with offensive language about Black Lives Matter on social media using an account with his own name, job title and employer, but still has his job.

She fessed up to being the mystery cyclist to her boss and although there was nothing to connect her or her employers to the incident, she was summarily dismissed - for violating their social media policy. WTF.
The woman’s name is Juli Briskman. Her employer, government contractor Akima LLC...

Kinda funny really as that's exactly what the DNC and it's supporters have resorted to over Brazile's revelations, smears and obfuscation.

Funny how the identity thing doesn't work the other way around. CRI doesn't see fit to bow to the lived experience of a woman of colour who she disagrees with. Not that I am suggesting that she should. However, we all know that would be, and in fact was, the exact narrative were the shoe on the other foot.

Fucking hell - it was an observation - that women and men and women of colour are often criticised for the same behaviours (e.g. being angry) that white men get a free pass for.

Maybe you haven't noticed this being a thing. Fine. It doesn't mean my comment was about you.

This is shite, you didn't suddenly decide to post that non sequiter unrelated to the post you quoted

At least own your insult if you're not going to hold your hands up (and you should apologise), now you look like a prat to all involved either way.

Ah, evidently it's not that accurate, but this boring one is! Polling Place Locator - VOTE.org - Everything you need to vote

"America’s warriors are prepared to defend our nation using the full range of our unmatched capabilities... every once in a while, in the past, they underestimated us. It was not pleasant for them, was it? It was not pleasant.”

And he said this in Japan.

So, there's an important election today in Virginia. And this is happening.

View attachment 119873

Well, despite this and all the dire predictions, the Democratic Party did really well in Virginia! Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General and a majority in the House of Delegates. Grass roots party activists worked their socks off to get out the vote and it paid off.

Election Results: Virginia

But exit polls showed that the wins were down to people of colour, particularly the one in five voters who are African American.

More than two thirds of white men and more than half of white women backed the GOP gubernatorial candidate Gillespie with his platform of restricting Medicaid and abortion access, no restriction on guns, privatising state schools, trashing the environment and an overtly racist campaign against 'gang violence.'

There were only slight differences in voting by income levels and with college educated voters somewhat more likely to vote for the Democrat Northam.

However, 76% of white, non college educated men voted for Gillespie. Only 8% of Black women did.

Full exit poll results here.

This probably made a big difference in VA. 200,000 voters back on the register after a Virginia Supreme Court decision last year. Should happen everywhere where this sinister voter suppression measure is in place.

I saw something this morning saying that young people (I didn't see a racial break down within those numbers at all) had overwhelmingly gone for the Democratic guy.

I believe he's travelling to China today to meet his New Best Friend, President Xi, whose country, as we all remember so well, he labelled a currency manipulator on his first day in office.

Not exactly a Trump thing but question about the First Lady. Why in America does the spouse of the president (so far always a woman) join them to so many political events? It does seem even more so with The Trumps.

Meet the better halves of the other presidents/kings/queens/Prime ministers etc and go shopping of course.

She has (and I assume Michelle Obama and previous FLOTUSs did) done some appearances. I think I saw her visiting a school in Japan, for example. I hate to be stereotypical, but I suspect they are things that are set up around things that are seen as "women's issues", typically children and education from what I've observed recently.

That's one of the reasons why a Clinton presidency would have been interesting, the first First Man! What would Bill do? Take him to a local sports team, or show him some diggers? Perhaps he could go for a beer with someone... Would we get a nice new international take on what a "man's issue" is?

Yes, that's true. It's further down in the article I linked.

Turnover was really high in most areas, too.

In addition to fighting voter supersession efforts, the best chance of booting the GOP is to build on the Democratic Party's existing base and get everyone possible registered and voting!

Lack of another suitable thread leads me to leave this here. I suppose it could be put down to blowback anyway. If it results with a few people blowing a fuse on the right of the political spectrum, all the better.

Transgender woman just defeated the man behind the notorious 'bathroom bill'
That was fantastic news!

In a similar vein:

A New Jersey politician who shared a meme on Facebook during January's Women's March in Washington asking whether the protest would be "over in time for them to cook dinner" is eating his words.

A woman who was angered by Republican John Carman's remarks on Tuesday defeated his bid for a second term as an Atlantic County freeholder.

A Liberian refugee was elected to a mayorality (is that the right term?) too!

There's a nice list going round of some other similar victories. . .

But now we have loads of people posting banal, childish and nasty posts complaining about someone who posts banal and childish posts (mainly on twitter) and says nasty things about those who attack him.

It's a classic case of the pot calling the kettle black.

Since the dawn of IRC there have been banal and childish posts about politicians. It's nothing new.

that's funny, I read something that suggested the exact opposite - the black vote was down on 2013, but the liberal white vote was well up (enough to compensate). I'll see if I can find the article.

Well, Democratic Socialist Lee Carter benefitted from a six figure total in contributions from Democratic Party groups, and phone banking by Dem volunteers, which he acknowledged himself. (But other commentators seem to be leaving this out.) So he had quite a hand from Democrats, centre left and otherwise.

Danica Roem ran as a Democrat with party backing across the spectrum, too, so no idea why she's included in this meme.

If you want to further support Danica, you could buy some of her music!

Yep, not only did a trans woman win, a trans woman metal vocalist won!?!?! (It's not a genre that's particularly to my taste, but the first track isn't too bad to my ears.)

Trump Tightens Cuba Embargo, Restricting Access to Hotels and Businesses

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration on Wednesday tightened the economic embargo on Cuba, restricting Americans from access to hotels, stores and other businesses tied to the Cuban military.

A lengthy list of rules, which President Trump promised in June to punish the communist government in Havana, came just as Mr. Trump was visiting leaders of the communist government in Beijing and pushing business deals there. Wednesday’s announcement was part of the administration’s gradual unwinding of parts of the Obama administration’s détente with the Cuban government.

Americans wishing to visit Cuba will once again have to go through authorized tour operators, and tour guides will have to accompany the groups — making such trips more expensive.

People who already have booked and paid for a trip on their own will be allowed to go, and transactions with businesses on the barred list can be completed, the administration said. The new rules, which go into effect Thursday, apply only to future travel and commerce. Eighty-three hotels are on the banned list.

On the less happy side there's another one of those Trump-fan-explainers:

Johnstown Never Believed Trump Would Help. They Still Love Him Anyway.

That plays up the cult angle on some of his base. I don't doubt that the reporting is valid. I do wonder how uniquely Trumpist this is though? I saw a political consultant Tweet (a loooooooong time ago) that the GOP base of people who would vote for them really almost no matter what is probably around 28%. I imagine there's a similar figure for Democrats/Greens etc....

Politics is tribal, to greater and lesser degrees I'm sure, for a lot of us. (I identify very strongly with the British Labour party, to not vote for them - as I have on occasion - has an emotional impact.)

Trump's identified and very strongly played to a base - he's doing it on Twitter at the moment with his "deplorables" schtick.

Gah, another feature about blue collar white Trump supporters keeping the faith in the face of the adversity they voted to worsen, but blaming Black folks/Muslims/Gays/Mexicans/Hilary Clinton/Obama for everything bad in their world. They even did one of these about the town where I was born. Surely would be more interesting to hear from people who didn't back him, and are suffering. Not enough of those.

Particularly in rural working class areas, most people will vote the party they were born into, and the majority seem to be Republican. I think last year though, there was an extra level of enthusiasm for Trump among those excited with a candidate who not only shared their beliefs on race, gender, sexual orientation, guns, etc., but spoke about it openly. They adore him for this still, and that wouldn't change even if he did shoot the mythical guy on 5th Avenue.

He got on well with his local dems but not the State Democratic organisation.

How a Socialist Beat One of Virginia’s Most Powerful Republicans

“My literature and all my paid communications are just about what I want to do when I go down to Richmond. In fact, my mail consultant had to add the word ‘Democrat’ to my walk cards at the last minute before he sent them to the printer.”

Seems he ran as open socialist, was unapologetic about his socialism, and talked about the issues.

Seems like the openly socialist did very well Yesterday Was a Good Day
